Congratulations to David Zachary on being named a 2009 Gagliardi Trophy finalist.

I also tell them that your education can take you way farther than a football, baseball, track, or basketball will - that's just the bottom line.

Wow, didn't even know he was being considered.  Thanks for the news and good luck to DZ.  He is a great kid and had a break-out season.

I was reading Coach Staker's bio and noticed the following information.  Having been the head coach of three different sports, an assistant at a fourth, and athletic director over everything; this coaching gig at Coe has to be like a part-time job for him.  ;)

Staker spent 35 years as head football coach at Fredericksburg (Iowa) High School. While at Fredericksburg, Staker also served as head baseball coach for 31 years, head boys' track coach for 28 years and assistant boys' basketball coach for 36 years. He served as the high school and middle school athletics director at Fredericksburg for 31 years.

I'm here, just been reading all the posts lately with no opinions or comments to post I guess.  I won't be making the trip to the game this weekend as I have plans for thanksgiving already.  I'll be back home sitting in my treestand waiting for that monster buck to walk by while eating lots of food in between.  I'm hoping St Thomas has a webcast for the game so I can watch it, but haven't really looked into it (anyone know?).  I haven't heard much news on Boyle other than last Saturday where he hurt his throwing shoulder pretty bad and initial thought was that he was done for the year.  I still think we have a shot of winning the game with our defense and special teams as long as our offense puts up a few points.  The backup QB is Pat Wallace who has some decents legs on him, just hope he can overcome his nerves and limit his mistakes.

Congrats to Zachary...where are you getting this information?  who are the other finalists?  Even if he is a long shot to winning, I would think Boyle would be another IIAC player to be considered for this honor as well.

All it took was a look at the d3football front page....duh  ;D  I'll answer my own question:

The 10 players who are on the ballot: DePauw quarterback Spud Dick, Mount Union linebacker Judd Lutz, Susquehanna running back Dave Paveletz, Union linebacker John Peters, UW-Whitewater kicker Jeff Schebler, Mississippi College quarterback Adam Shaffer, Monmouth quarterback Alex Tanney, Augustana tackle Blaine Westemeyer, Case Western Reserve quarterback Dan Whalen and Central running back David Zachary. Tanney is a junior, while the rest are seniors.

congrats to Zachary again...maybe I'm biased here, but I don't think you would hear any criticism if Boyle was on that list with the year he had...I mean for sh*ts sake, a kicker made the list ;D

The Kohawks are gonna kick the Tommies butts and are gonna beat them with large blunt objects and make them bleed, um, alot, and make them wish they played soccer...

Boyle does not deserve to be a Gagliardi finalist.

I am sure Pat will give us our yearly explantion on what makes a Gagliardi winner, but it is not all about what a player does on the field.  It is not the D-3 Heisman!

Without Boyle and Hammes, I would say Coe's chances would be severely hindered.  Getting mop-up duty does not equate to playoff game experience for Wallace.  Coe's offensive strength maps to the passing threat headed by Boyle...no Boyle, not the same passing threat (in relative terms).  I see this as too much for the defense to overcome.

When I predicted the Kohacks'  1st round victory it was predicated on their Knockout Defense AND their efficient, low-turnover offense.  I still have no doubts about their defense, but there is considerable doubt...for the moment, healthwise...on offense.

Anybody know if UST has any injury issues?

That's more like it.  Maybe since St. Thomas is the home team, if I want to talk smack I should go over there.  Nah.

I realize that the award is not a d3 Heisman trophy.  From the explanation on the award, "the award is presented to the outstanding football player in NCAA Division III, honors excellence in athletics, academics and community service."

I have no idea what Boyle's academics are for the year since he is only a soph (I believe you have to be at least a soph to be considered on the IIAC all academic team which hasn't came out yet, but could be wrong).  Maybe he doesn't have a great enough GPA for the award and that's fine; but right now since we have no information on any of the finalists academic accomplishments it only leaves what they've done on the field.  And from my opinion, Boyle had an impressive season.  Do I think he had a great enough season to win the award, probably not; but I could see him as a top 10 finalist.  Again, this is all based on the fact that I have no information either Boyle's academics or any of the finalists.
