Warthog,
Was there a pace car with flashing lights? That is a very good question. Yes. There have been many questions as far as to the accident. Also, a lot of these questions fall into the what ifs. Questions, that I would have to believe, are going around and around in the parents heads.
This tragic accident has been followed on the news for the past few days. I believe more attention has been given to this particular story because of his family. His dad, Dan Mayasich, is part of the ABC news here in Phoenix. His grandfather, John Mayasich, is an Olympic gold medalist of the USA hockey team. One of the broadcasts contained a full detail of the race.
They had everything from pace cars, signs and on duty police officers. They said that they did everything except close the freeway. My son said the word is that Robbie was very close to the next check point and was left alone and that was when the accident happened.
The reason I asked for prayers for the driver is because she stopped. She is the one that called for help and stayed with Robbie until they arrived. She was not drinking and I'm sure this lady is under the nightmarish state of what has happened.
Since Robbie's accident there has been three more pedestrians hit by cars here in Phoenix. One accident the driver hit two people and took off. The other accident involved an elderly lady in an electric wheel chair. She passed away shortly after the accident. That driver also took off.
Can Robbie's accident have a silver lining?  The tremendous gift of being an organ donor may be it. Is it the awareness of they way people are driving. I really don't know.
Thanks Again,

Will any of you be at the NCAA D3 Wrestling Tournament on Friday and Saturday?  I'm of the opinion that this could be the year a team other than Augsburg or Wartburg takes away the championship hardware.  I hope not, but it seems other teams are a little closer this year.

I find it "interesting" that the Spartans aren't mentioned in the article. Wait a minute, no I don't....I find it TYPICAL that the Spartans aren't mentioned in the article. They qualify 3 wrestlers, of which, 2 are #1 seeds and one of which is a defending national champion. IF a miracle happens and both win national championships, then the Spartans could finish in the top 5 in the nation. But, at least 6 other colleges were mentioned in the article and not the Spartans.

Go figure......but I like it better this way, underestimated and underappreciated.
Coach McGovern and staff deserve some accolades for their accomplishments in building the program from NOTHING to one of the best in the nation. I might also mention that Josh Terell and Evan Brown did not win state championships in high school. They developed in his program. That also goes to show you how great of a "players-coach" he is.

Good luck Spartans and the rest of the IIAC wrestlers!

You know a lot of Dubuquers that subscribe to the Courier?  Its a Waterloo/Cedar Falls paper, for God's sake.  Why would they go out of their way to mention a school that's not in their readership area or a legitimate national title contender.  That'd be akin to the Sioux City Journal doing a story about the top high school basketball players in the MAC conference.

Agreed, does the TH do many stories on non-dubuque schools?

doolittledog

If that school has some sort of Dubuque connection the TH will.  There are lots of stories in the TH about Wartburg and other IIAC schools when that school has a Dubuque native that does well.  If the TH does a story about the D3 wrestling tourney, they would lead with the Dubuque angle, with a very little tidbit about the other schools.

I understand your point about not many Courier subscribers in Dubuque.  But the Courier does do weekly capsules of Wartburg, Luther and Upper Iowa.  I can't imagine Decorah and Fayette have loads of Courier subscribers on the books.

And you know, us Spartan fans are at our best when we think the world is against us :P

NewKnightDad

Actually I believe the Courier has circulation in the Fayette, Decorah area.  As a young man I used to have the paper route in West Union and delivered the courier in the afternoon.

That was about 30 years ago however. :-\
Win or lose we still booze!!

I was also quite amazed not to see anything about the Spartans in the Courier write up.  I can hardly wait until tomorrow to watch the UD coaches.  Those guys work up as much sweat as the team.  Last year they were one of my favorite parts of the weekend.  They are an enthusiastic pair.

Perhaps more interesting than the Spartan slight in the Waterloo Courier was the total lack of coverage in the Cedar Rapids Gazette.  Maybe the hardcopy edition had some coverage, but as of 2:30 this afternoon the on-line edition had absolutely nothing.  That was a real shame.  Your city is hosting the event.  The two host schools are both likely to finish somewhere between 1st and 7th in the tournament.  Visitors to the city will want to read the local perspective. Then the local paper doesn't seem to know or care that a national championship event is happening in their midst.  Unbefrigginlievable.

Talks up the 3 UD wrestlers in the tourney as well as UW-Platteville wrestlers.  Also mentions Wartburg and Coe and the number of wrestlers they qualified.  The TH does slight Cornell and Luther with no mentions of their programs ;)

All is not fair in love and wrestling!  Jon McGovern, a Central grad, coaching at UD?  Blasphemy!  I thought having Jen Walker at WB doing volleyball was bad enough!  At least your schools know where to find great coaches.    ;D ;D ;D
