[I'd also like to see a Central vs Drake match up.

That would never happen. The powers that be and the Des Moines media would never want their beloved Drake to lose to a "lesser" school.
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

Its frustrating seeing all the coverage in the DM Register about Drake when (IMO) there is a better team just down the road.

Someone on the D2 board mentioned they thought Cornell could be a sleeper pick to go D2 and join the NSIC.  The conference Upper Iowa left the IIAC to go to.

He didn't have anything to back the claim up.  Anybody else hear anything about teams moving around between conferences or divisions???
Are you trolling on D2 message boards?

I give the D2 board a look see every so often.  Along with a Hawkeye one.  I won't look at the NAIA board.  Those guys are beyond delusional.

Going to d2 is definitely all about the notion that being able to give scholarships will help in recruiting (bringing more kids on campus) as others have already said.

And, interestingly, a lot of it seems to be geared towards the parents (dads) at that level.  It amazes me how many Dads brag about how "my boy is on a football scholarship" even though it's for a trivial amount and it's at a school that many Iowa Conference schools would wipe the field with.

Don't get me wrong, there are many very good d2 programs and a lot of athletes for which that is a terrific option...but for those who go just because of the "prestige" of getting a scholarship, that seems like a poor decision.

Cornell to D2...?  How could anybody even entertain the thought?

I don't see why the school would turn its back on the oldest rivalry West of the Mississippi with the Ko-hacks.

It would also imply an emphasis on athletic that would create a "Jock Culture" with athletic scholarships, when school's priorities don't presently map to this sort of thinking.  They see athletics as part of the overall academic landscape, not a means to its own ends.

Across all sports Cornell is making positive progress in terms of competitiveness...the plan seems to be workig.  Going D2 changes the approach.  We most likely will never be a Wartburg in across the board team success.  But we are improving and that's the goal.  D2 doesn't accelerate...it most likely pulls us back a few steps.

Travel costs and program costs are higher in D2...in the current economy, this makes no sense to undertake.

Regarding Drake and the non-scholarship D-1AA schools.

I think it's a sham.  This division is a sham created to allow these schools to compete at the Division 1 scholarship level in every sport but football.  Many of these teams couldn't beat the schools in the D3 top 25.  I can't even figure out what attracts a kid to one of these schoold to play football there unless its our local Pioneer League affiliate University of San Diego (for the weather).  And screw the Ivy League and their "principles"...they go to the NCAA's playoffs in Basketball.

USD is the only Pioneer League team in the area and has to travel all over the country to play in its "league".

They get beat, even when they are at their high point, by low-level, legitimate D1-AA (FCS) schools and D1 FBS have no use to play them.

They usually won't play D3 teams unless they can get a guaranteed win against a patsy for fear of being exposed.

DM Register story on staph infections @ Simpson
http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20090922/SPORTS0208/909230341

"Simpson College is taking extra sanitary precautions after five members of its football team contracted staph infections.

Simpson athletic director John Sirianni said that the first case came up earlier this month, and the other four surfaced within a week or 10 days."

Cornell to D2....nonsense.  If anything they will be in a new conference with Grinnell, St. Olaf, Carlton, Luther, Beloit, Lawrence and some of the other philosophy and music schools sometime in the future.

The only really interesting teams in the IIAC this year are Cornell and Dubuque.  Central and Wartburg are "Same old, Same old"  and everyone else is an also ran except the above two.

The interesting teams are Cornell....will they win a game in the IIAC?  Dubuque....just how improved can they be in one year?  That can keep you on the edge of your stadium seat.

Everything else is just...........fluff.

I wouldn't say Central plays many fluff games, they are always too close for comfort, like at Cornell last year?!?!?   FB games are never "fluff" unless its a truly outmatched patsy playing a DI for the paycheck.  To charge full price for some of these games almost seems like fraud.   Umm . . . . Iowa vs Arkansas St. anyone?

Well...we'll learn something more relatively about Wartburg and Central as Cornell and Dubuque square off this weekend.

Both Wartburg and Central kept their opponents out of the end zone last week at critical times on goal line stands to keep the underdogs at bay.

After putting 500 yards up on Central and with the passing of Hansen and Zweifel on the receiving end...along with a productive ground game...it's likely UD is a more formidable offensive foe than the Kaniggets.  The quesion is...is the UD defense as resilient as Wartburg's.

The Rams and Spartans both battle to avoid going 1-3 overall and 0-2 in conference.

UD has a senior QB, the Rams start a freshman...who happens to be the IIAC total offense leader at this point.

Is Hansen healthy?  Can Burdick bounce back from a 3 INT performance?

I can't speak to Hansen's injury, but I know Burdick is a tough kid...so I think he'll bounce back well.

I'm glad I'll be there to watch.   :)
