I thought Central's play selection was a bit baffling for the 2 point conversion.

I figured they would spread it out again, but instead it looked like they loaded up to go to the right side.  It appeared that they limited the play to only one side of the field rather than giving Snead the whole field to create if the coverage was there.

Of course the video was dropping frames so I couldn't exactly see...

Oh, it was there! A naked boot and a wide open reciever in the end zone. Just a great defensive play by the pass rusher/guy that was supposed to be covering the wide open reciever.  That was the heartbreaker/ball game right there.

I'm also pretty sure the off sides was called on the kicker, which I have never seen before. Not sure of the college rules but on Sundays, there isn't a problem with the kickers plant foot being in front of the ball.

Yes the offsides was on the kicker.  I'm not going to scour the rule books to prove it was a bad call or whatever, it is what it is, We would have needed at lest two more huge plays to earn the win anyway.

A couple of us old ball coaches were discussing whether the call could have been on his stepping on or over the line on his approach, rather than just the plant foot??  He lined up right on the line and came down it to the ball.  Nothing against the kicker, he did a great job, just one of those plays  that add up to a ball game.

Wow...the IIAC is really stepping it up. I was rooting for both IIAC teams to win. I was hoping Linfield could have a rematch with Central. But maybe next time....great job though by both IIAC Teams...I was especially glad to see that Coe thumped SJU.....great worK!

From the Dead Horse Cafe...

QuoteThis is no way my opinion of an excuse to a loss. I consider it to be a stain on a battle between two great teams that gave it there all on the football field.

Read: Mishap in the Mud

Ohhh. I see, I see. Some one has a horse that pretends to be dead and kicks every once in a while.

I don't think the penalty on the on side kick could possible compare to the Miracle in the Mud. Now were you a player, parent or the tuba player running on the field when the touch down was scored?? :P :D

And you don't read "Mishap in the Mud" you google "Miracle in the mud" and watch it.   Central and Linfield battled to OT in the playoffs at the Catdome.  Linfield scored a FG in their OT attempt with the ball.  Central was stopped and had to go with a FG attempt to tie.  But in the mud, the kick never got off the ground.  Hit, then lineman, Reid Evans in the backside.  He turned around and picked the ball up while Linfield fans and players flooded the field after the apparent win.  Meanwhile, Evans hands the ball off to Central running back, Joe Ritzert who runs through the fans and players flooding the field to score the game winning TD.  Thus the start of the Linfield battle cry "LEAVE NO DOUBT" and Central's mantra, play until the whistle blows.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I just hope you don't have one of those days, like when your QB is puking on the sidelines, your #1 running back is out and your best defensive player is just a shell of his pre injury self.
Coe weathered two out of three and still won. Well, our QB wasn't puking, but he was sidelined. I'm not going to say I told you so, because I didn't. Coe fans didn't talk much smack here this week, because we didn't have any reason to. We hadn't accomplished anything other than a ticket to the dance.

Johnnie fans, by contrast, made plenty of bold predictions. They had history on their side, for sure. But the arrogance only fueled Coe's fire.

Congratulations Kohawks on a great victory over a proud football program in a very hostile environment. Keep the same approach and demeanor you've shown all season, and anything can happen. If nothing else, you'll walk off the field with your heads held high.

Congratulations Coe on a great win in Collegeville...I was most impressed by your LBs...and the way you took advantage of the Johnnies mistakes...

Good luck against the Tommies, it will be a tall order to win but after what I saw today you have a chance, but if your QB is not at full strength it will be tougher yet.

Charlie we are proud of our guys...it was not so much arrogance as it was pride, you should be proud of your team and I am in here and posting this to sing their praises a bit...today you were the better team, enjoy it and see where the road takes you, but definitely enjoy it.

Central was the best team we played all year. The size of the line was more D1 than D3. Just glad we could hold on at the end. Great college football game regardless of the level. For those that live in Pella we received wonderful hospitality during our short stay and according to some of our players, your kids played the game hard without any trash talking. That in and of itself is something to be proud of.

Thanx for the sentiments! Playing hard without talking smack is a pillar of Central football. Besides, you should see our coaches. They'll pull an All-American if he starts mouthing off in someones face. Doesn't matter who it is. Now, some players have a real mean streak (see DutchHawk circa 2005) but they keep their mouths shut. Hope you had a chance to check out the pastry shops.

In 2007 the Minny guys drove me crazy, this year I liked having them around.  This year they seemed like they were having fun and were proud of their team.  I didn't think anything they were doing was any different that the Wartburg/Central banter we had on here this year.  The difference is we just aren't used to having them on here.

My thoughts on the Central / UMHB game...

First of all - it obviously lived up to the hype as the best game of the first round.  And UMHB was just as, if not better, than advertised.  An incredible amount of speed, and despite Central's size, the Cru controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

With the regards to the onside kick offsides, I don't know the exact rule in college, but as someone stated earlier, it's legal in the pros for your plant foot to be across the line.  Viggers kicks his onside kicks very uniquely - as he runs right down the line of scrimmage to do so.  However, I don't think it was a case that he crossed the line on his approach, because when the ref was giving his explanation to a VERY livid coach McMartin, he kept making kicking type motions with his leg, as if the penalty occurred as the kick took place.  And no matter what the actual penalty was, there was never a penalty flag thrown on the play.  That was frustrating to say the least.

To be honest, the Cru gave Central a big boost to even allow them to be in that situation.  I'm particularly talking about a stunning call on third and one from around midfield where they threw one of their only deep balls of the game, and it fell incomplete.  Why do you break out that call?  They could have pretty easily gotten a yard just handing it to the fullback, allowing them to milk at least a couple of more minutes off the clock.  I mean, if you're a Central fan, that was a huge gift, and I was very appreciative, but I didn't get it from a Cru perspective.

A discussion we had on the radio regarding going for 2.  Central's down 15 and they score with five minutes left.  They choose to kick the extra point to get within 8.  I like that, because it gets you within one score.  If you go for 2 and miss, you're down two scores.  My color guy thought they should have gone for 2 for two reasons.  First, if you're going to miss the 2, you'd rather know now.  Second, it's a much less pressure situation going for 2 with 5 minutes as opposed to having to get it with the game on the line.  Thoughts?

Also, hell of a defensive play by the Cru defender who knocked that 2 point pass up into the air.  Jordan Leuschen was WIDE open, and it appeared like it was going to be an easy pitch and catch.  That guy just came out of nowhere to make a great play and send his team to Oregon.

Tough way for Central's season to end, and I'm still bitter about having such a great team shipped in for a first round game.  No doubt that the Dutch will be back next year.

As a Cru fan, I don't get it either.  I can only assume they were trying to catch Central stacking the line.  If that's the case I want Noack in to throw that pass, not Bailey.

By the way.  I enjoyed the broadcast yesterday.  I enjoyed it enough that I listened to you guys instead of the UMHB radio team.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

The Johnnies played a very untypical game for them....Crawl back into your hole now, because I didn't see you before the game, so that must be where you were.

We have quiet confidence.  A trait the Johnnies cannot comprehend, go back to your board and stop making a fool of yourself.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

I totally agree with how they played it, kicking the extra point first and then going for 2. It's a mind thing. If they would have gone for the 2 and missed, I think that would have killed the moral of the players. The thought of, 'We're just one score away", kept the momentum going and continue to march down the field.
Also it would be so hard to say that the game would have played out the way it did, going for 2 and making it. CRU may have changed their play calling with that in mind also. Goes with the should of, could of and would of's.
