I think Staker showed that he is not past his "sell by" date and was in fact, a good hire by Coe College.

Even if he was their fourth choice.

Dubuque's Bricktown restaurant has closed:  http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/78322707.html

That place opened up the fall I went off to college, but I heard it was doing gangbusters for the first couple years.  But the food and service went downhill after a while.  I probably haven't been in there for two and a half years, and probably haven't had their food in four.  That said, I seriously doubt it'll be long before they get a new owner for the building.

My wife and I would dine there every time we visited Dubuque.  I already showed her the TH article on the closing.  Very sad news.  But, resteraunts rarely have a long lifespan...unless you are Breitbachs in Balltown ;)

Where you been Sportswipe? Haven't heard much from you.  Only two posts in ten days.  Good to see you haven't lost a step.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Sounds like the IIAC COULD be losing Cornell but Luther and Coe staying.

http://gazetteonline.com/sports/2009/12/02/cornell-may-be-dropping-out-of-the-iowa-conference

"We like the Iowa Conference. We're happy to be a part of the Iowa Conference," Coe President James Phifer said. "We'll see what (else) happens."

"Our travel costs and missed class time would have been increased significantly," Luther President Rick Torgerson said. "So for that reason, we have decided not to continue discussing this further."

The seven schools wishing to explore a possible ACM conference with Cornell are Midwest Conference members. Cornell President Les Garner said he hoped the group would have a next-step meeting set up by the end of the year.

"Eighty percent of our students are from outside the state of Iowa," Garner said. "In fact, the states we draw the next highest number of students are Illinois and Wisconsin ... The attraction (of a new conference) for us is to be able to play where we recruit heavily. We also have high numbers of alumni in those states."

That sounds like it's almost inevitable that Cornell will be leaving.  I am happy Coe and Luther plan on staying.  I would also think if Cornell left that would affect their rivalry with Coe.  Which would be ashame.  I also found it interesting that the Coe president said "We like the Iowa Conference, we're happy to be a part of the Iowa Conference"  While the comment from Luther was "Our travel costs and missed class time would have been increased significantly, so for that reason, we have decided not to continue discussing this further."  Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the IIAC from Luther, which is sad to say.

From that article, they would basically reforming the old MWC, without Coe and without new members St. Norbert and Illinois College.

I loved how the IIAC basically had a 4 groups of 2 schools near each other that were also rivals, then I thought we just needed to add a school near BV.  Now, if Cornell leaves that will put an end to all of that.  I wouldn't think trading 1 Methodist school for another by adding Iowa Wesleyan would be a very good trade.

The comments from Luther bring up something I didn't think about before. With one-course-at-a-time, you can't afford to miss too much class. You cover a lot of material in one day.

I think that Luther's response was appropriate -- academics (which are at the root of this debate - seemingly) are first and foremost. My question: why would a school feel at adventageous to compete athletically in a conference with like-minded academic institutions? How do they feel that similar coursework in the classroom would affect their athletic performance on the field/court?

Ditto. Every time I headed to Dub, or through it, I tried to make sure & time it when they would be open. I was there once or twice this summer & they weren't that busy (but I was there @ "off" times to avoid the rush so didn't think much of it) I thought the food was still pretty good, priced ok (unless you take your 2 college boys & their 12 yr old brother). It is sad news.

I don't know what all the hoopla was about over Wartburg taking their roster down. The team picture is still up. All you have to do is count! ;D

Interesting article about Iowa Wesleyan College thinking about switching from NAIA to D3.  After reading the article, it sounds like the President is more for it than any of the coaches.  Ex Football Coach makes a great point about the lack of facilities and how difficult it would be to recruit to IWC if it was a D3 school.  Also sounds as if they decide to go D3, they may be looking at a league in Missouri.

IWC struggles where they are at now...football wise, it would be very difficult for them to be competitive in the IIAC.

According to "The Iowa Conference Story," from 1923-1960, Iowa Weslelyan's record was 93-100-10.  I remember in the 60's before they left the IIAC, they weren't much of a threat ... maybe that has something to do with the current coaches not wanting to move to D3.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Interesting quote from that article..."Next year we play Coe (College, a Division III school in the IIAC) in football. If I remember correctly they called our football coach. Other times I've tried to contact schools and it's like, 'we can't work it out.'"
