The Central-Wartburg game drew fewer W'burg fans than usual, and everyone where I was sitting was puzzled by that.  The large pep band didn't even show up!

The contest was better than I anticipated.  When one is down 3 scores it's tempting to call it a day.  The Knights, however, kept coming back, and Yordi was impressive.  I was proud of them, and the Central fan who reported he wasn't worried has a short memory or is cocky as h*ll.

I was surprised too.  WB normally packs them in for Central.  I didn't know if there was a fall break  or something going on.

I was the Central fan that wasn't worried.  I have neither a short memory or a cocky as H*ll attitude.  Had the Knights defense been playing better and stopping us I might have been worried, but that just wasn't the case.  I do give you credit for making us battle to the end, but the clock was in our favor by the time the Knights started their comeback.  I believed that our offense could control the clock and that we could score again if needed.  I also believe in the defense that had 2 very nice goal line stands.  Yordi manged to score after we stopped the runner cold.  It was a break, not a break-down.  Haven't you ever believed in your teams's ability to win a game?

I can identify with what Klompen is saying.  Two years in a row, IWU has beaten Hope by only 3 points, yet I (rightly or wrongly) was not the least bit nervous either time.  Perhaps I'm fooling myself, but I don't think it was arrogance; just confidence that (despite many earlier errors) the defense was GOING to get it done.  They did.

Which coaches may be history after this year for whatever reason?

What does it take to get fired in the IIAC?  Who has been shown the door over the years?  Recently, I can only think of Hefty at Luther, Niemann at Simpson, and Brautigam at Dubuque that have been shown the door.

With all the money flowing into UD I think they wanted more results, but I really think they wanted someone that could bring in more local talent.  Zweifel came onto the scene and he is definately bringing in more local kids.  The wins seem to be coming.  It should be interesting what kind of record you will need to keep a job now at UD.

Hefty had 6 years at Luther and went...
2002 (4-6, 3-6 IIAC)
2003 (6-4, 4-4 IIAC)
2004 (6-4, 5-3 IIAC)
2005 (6-4, 5-3 IIAC)
2006 (2-8, 1-7 IIAC)
2007 (5-5, 4-4 IIAC)

Durnin so far has gone...
2008 (5-5, 4-4 IIAC)
2009 (4-5, 3-4 IIAC)
Seems to be pretty much the same results in Decorah.

Jay Niemann had 6 years at Simpson and went...
2002 (6-4, 6-3 IIAC)
2003 (9-2, 7-1 IIAC)
2004 (5-5, 4-4 IIAC)
2005 (5-5, 3-5 IIAC)
2006 (3-7, 3-5 IIAC)
2007 (4-6, 3-5 IIAC)
You can see declining production there.  Is it purely results that get you shown the door?  Were there retention issues or anything else going on for Niemann at Simpson?

Glogowski so far has gone...
2008 (7-3, 5-3 IIAC)
2009 (3-6, 2-5 IIAC)
First year was certainly an improvement.  This year, unless the Storm can get a win at Wartburg this week will see a drop from even anything seen under Niemann.

How long will Luther and Simpson give their new coaches?

Steve Osterberger is in his 4th season at Loras.  His record is...
2006 (4-6, 4-4 IIAC)
2007 (2-8, 1-7 IIAC)
2008 (6-4, 5-3 IIAC)
2009 (2-7, 2-5 IIAC)
Not fantastic, but not any worse than the previous 7 seasons for Loras...
1999 (4-6, 4-6 IIAC)
2000 (4-6, 4-6 IIAC)
2001 (5-5, 4-5 IIAC)
2002 (5-5, 4-5 IIAC)
2003 (7-3, 5-3 IIAC)
2004 (4-6, 3-5 IIAC)
2005 (3-7, 2-6 IIAC)
The difference for Osterberger is he needs to beat Dubuque on a regular basis!!!

