They get to spend Friday night in Pella.  I really envy them.  They will never forget it.

That's presuming they actually can stay awake with all the "excitement" of Downtown Pella.    8)

Maybe Walston or others on here might know.  Are there any Cornell alums out there right now that are assistants that might be interested in moving back to Cornell?

Joe Hadachek, the former HC at BV is currently coaching high school football in La Porte City.  About an hour from Mt. Vernon.  Would he be a good fit if interested?  He has taken a high school that never had much success at the 2A level and has gone 7-2 each of the last 2 years at the 3A level.

Though, I do think I would get a chuckle out of seeing Purple Heys at HC, that former Central QB that kept finding ways to beat UD at OC, a former Knight that coaches north of the border at DC, and Walston hob knobing with the money people over golf and expensive dinners to get them to donate money to Cornell Athletics.

And, as William Penn coaches once wore Revolutionary War 3 sided hats on the sidelines.  The Cornell coaches could now start wearing Ram Horns hats on the sideline :o

This all gets back to my larger point about the greater role of athletics as a recruiting tool in Division III.  The changes that Cornell is making to Small will make it marginally more useful to the average student-athlete.  Are Cornell's facilities good, or good enough?  But how do you think the reactions compare when a prospective student sees the gym at Small and hears "We just put in a new floor" versus when the same student sees Levick Arena.  There's no "wow factor" when it comes to Cornell's facilities, especially not like the "wow factor" at Wartburg, UW-Whitewater, Gustavus Adolphus, or any number of other Division III schools.  Until that changes, Cornell is going to keep missing out on the top athletic recruits.

I think we probably have a point to agree upon here...we just differ on how much it will take.  Impressive facilities provide an attraction no doubt.

There is a pragmatic approach going on at Cornell that I think you are missing.  At this point, dressing up the outside provides far less value than the changes inside.  I agree they don't look like much from the outside.  But If I had to incrementally improve things in my house...which is what is happening at Cornell, I would rather start with the new interior and work my way out.  When the Stadium gets its improvements, it is very straightforward to improve the external facades of the remaining buildings.  And they really do need to deal with the bathroom situation thank you very much.

You also suggest that they partner with the MV community.  This, I believe, is the linchpin to move forward.  They have already cooperated on a very nice softball facility with MV...I think the results were superb.   So I look for things to move...they are hopeful for this to be complete by next year, but I would bet that it goes out one more year.

If Cornell were to hire you, you could follow the Bobby Bowden model.  Just stand on the sideline and make strange faces while the assistants do all of the actual coaching.  Then give really odd quotes during the post game press conferences ;D

The pay cut and the move to a cold climate would probably concern Mrs. Heys though, that's where the move would probably get nixed  ;)

I've been off the site for a little bit. Mom has been sick. Heart surgery was needed. She is doing great now and resting.

I'm going to share a little fact about my Mom. She gets very nervous on going to football games and even watching them on TV/internet. In the past 8 years she has gone to two games and watched six games. In those combined eight games her grandsons' teams has lost all of them. That included the one loss season in 2005.

So with that fact in mind my Mom, during her resting period, will not be allowed to watch the games either Friday or Saturday. She has been limited to Andy Griffith, Matlock and the Wheel of Fortune. ;D :o ::)

Hope your Mom makes a speedy recovery, but recommend that you never allow her to listen or watch football ever again, at least if Central is involved.  Two years ago they were known as the cardiac kids, coming from behind to win most conference games.  Didn't have an easy win until we hit St. Johns.  (Quick Dutch fans, give me some Karma, I'm going to need it.)  Wouldn't want them doing anything that would cause your mom to have another episode.  Her health is of utmost concern to the Dutch.   ;)

Got ya coveredd Klomp, that 07 game was the most fun i've had in Pella in many a year.

So, in one post we are to beleive that the Crusaders defense is good vs the run due to the 59 per game opp. average.  yet earlier on Crusader posting says the ASC brings a pass heavy offense to all games, so the d is pass D tested and ready.  Pick your poison,  This Central squad is loaded with options and much more balanced offensively than the stats may indicate.

On the weather side, as much fun as it would be to throw a snow storm at the Texans, they are calling for 56 on Sat. and mostly sun.  Should make for a very entertaining afternoon, and will allow the Dutch weapons to all be effective.

The new softball field that Cornell partnered with Mt. Vernon to build was very successful.  It looks very nice.  Mt. Vernon is a little stubborn when it comes to its football tradition, but with their recent success (or lack thereof) would it be possible to compile funds to build a stadium with field turf that Cornell and MV could share?  MV travels across town to their football field anyway so I could see that being a potential situation, as they already share softball and baseball fields.

Let's face it:  the education you get at Cornell is very similar to the education you'll get at Simpson, Loras, Wartburg, Saint Ambrose, Carleton, or nearly any other Division III school.  There's definitely a difference at the Grinnells and Washington Universities of the world, but as much as Cornell would like to think they are in that class, they aren't.
Excuse this outsider intrusion, just stopped by looking for for playoff buzz ...

I'm not going to wade into the meat of the debate and I'm in no position to put down any any school (except perhaps USTd), but putting Carleton in with Wart, Simpson, Loras, etc and not with Grinnell and Washington seems to be off.

US News has Carleton 8th in national liberal arts. Grinnell is 14th. Wash U. is 12th in national unis. Acceptance rate is 27 Carleton vs. 43 Grinnell. Once you start in with the St. Ambroses and Wartburgs, the stats really change.

Not saying it means all that much, there are all kinds of things that go into a good education. I feel I got a better education at SJU than my much smarter brother got at Carleton and I'm pretty sure he agrees. Still, if you're sorting schools by types, Carleton is a lot closer to the Grinnells/Wash U than the other schools mentioned IMO.

I'm not in this battle (my guys have Lakeland to "worry" about  ;)), but a couple things about UMHB. The most obvious thing you will see is the speed at which their LB's hit the point of attact. I wouldn't mock the rushing defense avg just because they come from a passing conference. They do seem to have an extra gear that is unlike what we see up here. You can't simulate it in practice; it'll definitely be an eye opener to most of you. The first time UWW played the Cru, which was down in Belton, everyone came away from that game heavily impressed at the speed at which they play. Secondly, UMHB beat Mount Union in a snow storm in 04 - they played UWW 2 years ago in snow and cold, Dec cold at WW - weather conditions are not going to bother them as much as you might think. They are playoff tested & that should count for a lot ~ they haven't been able to get over the hump called UWW, but then nobody except MUC has in the last 5 years. Win or lose on Sat., Central is going to know they've been through a war.  I wish you good luck.  :)

BTW, where has dutchhawk been lately; he seems to be MIA during an important time!!  ;)

Thanks for the thoughts. Mom won't be watching any games soon. I took the shortcut off her computer desktop.
