Is it just me, or does all of this talking about where Central is ranked sound not very Dutchlike?
It's definitely you....the aberration is when the Dutch are not ranked. ;D

It doesn't mean anything if the Dutch lose during conference play and another team runs the IIAC table.  I'd rather be playing Wartburg in Sept. rather than in Nov...........Willis will have that defense clicking before too long.  Too much history to assume otherwise....

I'm not talking about the Dutch being ranked, they should. I meant all the talk about where they should be ranked. I've never heard Dutch supporters concerned with that before, it was always said that it wasn't important. Just unusual to me.

While your offer is tempting I think I'll pass.  I remember a September Saturday before you came on the IIAC scene.

September 15, 2001:
Cornell      26
Wartburg  13

This was an upset of such epic proportions, that only the events of four days earlier kept it from being headlines in newspapers around the world.

I was a freshman when we won this game. I'm not sure the upset was as big as you're making it out to be (I also recognize your sarcasm). Yes, Wartburg was favored to win that game but the better team won that game.
Which just goes to show that on any given day, the team that plays the best can beat the odds.  I hope Central plays better against the rams this year than they did last year.  At the same time, maybe that wake up call helped inspire the win for Central on Saturday.  I'm sure that as guys were working out over the off-season, the Cornell close call was good incentive.

Is it just me, or does this criticism of discussion about where Central is ranked sound like a little Wartburg jealousy?

Obviously we would love to be 2-0 and still ranked. We aren't and we aren't. Just commenting on the talk of wether Cenrtal is ranked high enough just doesn't sound like the Dutch posters of the past years.

I thought we were the same old posters.  Anyway, I didn't notice any talk of rankings until Central beat #7.  And then it was just an intellectual exercise.

The whole game had a funeral-like feel to it
after the events of 9/11. We definitely weren't ready to play and Lovely ran all over us. That was the best Cornell season/team since they joined the IIAC.

I didn't go to that game, but was handling the in-studio duties for the Knights Radio Network at that point.  Matthias and Nelson sounded pretty down as the game was going on, which says something, especially about Matthias.

I was also nursing the first hangover of my college career that day, having spent the previous evening partying in Cedar Falls with a couple of my cousins.  The Knights football team only lost 10 more games the rest of the time I was in school, but needless to say I had a few more hangovers than that.

Wartburg doesn't quite have the DL playmakers of the past. Lots of inexperienced guys there right now and the Knights are having to blitz to get pressure on the QB. Hopefully that can get rectified over the next couple weeks.
Yordi seemed to be on the other night. Had several drops by his receivers.
I really like how the Knights are playing to their strengths offensively-
2 of the most athletic-looking TE's (as a whole) that I've seen in a KNights uniform has lead to a lot of Double tight sets and a massive OL along with a stable of very talented RB's means who has time for the spread when you can line up and shove the ball down people's throats.
Yordi made some good throws, but I like how he is *just* dangerous enough with his feet that it needs to be respected. A couple times with guys very close, he threw too hard, but that's something that is easily fixed.

FBdaddy, I agree with you....I remember the good 'ole days when rankings didn't matter....back when getting it done was enough. That was back in the day when the team had a quiet confidence about themselves. It seems like we are quick to toot our own horn these days, and that concerns me a bit.

For the record, the ranking is a nice compliment, but it's only an uphill battle from here. I have a feeling the conference is going to provide more than a few surprises this year.

In D3 football you just need to win your conference and the playoffs will take care of rankings.  I wouldn't want to have a big bulls eye on my back with a high ranking right now.

In D1 where your ranking will help determine what bowl you go to as well as if you make national tv during the season...and therefore help next years recruiting...then rankings matter a lot more.  For D3, it's more of a conversation starter than anything important really.

I do agree with footballdaddy and dutchie that in the past there was a confidence with Central that kind of made rankings unimportant to them and they just went into each weeks game with the objective to win and didn't care about rankings.

Though, it does give us something to talk about on here, which is fun.

Speaking of talking points.  Dubuque is the LEAST penalized team in the conference right now!!!

I don't know wether to go to church or buy a Powerball ticket. Dutchie and I agree on something! ;D

Rankings are a good indication of where you were after the last game. Not much of an indicator of where you will be next week, let alone two months from now.