Dillon is in his 4th season at Cornell and has gone...
2006 (2-8, 0-8 IIAC)
2007 (2-8, 0-8 IIAC)
2008 (0-10, 0-8 IIAC)
2009 (2-7, 1-6 IIAC)
Not great, but he did just get his first conference win.  And the previous 4 seasons at Cornell went...
2002 (4-6, 3-6 IIAC)
2003 (4-6, 2-6 IIAC)
2004 (2-8, 1-7 IIAC)
2005 (2-8, 1-7 IIAC)
I think Dillon is probably safe at Cornell.

I don't think Willis will fire himself.  McMartin should be safe at Central with all those conference titles he is racking up.  Anderson at BVU seems to be doing well there.  If Staker can keep things going at Coe he should be fine until he hands over the reigns to his son in a few years.

youcantseemestill

I just want to give a public shout of for the trio of linebackers that Coe will be graduating this season.  They are the best collection of linebackers that I have seen in this conference.  Tate Harrison, Calvin Thomas and Ross Yeast have been completely dominant and they deserve the accolades that they might receive at the end of the season.  Those guys will be truly missed and I know 8 coaches that are happy as hell that they are gone after this season!

Were Hefty and Neimann canned? I thought VInny B was the only one that got pushed out.

As for the crowd-
I think Knights fans checked out after the Coe loss when it became evident that for the first time since 1998, Wartburg wouldn't have a chance to win the IIAC title in the last week of the season.
As much as Dutch fans want to think we show up because we're playing you, we actually show up when we both are good, otherwise its just another football game.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

NewKnightDad

I think it has been talked about on here before but it is still up in the air if Willis returns as head coach next year.  I for one hope he is the coach for many years to come but it was pointed out to me last week by some people that nobody knows where the new President stands on having an AD be a head coach.

Willis is the right guy for the job at Wartburg in my opinion.  Go Knights!!!!!
Win or lose we still booze!!

That is an awful shame.... True fans support their teams no matter the record. Fair weather fans "jump on band wagons" when the going gets good  ;D

Nieman was shown the door and the team that went 7-3 last year was his kids . The kids that he brought in then graduated and this year 3-7 or 4-6

NewKnightDad

I think at most away games this year the Wartburg crowd was as large as any home crowd, even at St Norbert we had a great showing.

I didn't take a look at our home crowd last saturday to see how full the bleachers were but I do know there was a good crowd at the tail gate with lots of food and drink for everyone.  ;)

Win or lose we still booze!!

I agree

QuoteOkay, I'm really showing my age here.  Way back in 1988...

Now, that was a great story for here and around the campfire.

Okay, do you agree that I'm really showing my age or that it was a great story???  Okay, both.  Can't fight the truth.   :'(

Okay, Klomp, you're showing your age alright, , but probably in a different way than what you realized.  Central played Augie in the Stagg Bowl in '84, but in 1988, after all that you shared, they beat Augie on an OT TD, then went on to play Ithaca in the championship.

Don't worry, though, there's lots of nice rest homes out there.

Paul Hefty was not asked to leave Luther.  Leaving was entirely his choice.  I think Mike Durnin will stay as long as he wishes.  Luther typically doesn't fire coaches.

Time to get after the Ko-hacks!

We now have nothing to lose, nothing to fear.  It's now only a game again.

Uh oh!  That is the sound of contentment Heys!  Which is fine with me...........   ;D

Clearly not!  All it means is that we are free to focus solely on ruining the Ko-hacks season.  We are free to fly around and not worry some damned streak or can't-win-in-the-IIAC crap.

We are potentially more dangerous because we are now just playing football.

We come in sky high, not beaten down after yet another loss.

Coe has everything to lose...we have nothing to lose.

While you are correct the Rams have nothing to lose anymore, this is as focused of a Kohawk team I have seen in years.  They have one thing on their minds right now and that is to get a win on Saturday to finish 9-1, which would put them as one of the best teams in school history.  They aren't going to let that be ruined with a loss on senior day.

Nope, just thought the Warts had better fans....my mistake! :o

I was there w/ a Wart alumn and he was disappointed w/ the Wartburg attendance.
