Dutchfan1 was correct.  Coe was better than I thought they would be.  Boyle at QB is capable but seemed out of sinc at times.  #1 son pointed out that he was throwing behind his receivers a lot.  There were no turnovers but there were a lot of dropped balls.  The passes were not all that bad and the receivers had both hands on the ball so IMHO some of those drops were not the QB's fault.  There were some bad balls by the Coe QB.  Coe is a young team so some mistakes are to be expected.  That being said Central is a very young team.  There were only 4 starting seniors on the offensive side of the ball today.  As these young players get more PT they will improve.  As Coach MC always says they need to improve each week.

Beautiful day for football in Dubuque at Loras.   Rick Willis seemed upset by the mistakes (2 fumbles and 2 interceptions for example), but the Knights dominated.  Yordi was impressive:  31-42-1 for 304 yards.  Once again, the offense racked up some big numbers (408 yards) and the defense continues to improve, holding Loras to 155 yards.

It was my first visit to the Rock Bowl.  Very nice venue, good-sized Homecoming crowd including lots of Wartburgers.  Only negative was a really annoying hawk screech that accompanied first downs/scores by the Duhawks.  It sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard.  So, when you go to Loras, don't sit in front of the press box!

Had a great time in Mt. Vernon today, Purple Heys was a great host and the parents tailgate were nice to let a blue clad couple hang out there before and after the game.

Cornell was up 13-0 before I knew what the heck happened.  Dubuque got a quick strike TD and then Cornell drove down the field only to fumble into the endzone from the 1.  Dubuque drove the field and went up 14-13 going into the half time break.  That was a big time momentum change right there.  Dubuque seemed to make some good adjustments on both sides of the ball during the break.  Offense and defense seemed much improved in the 2nd half.  Cornell played hard and looked good at times.  They didn't seem to make any adjustments during the course of the game.

I think Dubuque will continue to put points up on the board throughout this year.  The question will be whether the Spartan defense will be able to step it up a notch or two as the season progresses.  Looking forward to going to Dubuque for homecoming in two weeks time.

Doolittle,

I think UD will put points on the board against all the teams in IIAC.  The question will be can they stop them?  Do you agree?

Yes I do.  Dubuque, offensively seems to do a good job of taking what the defense gives them.  If you load up the box they can throw on you all day long.  If you defend the deep ball they can dink the ball short.  If you dare them to throw deep they can burn you that way as well.  Spaulding is a tough little back and he can get loads of yards.  Dubuque can run the ball if you try to take away the pass.  The Spartan defense seemed to get pushed around by the Cornell offense during the 1st quarter and about half of the second quarter.  They didn't seem very big.  As the game wore on Dubuque seemed to step it up on the defensive side.  Not sure what to make of that.  They made some adjustments and Cornell didn't seem to figure that out.  I think other IIAC teams will be able to score against UD.  It will be up to the UD offense to put more points on the board than their UD defense gives up.  That's not to say I don't think the UD defense doesn't have potential...I think they need some more seasoning and time together.  The Spartan offense and punting game are strong, the defense and kicking game are a work in progress.

DutchFan2004

To me that's UD's story the last several years.  They score and put points on the board but then can't stop teams when they need to.  The last few years UD has been very talented on the offensive side of the ball.  Under Coach Z that hasn't changed at all.

We're you talking about Coe and Central here?  Coe only had three starters on offense that are seniors.  One of them was making his first start of the year after suffering a broken hand in camp.

Central only has 4 starters, and not many more on defense, young tough team.

Coe's team bus getting stuck outside the stadium was a perfect metaphor for their performance on the field today. They just couldn't get anything going on either side of the ball. Central had a lot to do with that. While I firmly believe the Kohawks can beat any team in the conference on any given Saturday, they were no match for the Dutch today. There are still games to be won in the coming weeks. Hats off to Central and their fans. Fall Saturdays in Pella are among my favorite football atmospheres.

And how 'bout them Hawkeyes!

Not gonna be able to afford that many mistakes come November or against a top tier team in the conference.

I haven't seen an offense (Hawkeyes) give the ball back in a long time. They let their defense take care of business at the end. That was a very focused team in the fourth quarter.

Missed all three games this week end. High school game went into over time Friday. We won by one. Driving me crazy that I missed the game(s) and when some one tells me about the details.

Does anyone know if the Dutch game can be watch at a later time?

Thought for the day:

I make my practices real hard because if a player is a quitter, I want him to quit in practice, not in a game.

College football transfers....How do coaches feel about them?

"The new rule (proposal 2005-54) states: A student-athlete who earns an undergraduate degree in four years but still has one year of eligibility remaining can transfer into another college's graduate school and finish his or her playing career there immediately without having to sit out a year."

I have a son graduating this year and he will have one more year of eligibility. His existing coach, (How would I describe?), is like talking to an opposite of Coach McMartin.

What keeps on entering my mind is a situation of a player/friend who was playing for the UofA. His dream was to play for Texas A&M (Texas native). He asked for permission to talk to Texas A&M. The very next day he was not allowed to work out in the weight room. He was told that the weight room was for team players.

What are your thoughts/experience with transfers?

[I have a busy work day and will not be able to check back till later. I would appreciate any input on this subject. I'm trying to put two days of work into one. I have to open the weekend for the football games! ;D]

From what I know Central's staff has welcomed transfers with open arms.  I know three that made all conference.  There are some kids that try to walk on at Iowa and Iowa State find out that they won't or can't make the 2 deeps and transfer to play football.  I am sure that Central's door is always open for players.  Also I know that Simpson's QB is a transfer from Iowa State so I am sure that Simpson would take them.  I also think that Wartburg has a couple of Iowa transfers on the team.  The evil empire takes all kinds of transfers and even gets them roofing jobs.  (come on guys that was a joke) ;D ;D ;D ;D  We haven't ground that axe much in awhile.    ;D ;D ;D ;D

I would have to believe that any team would welcome a transfer with open arms. I'm speaking about on the other side of the spectrum.

Hypothetically....
What would Central do if their starting junior quarterback asked permission to talk to Wartburg? Of coarse they would wonder why, but what if that player had his mind set on transfering out. How would the Central coaching staff react to that? Would they continue to play him?

A great way to handle it would be to take care of the transfer on the off season. That wouldn't be possible. My question to everyone is...

Do you know of any one that has been in this situation. (Both sides. Player or the college their leaving) or
What are your open thoughts on the situation?

I think the situation would be completely different if he is a starter or if he is on the bench.  Nobody wants to see their starter talking to other schools.  If the kid isn't getting playing time then he and the coach need to sit down and talk things out.  I would imagine that wouldn't hurt the player.
