Oh Man!!!  I have to visit this board more often.  ;D

footballdaddy. Come to the MWC board once in a while. I will welcome you. I like your style!   8)

All of you should be happy that you still have a BIG rivalry game this weekend. In the MWC it is either "Should Monmouth play their JV team against Knox" or will there be a massive upset? This Wartburg vs. Central is great. Keep it reasonably civil and I will be back.

In the meantime, a couple of you know what is coming....     GO ORANGE KNIGHTS

But more importantly......    GO GREEN KNIGHTS

It sounds as though I should forget the Dutch/Knight football game on Saturday and try to find a matinee showing of the new Christmas Carol movie. The Knights might just as well roll up the tents and join me at the theater.  :-\

The Dutch simply took it to my Knights.  The usual parade of Central players have received their ink, but I want to acknowledge the player I most enjoyed watching.  That is #60, the Central right offensive tackle.  He was all over the place, always seeming to be at the point of attack.  I don't know if he has played like a man possessed all season, but yesterday he was a certified Knight butt kicker.  He did a good job of making the Wartburg d-end ineffective.

There is a good symmetry here though.  The Dutch were coming off a disappointing year, Wartburg and Coe were the other contenders and Wartburg by virtue of Rose Bowl rule really had no playoff chances.  The Dutch took care of business and got the first of three straight Championships.  Since no one in the conference has stayed closer than DBQ in week one (41-27).  I expect the same Saturday, but lets not get ahead of ourselves, The Knights will be hitting hard and anything can happen.

As a UWW fan, I have no familiarity with this year's edition of your team. I have a few questions for those of you who follow the Dutch closely.

1. If the Dutch  were to ever have a hard time running the ball, is their QB/passing game strong enough to carry them to victory?

2. The Dutch sack total of 33 is downright crazy! Do they come with a pressure package or is there a stud or two who are just that good.

3. Is this a team that you see as making a serious Stagg run is the general feeling that winning a couple of games in the playoffs would be a great accomplishment for this group of guys? (I recognize that even making the playoffs is a major accomplishment, I am just trying to get a feel for expectations with this question.)

Thanks!

Not at all,  I think you should show up and cheer on your Knights.  I have no idea who will win this game.  I know that it will be a war.  Last year it was a late FG for the Knights to win, the year before that was a last second FG for the Dutch, the year before that was OT win for the Dutch, then the 05 game, the 04 game was a close Knight win.  Since 01 the Knights have won 5 and lost 3.  So no telling what will happen.  The one thing that is different this year is that the Knights really have nothing but pride to play for.  The other years the Knights were playing for championships and playoff births.

Well this years Dutch team has a running QB and a throwing QB.  Both young men can play the position but one is a better thrower and one is much better at running.  Both can hand the ball off to our running backs.  So if the Dutch running game does get stopped there are receivers to catch it and a QB that can thread the needle if needs be.

They have four down lineman and any one of those is capable of getting sacks.  They don't blitz as much as they have in recent years because of the downlineman they have playing.  I don't think there are enough blockers to double team all four of the down lineman.  So its kind of pick your poison on who to block.

I think this team can get 2,3,4 playoff wins and get to the Stagg.  Will they time will tell.  I know that the O line and D Line are as units the best I have seen since following the Dutch.  If we have to play in another ice storm who knows how it will go.

Their pass efficiency is tops in the conference (or right there in 2nd) So if they have to throw I think they get it done with no major issues.

Central has never been a huge blitzing team, always with 3 to 4 primary down lineman and usually bringing at least 1 more from somewhere on the field. Thats the tough part, you never know who or where they are coming from. Lots of stunting on the dline.

I think this team is pretty young but has the right pieces in place to make a serious run. Time will tell. I would love to see us end the season with a big exclamation point Saturday.

Just kidding, I know he is happy at Wartburg and given what you are probably paying, that is as it should be.

I happen to have 2 kids at Wartburg.
So you screwed up twice, huh?   ;) ;) ;)

Yes, the passing game is capable of carrying us if the running game is stopped.  As others have mentioned, the O-line is pretty strong this year and playing great.  They are opening holes and Zachary is somehow getting extra yardage after the holes close.  He has been amazing this year.  If we have to pass, we have two QB's to choose from and both of them are capable and both have gotten quality playing time in every game.  Bandow is particularly good in clutch, short clock situations with a number of weapons at receiver.

I am going to be different and say that we do have a stud or two on the D-line going after the sacks.  Shane Wong has been leading the conference all year long and when other teams have put extra effort into stopping him, the others get through to where we once again have the top two men with sacks in the conference after Steenhoek was injured.  If Steenhoek can make it back for the playoffs without losing too much speed, watch out.

I am not sure that I would say this is the most talented team that we have had in the past few years.  I thought 2 years ago was one of our best teams and think they would have been final 4, but they could not adapt to the weather conditions against Bethel and an ice storm.  That team was plagued with major injuries all year and really got healthy just in time for playoffs where they were more dominant than in the IIAC.  This year's team is dominating in IIAC and playing with focus, purpose, and a ton of heart.  I think two years ago we had more raw talent, but you can't discount heart and focus.  I would like to think they could make a deep playoff run, but pairings in a loaded west bracket make deep runs for any team in the west a tough challenge.

I would agree that Wong and Steenhoek are very good players and very good rushers.  One thing that you have to consider though is how good they are without the Hill boys and Johny Mc in the middle.  Those three players bring a load of pressure up the middle and allow the ends not to get double teamed so that they can beat their one on one blocks.  Thats why I give the credit to the whole line.  I am not trying to down play Steenhoek or Wong its just as always the Dutch seem to function as a unit not as stars.  The coaches get a huge amount of credit for that.  I bet if you ask those players they could care less about stats, they want the only stat that counts the "W".
