I am not bagging on our CB's...they're freshman.  On the whole I think they're doing pretty dang good.

They have the unfortunate position where when they make a mistake or a bad read or whatever, that it's exposed where all can see.

Keep battling boys, we need ya.   :)

DBQ beat Simpson 36-33

Zweifel's kid gets 330 yards receiving!

20 receptions, 330 yards, 3 touchdowns

OMG, that is one incredible day.    I take it that IIAC people would consider this win an upset of sorts?

I'm not an 'IIAC people', but both Simpson and UD have been so up-and-down this year, I'm not sure 'upset' has any meaning when they come together. ;)

Not sure Simpson had been up this year

Dubuque is turning into last years Coe.

3-1 on the road.
0-3 at home.

And there was much rejoicing in Waverly at this news prior to the Knights trip to UD on Saturday ;D

Not near an upset, one bottom tier team squeaking by another bottom tier team. Dubuque needs a defense like Bill Clinton needs an alibi. 300+ yards receiving by one player and win by 3...need some defense.

Offense fills the stands, defense wins championships.

Ok, I wasn't sure where Simpson stood in the pecking order and my thoughts of them date back to their victory over our unbeaten team several years ago.  A broken play in the final minutes turns into a game winning touchdown.  Ouch, I can still picture it in my mind's eye.

Since I'm about 90 pages behind on here, could some of you informed observers shed some light on what's happening in Waverly right now?

Sure is strange to see them @ 3-3 right now.

If I'm not mistaken, '97 was the last time we lost 3 games during regular season.

Couldn't make it up today since we're coming next weekend.   Of course, they play @ DUB when I'm back.
I wanted to see the 2nd coming of Jerry Rice that DUB has.

I too am quite a few pages (actually, the whole season) behind on the board.  Haven't had as much free time at work to read up every day.

Looks like a lack of leadership for the Knights.  They have to be able to bounce back after a loss and not let it go two in a row.  I was only able to look back to 2001, but Wartburg had never lost back to back games in any of those years.

Hopefully they can win out the rest of the year and with some help from the other teams and have a chance to be at the top.

Just back from Waverly and I'm ready to take all the verbal (postings) abuse you want to heap on Knight backers.

I'm not sure what Charlie Kohawk was watching, but that was not a quality Wartburg team he was seeing yesterday.  Perhaps in the first half they were OK, but in the second half they stunk up the place.  I'll admit it had something to do with Coe laying the wood on them.

As is normally the case at homecoming, our regular seats were occupied by some alumni from the class of "52 or whatever and the Warthog clan moved to the northend of the stadium.  Again as usual the infrequent game attending alums clapped politely for both teams resulting in a very tame crowd for a Wartburg game.

Being in the northend of the stands I was able to watch Coe enter and exit the field.  I figured the Knights were in for it in the second half even though they were leading 14-13 at intermission.  Usually the Knight coaching staff makes great half-time adjustments which can turn a close game into one with a bigger spread.  When the Kohawks came off the field and went back on the field at the half, I told Little Warthog we might be in trouble.  Coe just had a certain swagger and attitude that made me think they were on a mission.  Little Warthog said teams often come out with that same type of swagger, but the Wartburg adjustments would carry the day.  Not yesterday.

One former Knight sitting near us gave the opinion the Knights need to hire a Transmission Coordinator to go with the OC and DC.  He thought that coach's job could be to get the Knights in high gear.  There is some truth to that.  It seems everything was going at half speed.  Perhaps 89.1's observation that some leadership is required strikes home.

I dont remember noticing the Wartburg crowd to be any more rowdy than any other place we played at. Second week in a row we have heard from Wartburg backers that they werent quality and they didnt get beat, just didnt play up to their potential (which may be true but this is often related to the other team forcing them to not play as well).

I think the Kanigget's plight is due to graduation losses.  They do not have the same experienced personnel as last year.  These players may be as good, but they don't have the same savvy.

As Central found last year, just reloading isn't a guarantee in this league anymore.

For the most part every team is taking its shot at the Kaniggets...call it a reduced fear factor.

DutchHawk:

Whoa there.
I sure didn't say the Knights didn't get beat.  They got beat like an old bass drum. :-[

I also didn't mean to insinuate they didn't play to their potential.  Hell, who knows, that sorrowful display may be their potential.  I can assure you this team isn't playing like anything we've been familiar with in the last decade.

What is the issue?  I don't know.  Then perhaps we've become spoiled.  After all we're talking about three losses not a losing season as of yet.

Sorry, misunderstood your message when reading it in a hurry. Last week I heard from a Knight backer that BV didnt beat them, Wartburg just played bad...apologies.

I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Wartburg is in danger of losing 2 of 4 with a chance of losing 3 of 4. Central, Luther, Dubuque, and Simpson. I would put the first 3 as having legit shots, although I dont see why Simpson couldnt either. Rough end for the Knights?? Not unless Chuck Norris...I mean Rick Willis can right the ship!

Not picking on any players.  The Knights do have a three year starter at QB that was touted to be the front runner for MVP.  That should be a lot of leadership IMHO.  Having said that one player does not make a team.  If you don't have other players stepping up one player no matter who he is can not win a game for his team.  I know that the Knights are young on the defensive side of the ball are they just as young on the offensive side with the exception of the QB?  That would make a lot of difference if there is a lot of youth.  Quality players if they are young are at a disadvantage.  The big question in my mind is will the Knights fold the tent? or will they step up and finish the season with some pride and play even though it seems that the season is coming to an early end for them?  I don't think that is in the Knights character but you never know if there is a void at the leadership positions apathy can be a cancer that grows.

Great win for the Spartans Saturday! It's certainly not easy to get a win in the IIAC and certainly not away from home. Listening to the game, it was an exciting one down to the end.

I know Purple and D-Dog mentioned it but let's again give some props to Michael Zweifel and Colten Hansen for unbelievable games. I know it takes much more then those 2 to win but for ONE player to break 2 IIAC records in ONE game is absolutely amazing! He was JUST shy of breaking the NCAA record for both as well!!!

Colten Hansen was very efficient and had an amazing game going 31 for 45 for 429 yards. Not bad. I called my old roomate Shawn Tate to tell him his IIAC passing record of 499 yards was in jeopardy and also that Zweifel had broken Tate's counterpart Matt Plummer's IIAC reception/game record.

Also, the season is a success based soley on win/loss record from last year. Any wins from here on out are bonus. Sure, Coach Z, players, and fans would like to be playing for a IIAC championship but like I said last week, one more win and we've improved and most of all, it sounded like they were back to having fun playing football on saturday!

We did it starting 12 freshman. The future is bright.

Hawkeyes won, Spartans Won. Cowboys had a BYE. And 1 of my 2 fantasy football teams won. Not a bad weekend. I am STILL waiting for a weekend in which ALL my teams win! This weekend was "close"  ;D
