Small College Capsules...

Wartburg (3-3, 2-2)

at Dubuque (3-4, 2-3)

When: 1 p.m., Saturday

Where: Chalmers Field, Dubuque

Radio: KWAR-FM (88.9), KWAY-AM (1470).

Last meeting: Wartburg won in overtime, 20-13.

Last week: The Knights lost to Coe, 35-21, while the Spartans beat Simpson, 36-33.

What to watch: Dubuque wide receiver Michael Zweifel broke IIAC single-game records for receptions and receiving yards with a 20 catch, 330-yard, three-touchdown game in the victory over Simpson. The 330 yards is the most in Division III this year. Zweifel leads the IIAC with 78 catches for 963 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Spartans have the top pass offense in the conference, averaging 273.6 per game. Dubuque is second only to league-leader Central in total offense (408.6 yards per game). Quarterback Colton Hansen has thrown for 1,798 yards and 17 scores. Wartburg is looking to snap a two-game losing streak. The Knights turned the ball over four times in the second half of last week's loss to Coe.

Quoting Wartburg coach Rick Willis:

On his team, "The biggest thing is we have to try to be more mistake free. We cannot afford to make the mistakes we've been making in critical situations."

On Dubuque, "The numbers (passing) they put up last week were astounding. Those two guys are a record-setting duo. They have been a team, when they play well, can compete with anybody."

And...

B.Vista (4-2, 3-1)

at (Luther 3-3, 2-2)

When: 1 p.m., Saturday

Where: Carlson Stadium (Decorah)

Last meeting: Luther won 6-3 in Storm Lake last year.

Last week: The Beavers edged Cornell, 24-17, while the Norse fell to ranked Central, 35-17.

What to watch: Buena Vista has won with its defense as the Beavers are allowing only 17.3 ppg. BV is particularly stingy against the run having allowed just 109.8 ypg. The Beavers are led offensively by quarterback Brandon Phelan, who has passed for 1,108 yards and 11 touchdowns against just four interceptions. Quarterback Chris Reynolds continues to lead the Norse. He has rushed for 377 yards and six scores, and has passed for 1,032 and six touchdowns. Luther's receiving corps has been banged up. Darren Oxton is Reynolds favorite target. He caught nine passes for 115 yards and a touchdown against Central. On the season, he has 36 catches for 390 yards in just five games.

Quoting Luther coach Mike Durnin:

On Buena Vista, "They have been playing very well in conference play and I think the reason is they don't turn the ball over. They are winning the turnover battle. They have been tipping the field in their advantage in most of the games they have been playing in."

What a miserable night for high school football down here in SE Iowa.  Mrs. Warthog and I just walked in the house, we actually left a game early.  BB had his Mepo Bulldogs up 27-0 over the L-M Falcons in the fourth quarter so we called it a night.  I'm looking forward to seeing how the playoffs shake out.

The playoffs if you are a 4A team 3-6 can get you in the playoffs. Something is wrong when thats good enough to be in the playoffs. But hey its all about the money  8) 8) 8)

You can be 2-7 in Class A and get in.  Thats a sure sign there are toooooo many classes in Iowa.  Travel budgets and road weary fans should demand an elimination of Class A football before they redistrict.

Good luck to all of the IIAC today.  With the top rush defense going against the bottom rush offense in the Rock Bowl, I'll go out on  limb and say if Loras' pass O can be stopped we'll see another blowout of the 7 touchdown variety.

Go Dutch!

It used to be an accomplishment to just make it to the playoffs. Only way you could guarantee a spot was to win your district, second place had to wait and hope. I agree, get rid of A and cut the playoffs back down (wishful thinking) Now it doesnt mean anything to get into the playoffs, or hell, just put everyone in!

Week end didn't start to well over here. Sons high school team went down 24-21 against a top team.  :-[ Over all record 6-2.
But, the week end is not over.  :o
Have two more games to watch and I'm feeling good about the Dutch! ;D

Before the Linfield faithful come on here, I am borrowing it from them after we beat them in the Miracle in the Mud back in 2001.

It seems to be that it left some doubt for them back then. So, we'll just have to claim it and show how it's suppose to be used! :o

It was from their perspective, and they came back and won a National Title in the following years...so the bar has been set ;)

It certainly seems that since Central has gotten into conference play, they have left no doubt!

Old Dutch and New Storm have good points about too many team in the Iowa High School Football playoffs.  I looked at the brackets this morning and it seems the 4A and A classes are the worst offenders.

The other classes don't seem too bad.  One eight game bracket seem particularly well balanced.  It has 6 teams with 6-3 records (Aplington/Parkersburg, St. Ansgar, Wapello, Starmont, Bellvue , and Eddyville/Blakesburg) & 2 teams with 5-4 records (Lake Mills and Fort Dodge St. Edmonds) playing teams with better records.  I can live with with that, particularly the 6-3 records.

Pairings in Michigan won't be released until Sunday evening, but we have the same problem here.  Having expanded the number of classes up to 8, you sometimes have to dip into 5 win teams to fill out a bracket.  When you have 9-0 matched up against 5-4, it doesn't make for much of a game.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

I know things are different across the nation, but we have two more weeks of high school football here in Arizona. Are we just sitting here solo with a late schedule. I don't want to make it into a reference of good weather, but are the neighboring states finished with their regular season over there?

Illinois finishes today, with pairing announced this evening. We also have some 5-4 teams in the playoffs, but they are supposed to have the toughest schedule, more playoff points.
