I hope everyone gets home safely tonight.  Put an extra log on the fire and stay put.  This ice reminds me why I prefer the winters in Iowa to the ones we had in St. Louis.

Klompen:  That is a neat thing happening in Pella.  I hope things go well for all the families adopting the little ones from Haiti.
The best thing about it is that four of the children make 2 sibling pairs that are with each pair being adopted by a family so that they get to stay together.  Bet this weather was a shocker for them though.  Welcome to your new home, trying playing outside on ice.   :(

I think Wartburg will get things worked out.  Their main problem was that while President Ohle raised $90 million in 10 years, he also spent $110 million on building projects during that time.  If Wartburg stops with all the building projects for a few years and concentrates on paying off debts they should be ok.

Or, I suppose what this money trouble means is that pretty soon you could have a 2.0 high school GPA and an 16 ACT, but if you have rich parents you will now be admitted into Wartburg.  That, and a bus load of Dominoes pizzas after football games is over and players will be left with trying to scrounge orange and black oreos from the warthog tailgate ;D ;D ;D

Seriously though, every school goes through a crisis like this from time to time.  Wartburg will come out of this.  And really, as far as athletics.  Wartburg doesn't recruit nationally like D1 schools.  I don't think athletics budgets will suffer too awfully bad.  Which is no gouda for the other IIAC schools.  We'll still have to bring it with our A game if we want to beat the Knights.  Which is how I want to see it.  I want my Spartans to beat the Knights at their best, and not a weakened version of the Knights.

I agree w/ Wartburg isn't going anywhere.

I think Wartburg has chosen a path/budget w/ less wiggle room (each incoming freshman/transfer will be that much more important to Wartburg financially).  The debt rating comes into play for future debt/borrowings....it will be much more expensive for Wartburg to build/expand.

I'm sure everything at Wartburg is fine, although if I were a student there I might steer my education away from the Business Department.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Quote from the actual article Charlie posted above:

Wartburg raised its tuition by 4.9 percent this year to $26,650, Shapiro said. But he also said the school averages more than $10,000 per-student in financial aid.

I corrected it........
Wartburg raised its tuition by 4.9 percent this year to $26,650, Shapiro said. But he also said the school averages more than $15,000 per-student-athlete in financial aid.

I feel sorry for the non-athletes that only get about $5000 of assistance in scholarships and grants a year. They have to pay for all the football players to go to school  ;D

On a more serious note, if he is reporting that wartburg AVERAGES $10,000 in grants/scholarships per student, that is a discount rate of 38%. It's not horrible, I have heard reports that Clarke College here in dubuque is having such a tough time recruiting students to attend that their discount rate is around 45%. (basically BUYING students to attend)

I know back in the mid-90's, when UD was in financial trouble, the discount rate was somewhere between what clarke and wartburg's is now. Thankfully, the ship has been righted the past decade and UD's discount rate is closer to 30% now.

Lower discount rates correlate directly to the financial health of the institution.

North Park about four years ago slashed tuition (and about the same amount from student aid).  Net revenue per student remained roughly the same, but enrollment is up over 30%.

Sticker shock, rather than actual net price, seems to scare away a lot of folks.

The business dept is FINE, (my son is a student in that dept)  It was past leadership(?). I'm sure if the business dept and student investment class were running the endowment it would not have been as aggressive as it was under JackO.

NCAA might have concussion rule change in football

Monday, Jan. 4, 2010
DETROIT -- The NCAA's director of health and safety says the governing body is considering a rule change that would allow football officials to remove players from games if they show signs of a concussion.

Dr. David Klossner divulged the proposal Monday in response to a question from Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., during the House Judiciary Committee hearing on the legal issues related to football head injuries.

Klossner was asked if the NCAA would react to what happened with fired Texas Tech coach Mike Leach and player Adam James. Cohen said James should've been sent to get medical help and not to a shed when he had a concussion.

Leach has denied he mistreated James, son of former NFL player and ESPN analyst Craig James.

Allowing refs the ability to remove players showing signs of concussion seems a no-brainer (sorry; pun intended :-[), but what would be the signs?  Absolutely, the zebras should have the authority if coaches are irresponsible, but I have trouble imagining this actually working in practice.

I am not sure that this is a good idea.  Refs are not medically trained.  They can stop the play to get the player medical attention.  The medical staff should be the proper people to make that decicsion.  The refs have always had the ability to stop the game and remove an injured player.

My son heard today that former All-Conference DE Nico Botembe died today of Lupus. Let's all say a prayer for his family. No one should pass away at 25.

That is such sad news.  I met Nico after the Central/Wartburg game in 07.  Central had just won by a fieldgoal late in the game and Nico came up to my son to congratulate my son.  That showed me that he had a lot of class.

I think this is a pretty stupid idea. How can a ref spot in a kid. The first sign of a small concussion is the kid not acting normal, which is something the coaches/trainers can look for. Trainers usually are watching each kid as they come off the field to make sure they don't have the visual signs. In my experience (at the D3 level) trainers have more power over coaches when it comes to kids being able to play/not play.

Boise St. is well known for their blue field.  Now, Eastern Washington is planning on installing a red field at their football stadium, thanks to a 500k pledge from an alum.  http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Eastern-Washington-literally-seeing-red-over-new?urn=ncaaf,216240

If you had 500k burning a hole in your pocket and you wanted to give it to your favorite IIAC school.

Would you...

A - Pay to put in a field the color of your team?

B - Keep it green?

C - Go from turf back to grass?

D - Put a picture of your smiling face at midfield?

E - Luxury suite with your name on it that you can stay warm in?

F - Build a 2nd home across the street from campus to serve as your headquarters during the season?

G - Use the funds to hire a better coach?

H - Your answer here________________
