Only need one more win for the season to be an improvement! I think now that everyone knows the conference championship and playoffs are out of the question, we can play football and have some fun.

I second that... ;D

One thing I have to ask is has any one ever seen a -7 yard kickoff other than jr high or high school?  Simpson had two onside kicks one that went about 5-6 yards and the second one was -7 yards.

This may have only been -6 yards, but it happened in the DIII National semi-final last Dec 13 in Belton, Texas. UMHB was kicking off to start the second half with an extremely strong wind in their face. The wind was blowing at such a clip that Alan Munoz, the Cru's kicker had his kickoff completely stop in mid air and sent towards their goal. Whitewater's kick return unit was backing up & probably a bit stunned to react quickly enough and being closer, by the time the Mary Hardin kickoff team racing down the field turned around, located the ball and downed it, Munoz was credited with a -6 yard kickoff...and not an onside kick attempt either.  First time I had ever seen a negative yardage kick on a regular kickoff in any level.

Play by play - page down to Play by play, third quarter kickoff.  There is probably video of the play somewhere because it got quite a bit of dicussion on this web site.  When the airborne ball first bounced, it was near the 40 yard line but was ruled by the game officials not to have traveled the required 10 yards to be UMHB's ball, though the ball had clearly past the plane of the 40 on the fly.  Whitewater took over, scored in 1 play on their way to a 39-13 win.

I just felt a lack of intensity especially for a homecoming game AND loras game. Maybe it was the cold, maybe it was the lingering effects of the coe smashing last week, maybe it was the penalties (some of which were BS in my opinion that were momentum changers), maybe the poor special teams play and turnovers. Not sure. But, there is a lack of veteran leadership on the team right now. Half the starters are freshman. I know this is a broken record but "if those guys stick it out for 4 years", they could be something special. Bright side of the game was I liked the more aggressive defensive play and the youngsters looked good at the end. Wyatt Hanus looked great at QB and so did the back up RB. I know they were going against loras's 2nd teamers also but they moved the ball well and scored twice in a short amount of time.

Well said Willie U, lack of intensity tonight...for a homecoming and Loras game that is curious.  The refs did seem happy to throw holding flags on poor #72 and then let the Loras o-line do some holding...but, with our lack of intensity no amount of good calls would have reversed the outcome tonight.  I also liked the UD punt that hit a Loras player and bounced into UD hands.  The ref waited until you could see UD breaking free for the TD to blow the whistle and say it didn't touch a Loras player so the ball was downed at the 45.

With only 24 returning players I suppose it must be hard to have veteran leadership.  It just looked like a team going through the motions tonight.  They were a 2-3 team that still had a lot to play for this season and it looked like they could care less.  Very very puzzling.  We have both been broken records on this, this team does have talent.  Hopefully they can stick around and develop some leadership to get some wins...we shall see.  Hanus at QB looks like a stud.  I'm kind of suprised he went D3.  He looks like a very good QB prospect.

I love your last paragraph.  Hits it right on the head.

Just lost an order of magnitude of respect for the Z's.

His kid is in there in the 4th Quarter of a 43-0 game collects 5 of his 10 catches plus a TD.  Padding his kid's stats in scrub time with the 2nd team is bad form.   :(

His kid doesn't need the numbers that badly for everyone to know how good he is...

Then again, I figure I'd have my QB throw to Jr. 25 to 30 times game if I were his coach... :D

Purple Heys,
If that rocked your boat with Z and his son, check this out......

"It is a state record that has raised the issue of sportsmanship.
With his football team soundly ahead of Chinle in the final quarter Sept. 18, Show Low football coach Randy Ricedorff sent his son, junior quarterback Rathen Ricedorff, back out on the field to throw his record ninth touchdown pass in the 67-0 rout."

The announcers were polite enough to purposely not mention his name.

I have to say it was a tough one listening to the game today!
Meaning, I was washing the cars in my shorts working up a sweat while listening!

I don't believe in luck either.  I believe Simpson is entirely capable of winning Saturday especially if Central is distracted thinking about Wartburg or the play-offs and isn't focused 100% on beating the Storm...badly.

Just be prepared to get it back in spades if Central stubs its toe. I'm not saying they will, but this league is too competitive to give anyone extra ammunition.

Oh, my.  Someone stubbed a toe this weekend.   :o :o :o  Have to admit I didn't see that coming.

I have a relative at Ashford that is convinced all the kids that currently go to IIAC schools will now flock to Ashford because they are implementing a program where if you have a 3.1 GPA you will get free tuition to Ashford.  He was telling me this last weekend but then other family members showed up and the conversation changed before I could ask him anything more about it.

I have my doubts that kids will suddenly start flocking to Ashford...and Clinton ;D  any time soon though!!!
I doubt if Ashford would stay in business very long either.  Then again, that might be par for the course with that school.  Don't they change names once or twice a decade?

I don't think Simpson is going to be trying the onside kick any more this season.   ::)  Tell me what was really the point when you are down 30+ points in the 4th quarter against a team that could easily bring the starters back in any time if things went south?

Well, I guess there was an opportunity to embarass your own kicker and his parents.   ;)

Storm Chaser

Congratulations to Central - I find myself in a very difficult position, rooting for the Dutch to run the table and go deep into the playoffs to ease the sting of yesterdays debacle.  You can't give a good team 4 turnovers, short field (fumble and 2 afore mentioned onside kicks) and stay close.   Reality is Simpson lost 4-5 key defensive performers from last year and has yet to find their replacements going from the best run defense in the conference in 2008 to worst in 2009.   Hopefully Storm can right the ship and win out and salvage a winning season.

Thought for the day:

Some people try to find things in this game that don't exist but football is only two things - blocking and tackling.

BoBo,
Awesome video clip! I always liked a running back that makes the holes and doesn't just look for the holes. This could be used as a training clip for running backs.
But, I am very curious to know if #3 got flagged for illegal block to the back on #37?, maybe even a personal foul? Seeing that it happened after the play. Looks like the ref is ready to throw?
This clip looks like a....How To and What Not To all in one video.

Great win Dutch!!! Seems like the stats and score are misleading...Simpsons first team was still in scoring on Centrals 2nd and 3rd string guys late in the game. Central was outgained but they had a short field a lot too it sounds like (onside kicks and turnovers).

Great game for the Dutch, lets keep rolling into next week!
