Central down 20 with about 12mins to go in 4th quarter against Coe in 2004. The Dutch score 21 unanswered points and win 21-20...not really a miracle but a great game none the less.

Just a point of clarification that game was 2002.  2004 Coe won the game 16-13.  That was my first year to follow the Dutch.  I looked it up on the IIAC web site.

The crowd goes WILD!!!

This is the game I was going to mention.  I went to Wartburg for my "official visit" the following weekend and the campus was still buzzing over that game.

Another one from before I got to Wartburg would be the 1999 Homecoming game against Luther when Dr. Bo Harris knocked down a pass on 4th down for Luther in the closing seconds to secure a Wartburg win.

But without a doubt, the strangest ending to a game I've ever seen in person, came in Minneapolis on the night of Sept. 11, 2004.  Wartburg was in town to face Augsburg (the first game in the series that has now seen six installments, most of them incredibly contentious), on the opening night for Augsburg's new football facility.  The place had new bleachers, lights, FieldTurf, the works...except not enough room for two sidelines, so the two teams shared what I'm going to call the "far" sideline.

Its a back-and-forth game, with neither team opening up a lead larger than three points until early in the fourth quarter, when an Auggie FG made it 24-17 in favor of the home team.  Back come the Knights, driving 73 yards in just over three minutes and using an Andy Parker TD plunge to tie it up at 24.  After the two teams trade punts for most of the 4th, Augsburg picks off Wartburg QB Reed Hoskins and drives to the Knight 36 with 19 seconds left.  The 53 yard field goal attempt is no good and the Knights take over.  After WR Mike Hachey pulls in receptions of 19 and 26 yards, Wartburg sends the field goal unit out for a 34 yard attempt, but it is blocked with three seconds left on the clock.  Jubilation in the Augsburg stands.

But wait - there's a penalty flag down.  Wartburg freshman wideout Kyle Duchman was stranded along the "near" sideline at the end of the 2nd completion to Hachey and couldn't get back across the field, meaning that Wartburg was flagged for illegal participation and the blocked FG never happened.  After a five yard penalty, kicker Jordan Maus stepped up and drilled a 39 yarder as time expired.

ya, I knew it wasn't in 2004 because I had moved back to Iowa by then.  Didn't have the time to look it up.  I figured Charlie would set us straight eventually.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Possibility of going to the Wartburg-Cornell game on Saturday. Heys, if you send me some Carne Asada, I'll try to see that at least 1/3 of it gets to .jr. ;D

Nice try...Jr. will smell it on you and confiscate by force if necessary.  Reference how bears get food out of coolers left in locked cars at Yosemite to further the analogy.   :D

One that should come to mind to you doolittle.  The 3 OT game in Dubuque with a kick that was tipped and found its way over the goal line.
Will be in Mt. Vernon the next week for the UD/Cornell game though.

Me too...see you there!   :)

2007 at Northwestern

Northwestern scores late in the game, with the PAT will tie the game and send to OT.

Northwestern lines up for the tying PAT....and....the sprinklers come on!

After a significant delay and the Northwestern kicker sufficiently iced down, Cornell blocks the PAT attempt and preserves the win 31-30.

I remember October 15, 1983 at Memorial Stadium, Champaign, Illinois with the Fighting Illini against the #6 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.  It was one of those times when I lucked out and my father-in-law managed to finagle me a ticket to the game on the 49-yard line, 33 rows up.  It was one of those perfect, sunny-and-crisp midwestern Fall days

OSU scored with about 87 seconds left in the game, took a 13-10 lead, and kicked off into the endzone. Illinois then covered the 80 yards to the end-zone in the next 84 seconds, making the PAT and defeating the Buckeyes 17-13.  It was bedlam at Memorial Stadium and when I listened to the OSU announcers later that evening on the replay, they were speechless at the end of the game.

A few weeks later, Illinois beat then #8 Michigan and went on to become the only team in Big Ten history to beat all other Big Ten teams in one season (there were only 10 teams then).   That day against Ohio State I will never forget.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Am new to the board.  An old time Knight - when I played we were small but slow!  The Knights are so much better now than back then.  Anyway, the reason for my post is to say it looks like there is a lot of parity in the IIAC this fall.  Big win by the Dutch last weekend.  Hope the Knights can get it all put together before we play them.  I live in Houston and watched the Knights beat Augsburg on the internet - almost like being at Walston Hoover - it was great!  Won $10 from a church friend who went to Auggie!  Really enjoy reading DIII Football and am a proud Knight supporter.  Will be at Homecoming to see a former teammate, Brian Albert, be inducted into the WC Athletic Hall of Fame.  Great honor he richly deserves.

DMW:  Welcome aboard.  Here is your first positive karma.  Have a good time at homecoming.  It sounds like it should be a great event this year.

Love the stories of the amazing games.  I recall a game in the Chuck Long era at Iowa I believe.  Mich #1 vs Iowa #2 at Michigan and the Hawks get a FG at the end to win 9-7.  I was in CLeats and Spikes with the beer goggles on but do remember having a great time cheering at the TV and enjoying even more drinks in celebration.  I recall a heck of defensive battle, big places by the D in low scoring games don't get enough highlight time.  Maybe some Hawk fans can fill or correct in some details.

DMWartburg,
Welcome aboard. I am new here also. Not only on the board, but to the league. You may want to take the $10 that you won and put it in the church basket. The Football Gods may look at that favorable when looking down at your Knights or contribute into The Warthog Fund for the pre-game festivities at Little Warthogs. I'm sure he would look at that favorable! ;D :o ::)

The 9-7 Hawkeye win @ Michigan was in 1981.  Michigan was ranked #7 at the time and was the 3rd 7th ranked team Iowa had beaten that year, after wins against Nebraska and UCLA earlier in the season.  I have no idea where Iowa was ranked that day.  Iowa sealed the win with a late INT in the endzone.

In 1985 it was #1 vs. #2 in Iowa City.  Iowa beat Michigan 12-10 that day on a last second Rob Houghtlon FG.  I am sure Bo Shembeckler was hoping to ban FG kickers after those two games ;)  My family had tickets to that game.  I however, was in Sumner for Jazz Band contest.  I was able to get back to our house in time to see some of the 4th quarter.  A friend and I ran outside and took 2 or 3 laps around the house yelling and high fiving.  Stupid band geeks and their jazz band contests...I could have been at a great game  ::)  My family still says that was the best game they ever saw in person.

I have no big moments from my playing career because I sucked worse than the teams I played on, But the kid had a great finish in his high school career. He was QB of the #10 team in the state playing the #3 team, which also happend to be our biggest rival. After a back and forth game we got the ball on the 40 after they kicked off out of bounds after scoring the go ahead TD with :50 left in the game. A 40 yard out to the opposite side on the field, a 15 yard out to the near side along with a roughing the QB penalty got the ball inside the 10. After a blown up screen pass lost 5, an off-tackle running play scored the winning TD with :21 left.  A kickoff and two incompletes later we won. One of my proudest moments as a parent.

I want to find the stats and story for that game. IIRC, this all went down with 6 or 8 minutes left in the game.
To top it off, Dr. Tyler Molstre was also named homecoming king the night before. That game continued a very long home win streak and also a IIAC win streak.
