If he leads Coe to a win Saturday I will write him in if anyone sends me a ballot.

I just noticed something that I thought was pretty ironic and funny....I believe I remember reading on the posts and writeups of Pat's that the NCAA does not seed teams for d3 playoffs.  Then how come on the playoff bracket they put "Higher seeds host"???

BoBo,

I've posted a number of times that the published tuition gap between publics and privates is an illusion, since relatively few private students pay full 'list' price (not all that many public students do either, but the gap between public and private is usually no where near as great as the 'list' prices).  However, as regards the 'greyshirting', my experience is that at most privates (perhaps publics as well, not sure) aid (other than loans) is limited to four years.  Thus (if my impression is correct) that 'greyshirt' year would be full list price.  And at list price, the privates are at a significant disadvantage.

Don't shoot the messenger - I've argued for years against the 'publics oughta be kicked out of d3' crowd that both sides have relative advantages, and price differential is highly exaggerated.  But for this particular situation, I think publics perhaps do have a clear advantage.

I don't think publics should be kicked out either.  But lets not deny there is a significant financial advantage compared to privates, at least in my neck of the woods.

Case in point:

Most MIAC schools are running around low to mid 30's for the total package (Tuition + Room/Board).

A quick search (http://uwhelp.wisconsin.edu/payingforcollege/costs/tuitionfees.asp) shows some of the most successful WIAC programs are running from $6,300 (WI/MN resident, also only under $10,000 for non-resident) at UWSP to about $11,000 in-resident at UWW.  That is a significant gap to make up with aid.  Most DIII students, public or private are not getting $20,000 to $25,000 a year in grants and scholarships.

I know at Bethel, the admissions department won't accept 'sports related' leadership positions in HS when giving things like leadership grants, per their interpretation of NCAA rules.  That puts the Athletes at a significant disadvantage when competing for some of those grants.

As for 'grey shirting.'  I can't speak to how widespread the practice is.  At Bethel it would cost a kid around $15,000 to take an extra semester.  I know of at least two examples of MN kids at WIAC schools who were 'grey shirted.'  When we played at LAX in 06 we talked to one kid, said he practiced in camp, was cut and given a playbook and lifting program. Told to run routes on his own with the other cut guys and get ready for next year.

Granted, this is only 1 kid.  I don't know how widespread it is or how intentional, but it does seem to be happening. And lets not kid ourselves.  While a 'grey shirt' is certainly not as beneficial as a red shirt season with all the experience of practice, most coaches would readily admit an extra year of maturity, both physically and emotionally can go a long way on the fb field.

Congratulations to David Zachary on being named a 2009 Gagliardi Trophy finalist.
Wow, didn't even know he was being considered.  Thanks for the news and good luck to DZ.  He is a great kid and had a break-out season.

Congrats to Zachary...where are you getting this information?  who are the other finalists?  Even if he is a long shot to winning, I would think Boyle would be another IIAC player to be considered for this honor as well.

All it took was a look at the d3football front page....duh  ;D  I'll answer my own question:

The 10 players who are on the ballot: DePauw quarterback Spud Dick, Mount Union linebacker Judd Lutz, Susquehanna running back Dave Paveletz, Union linebacker John Peters, UW-Whitewater kicker Jeff Schebler, Mississippi College quarterback Adam Shaffer, Monmouth quarterback Alex Tanney, Augustana tackle Blaine Westemeyer, Case Western Reserve quarterback Dan Whalen and Central running back David Zachary. Tanney is a junior, while the rest are seniors.

congrats to Zachary again...maybe I'm biased here, but I don't think you would hear any criticism if Boyle was on that list with the year he had...I mean for sh*ts sake, a kicker made the list ;D

Yep. A kicker who made the National Honor Society, is a leader in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and ...oh yeah, who just happened to score more points than any kicker who EVER kicked in college football at any level. Not to mention holding the D3 records for both most field goals and highest field goal percentage. All while kicking in Wisconsin!

Old Dutch

Well, I voted for DZ.  Don't know much about his academics, but he was a good team player for three years and when his time to shine came he rose to the occasion.  Boyle had a great year but we know nothing of his career yet.  I'd say the UWW kicker is more deserving (55 of 56 PATs!!!)

Since all of us at the IIAC site are fans of private institutions, I'll share this bit of wisdom with you.

Paying for a quality education at a private college is like paying for quality oats.  Sure there are cheaper oats you can buy, but if you want them before they've gone through the horse you have to pay a little more.

There is speculation on the MIAC site that the Tommies will have a small crowd on Saturday.  It sounds like a good chance for Kohawk fans to counter the UST home field advantage by sending hundreds of Red/Gold crazies to Minnesota on Saturday.

...plus, when he goes home, it's to some place called Davenport. I think that's somewhere down in this area if I'm not mistaken.  ;)

Quotedone for the season with a separated shoulder.

That is a shame and a really tough ball bounce.

Speedy and complete recovery to him. Best recovery therapy:swimming and surfing.
Gonna have to R&R down in Oceanview, KS, I guess.

With Boyle goes the 'hacks chances, I'm afraid.

I have a ton of respect for their defense, but losing the POY with a week to prepare, during a Holiday Week?   :o

If Staker pulls this off he ought to apply for the soon to be vacant Notre Dame job.   :D

Or at least give him a Crunchberry bonus. :)
