It's too bad he has someone promoting him on the boards to that extent. The kid may not even know it. I'll wager it's Dad.
[SCIAC Inside Joke]No, it's the father of a girl whose friend is a cheerleader at UD.[SCIAC Inside Joke]

He should have chosen the name of a rap singer as his handle. ::)

I don't know if Miles Hookstead is the best freshman in the IIAC or not.  I don't even know if he is the best freshman player at Dubuque.   What I do know is that he's a good player who, barring the unforeseen, will develop into a very good receiver now that he has decent coaching, something that he seriously lacked in high school.

He's not a bad basketball player either and he is capable of playing at the DIII level.  But I suspect his best college level sport will be football.

Speed, I'm just curious.  How do you determine that high school D2 basketball  "is all that he could hack" when the only reason he played in D2 is because his school's enrollment placed them there.  Have you ever seen him play?

If you'd look to my post the "hack" reference was to his lackluster reception stats on the football field against weak teams.  Maybe the coaching was bad, but even bad coaches know how to get a "star" the ball.  I know his school's enrollment placed him there.  In basketball, he averaged something like 19 points and 9 rebs his senior year.  That's solid, but he's a big guy (currently 6'5" 250lbs according to UD's roster, and similar in hs) and it was easy for him to throw his weight around against the teams he played against.  You have good players at that level, but usually don't run into guys that.  He wasn't routinely playing against guys like Nankivil, Butch, Landry, and the like (not the same time frame I know, but you get the idea).  If he were, I suspect it would be a different story.  He was a solid hs athlete in his ranks, but I don't forsee All-American awards and numerous other accolades being thrown his way at UD.

Dubuque Telegraph-Herald sees both UD and Loras losing this weekend.

The TH jumping off the Loras bandwagon  :o  I'm stunned.

Interesting schedule for Loras.  6 of their next 7 games are played in the city of Dubuque!!!

Oh man...we just uncovered a massive two-sport DIII star....Miles Hookstead might play basketball (one of the top 50 players in DIII hoops) too according to "Mr. H" from the Wissports.net board and the kid can actually dunk!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjRRJZmxKw4  Watch out!  There is a kid that can dunk in DIII!!!!!

Everybody...GET OFF THE TRACKS WHEN THIS KID COMES THROUGH THE LANE/ENDZONE!!!!!!

After watching this allegedly "sick" dunk, I'm reminded of a movie. See if you all can guees what it is.

Its down between Big and Hairy (1998) the riveting blockbuster about a boy who convinces Sasquatch to join his struggling basketball team, and the soon to be released White Men Can Kinda Jump (2010) a film about a guy who dunks in a game in an effort to prove his critics wrong.  I'm torn.

Team of the week.

DL Frank Weymiller, Fr., Coe
Weymiller recorded 12 tackles in his first collegiate game, five solo. He also had two quarterback hurries in a 9-7 win against Augustana

Way to go Frank!

Best freshmen in the IIAC in week 1!

Congrats to Don Bladt for making the Team of the Week as well. Cornell is gonna need him all year.

A pickup like Weymiller really eases the pain of losing Hadenfeldt and Wilkins. You gotta love it when alums have skilled siblings.

My bad, Speed.  I see the hack reference was in response to football and not basketball.  I would still wonder how you would come to the conclusion that D2 was all he could hack when the only reason he's playing there is because of enrollment and having never seen him play.  I've seen him play many times.  I've seen quite a few D1 teams play as well and I have little doubt that he could have played in several of the D1 programs I've seen.  However that doesn't necessarily make him the best freshman in IIAC and I'd agree with anyone who said it was premature to start that talk.

Hookstead's high school coaching was, simply put, atrocious.  Zweifel knows how to use him though this year you're likely to see the significant majority of pass attempts headed Michael Zweifel's way.  Who incidently could only hack D2 as well.  ;)

What starts a Rivalry?

Being new to this conference, I haven't heard of any rivalries. I thought you may be interested in a good story on how a rivalry started here in Arizona. It is at the high school level, but is pretty bizarre.
My sons' high school, Brophy Broncos (Red), will be playing against the St. Mary Knights (Green) tomorrow. It is one of the oldest rivalries here in Arizona.
Brophy was established in 1928. They started there football team at that time and there uniforms were green. (Brophy Green). They ran into financial trouble and had to stop their football program. They then offered to help St. Marys, who wanted to start a football program, by giving them the Bronco's uniforms. Brophy then come out of their financial difficulties and asked St. Marys if they may have their original uniforms back. St. Marys responded with a big, NO. The rivalry began.
Every year, thousands come out for the rivalry game. It's held at a college stadium and if you're not there early, forget about a seat. Thought you might find it more interesting than just two teams in the same conference.

Speaking of IIAC two-sport stars, does anyone remember former Simpson TE and basketball star Jesse Harris?  Apparently he's been named Gov. Culver's deputy campaign manager for the Big Lug's re-elect bid.  Link:  http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20090909/NEWS09/909090352/1007/NEWS05

He played basketball at Simpson, but not football.

Rivalries in the IIAC...

Dubuque/Loras...located 6 blocks from one another, Loras changed their name to Dubuque College almost 100 years ago despite UD going by Dubuque College at that time.  Loras then held onto important mail that was supposed to go to UD and they missed out on some government contracts because of this.  The Iowa Supreme court eventually heard the case of the two schools.  Bad blood became so strong between the Catholic school in a very catholic town and the Presbyterian UD that when the IIAC went to a divisional lineup in the early 1950's that Loras was put in the North Division and UD in the South and the two schools didn't play each other in football.

Luther/Wartburg...two Lutheran schools with a long history of pranks between them.  Their boosters could better tell just what makes them rivals.

Coe/Cornell...oldest college football rivalry West of the Mississippi, located about 15 miles from each other.

I had friends from high school that went to Billie Penn and they told me there was a big rivalry between them and the Central University of Iowa...but nobody I knew that went to Central seemed to think there was a rivalry...so who knows!!!

I googled those rivalries.

very interesting!

Cornell Rams at Coe Kohawks
"You probably need half a dozen officials,'' said Coe football coach D.J. Leroy with a laugh, "to keep those games under control."

This will be the 109th meeting between the two teams, though the records dispute whether Coe leads the series 55-49-4 or 54-50-4. Both teams claim to have won the 1902 game, in which the officials failed to properly keep track of time.

I always enjoyed a good rivalry! ;D
