I have question for the board.

Before the UD game last saturday, the PA announcer asked us to stand for the National Anthem and then asked the gentlemen to remove their hats.

Is it proper etiquette for everyone to remove their hats?  Or just the men?  I had always thought everyone should remove their hats.  But that announcement made me question that.  I suppose the announcer just figures men are more forgetful!!!

...Bladt Bowl II.

Maybe the Bladt parents had their sons go to different schools because if they had played together they might have resembled these guys...

It's proper for anyone (man, woman or child) to remove their hats during the anthem. The reminder seems to always be directed at you forgetful boys, though (for good reason, some might say.)  ;)

I think DF1 is correct it is proper for men and women to remove their hats but I think it is etiquette for men to do it and optional for women.  Women with covered heads goes way back.  Men take their hats off for a show of respect.

Greetings everyone! I know it has been forever since I have posted but believe me I have been following this years IIAC action closely as well as the Spartans.....Going back to POY and the COY talk, Zachary the RB from Central has been pretty solid this year, and the QB from COE has been pretty good as well....You can help but nominate the coaches from Central and Coe for COY.....As for the spartans, despite their record I think they have a few solid players on their squad....Hansen for sure has done some great things, Z jr has shown everyone that he still can be a break through reciever and spaulding as well...but the low key players that I have noticed were the spartans OT Matt Fort, he does a pretty good job with his blocking and rarely misses a block, and then for the defense id say the lonesome senior Grant has done a decent job along with Burton the safety and Ingham the corner. Its not always about making plays but the three guys on defense that I mentioned have had some sort of impact, and with Grant being the lonesome senior he has his hands full keeping that freshman defense in tact so i applaud him I know it is not easy being the only senior.

Word on the ground in Waverly is that I should be relieved I missed last Saturday's implosion by the Knights.  It was described to me as being the worst display of football by a Wartburg team in over twelve years.   :-[

I would guess there has been a rude awakening for some folks over the past few days.  These guys better realize they don't win just because they put on a black/orange uniform nor do they win because of the success of the teams that came before them.  If they win it will be because they out hustle, they out work and they out think their opponents.   >:(

Yesterday's home runs don't win today's games.

I read with interest the article doolittledog had discovered about Iowa Wesleyan and a possible move to NCAA D3.  Living down here in SE Iowa, it would be great if we could get them back in the IIAC.  It would be a nice short trip for us to take in some IIAC contests.

I wonder how serious the discussions of moving to NCAA are in Mt. Pleasant.  If they decide that is what they would like to do, what are the possiblities that the IIAC would take them back?

The problem with a ten team league is that inability to schedule more than one non-conference game.  Perhaps D3 football should go with an eleven game schedule.

Regarding National Anthem etiquette ...

I "Googled" it and found in the first 5 entries I read that men are expected to remove their hats ... no mention of women re: hats.  There also is the expectation that men and women (except those in uniform) will place the right hand over their heart.

Those in uniform, not just military but also law enforcement, EMTs, etc., are expected to render a military salute.

Military veterans not in uniform may render the military salute if they so choose.

As a side note ... after our son's time in the Army and especially in Operation Iraqi Freedom ... I have a far different feeling about the National Anthem when it is played than I did before he served.  And I don't mind all the different vocal versions, though I prefer bands (symphony orchestras are even better).  And I will always like Jimi Hendrix's electric guitar version.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Let's put it this way, the highlights of the day was hearing Simon Estes sing the National Anthem and the fedora the president had.

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

Exactly.  Proper for all, but etiquette only requires men to remove the hats.  I think it goes back to olden days when women would put on dress hats, many of which were pinned on, so not easy to remove.  Also, any women from cultures that cover their heads would not be required to uncover.

Central players went through that same realization last year and look what the off-season brought about so far this year.  We weren't able to change the way last year went because it took too long to wake up to reality, but reality bites when you think about it for 9 months.  The only way to fix it is to make sure it doesn't happen again.

It would be nice to have IWC back in D3, although I think they still have a little work left to do before they are at the same level as the rest of the league.  In the past few years they have made more of an effort to recruit players from Iowa.  I do think their staff is moving in the right direction, however time will tell.

It would raise the interest in D3 football in SE Iowa...so that would be a good thing for the area.

I still don't think Central was that bad last year.  The couple of games I saw, it looked like they had a couple of let downs that cost them big but otherwise it looked to me like the teams that beat them played extra-ordinarily well.  And one of those teams was Luther, which has me worrying more than most of you pickem pickers seem to be.  I still remember how disturbed I was by the fact that Luther's quarterback was just a freshman last year when he had such a good game against the Dutch.  What has become of him?  I expected to be hearing a lot more about him this year.
