Pat is right again!

voila - French word - sort of sounds like Walla Walla, Washington

I stand corrected.  Nice catch Pat.

By the way; I'm married to an English teacher, my mother was an English teacher, my sister was an English teacher, my mother-in-law was an English teacher, my aunt was an English teacher, my uncle was an English teacher, and my cousin is an English teacher.  Regardless of that pedigree, my spelling is terrible and my grammar is worse.

That is why you will find my material on D3Boards instead of the New York Times.

Tonights rain brought with it some cool weather.  Let's just start football already!!!

IIAC schools need to do a better job of archiving game film on their websites so I can just keep watching games throughout the year.  And by IIAC schools I mean Dubuque ;D

Luther's video archive link ... Click on "here" where it says:
Click here to access archived broadcasts.

Here's Luther's video archive link

Thanks for that link.  With Dubuque playing at Luther next fall it looks like I will be able to watch replays of that game...if Dubuque wins, that is ;)

With the technology we have today.  And especially with schools like BV, Luther, Loras and Wartburg that offer majors in broadcasting you wouldn't think it would be too hard or expensive to put something together like this...http://www.gohawks.com/

I would think something similar to that would be a huge advantage for a D3 school in attracting kids to their campus.  I know Wartburg has this site...http://www.wartburgcollegefootball.blogspot.com/  again, I think 5WOL found that site originally.  Are there any other IIAC schools with something similar???

One of the first "ratings" magazines has hit the news stands.  Two IIAC teams get early mention: Central #13 - Wartburg #22.  Usually these are wild guesses.  I put more stock in what Pat and his crew say later in the summer.  Just the same the early love makes for good conversation starters.

The Knights and the Dutch both have early season games against non-conference opponents listed on the Lindy's top 25.  Wartburg plays #19 Monmouth on September 4th, while Central goes against #25 Augustana September 11th.

Don't shoot the messenger.  Even as a Knight fan, I think that #22 may be a little far fetched.  Coming off a 6-4 season and not having a quarterback with experience, I'd rather see the Knights build into a season that has them poll rated in December instead of June.

DANG!!! Wart be able to play the disrespected card.

But I guess it can look at as respect for the program by voters.

Here is an article from the Press-Citizen about Wartburg College awarding scholarships to local kids.

Am I reading this correctly?  400 incoming freshmen are getting presential scholarships ranging from $10,000 to full tuition?  First off, how many incoming freshmen will Wartburg have?  Second, is this normal for most of your student body to be getting 10k in scholarships?  Third, does Wartburg have this much money to give away?  I'm old and out of the loop now as far as how much money a typical student gets now days.  Just curious.

These polls are all about name recognition, and little else. Pat and crew do a decent job, but everyone else looks as D3 as an afterthought. Wartburg has been respectable enough in recent years to get thrown into the mix in some of these polls.

That being said, I of course think Central should have been higher. Think: top 5 or so....  ;) What were these people thinking??  ;D

My theory is that Coe's campus expansion is reaching a final phase and that the administration is offering a little extra financial aid to student-athletes in the high visibility sports to woo additional alumni donors in the coming years.  Any thoughts?

Good luck to Coe and all of your efforts.

Hmmmm.........

Sounds like what that fiscally irresponsible school is accused of doing. Which school is next in selling their souls to the devil?

Definitely not allowed by the NCAA.  Amazing how hard it is to understand a simple rule like no preferential aid to athletes because of their athletic ability.  Maybe it is the area of the state... ;D

Wartburg has a  "National Letter of Intent"?   ???  Why?  I suppose it could make an ego stroke statement for the kid.  For me it just made me laugh.   ::)

Let me clarify this.  From reading an article from a couple of years ago, it had said that the average IIAC school gave out about 15k - 18k per student in finantial aid.  I was just figuring most students would get a bundled up package where some money would be from academic scholarships, some money would come from work study, and some money might come from a music scholarship or some other type of scholarship.  I didn't figure 400 incoming freshmen would ALL be getting a Presidential Scholarship.

I don't find this article surprising at all, hasn't wartburg been buying students for years   ;D

It's really a simple recruiting model if you think about it:

1.) Wartburg is located in the center of Iowa
2.) Wartburg knows to earn local respect, support, and interest, it must recruit a majority of students from within a 150 mile radius of campus
3.) Wartburg also knows that to get the "better" student athletes from within that area, it must "pay" more for them, hence give them better financial aid packages then their biggest competitors--Central (athletics) and Luther (academics/music, etc) and others in selective areas

= wartburg awarding students "rich" financial aid packages

Both central and luther have longer and more successful traditions in certain areas such as football and music as "examples".

But, administration was smart, they realized they could "buy" the better student athletes in all sports after following football's lead and that would help them win all sports trophies.

But, the question on the strategy is, are these large scholarships hurting the financial situation for the college in the long run ???

The strategy may work or may hurt the college financially in the long run, only time will tell.

PS- I find the "letter of intent" thing funny. That is all about wanting good press for the college, the high school coaches wanting the press, and a kid and his parents wanting to feel "big time" because no D1 or D2 universities offered him a full ride. I would LOVE to see that kids financial aid package!!  ;D

No respect for the Kohawks, coming off a 10-2 season and a final ranking of #10 from D3Football.com.  Not to mention, they return pretty much everyone minus a few linebackers. ;)

In general terms I can agree with most of Willie's last post.  I would mention that Wartburg probably didn't follow the success in football with success in other athletic teams.  I believe you will find success in baseball, wrestling, track & field, cross country and basketball pre-dated the football success.

OK, I've had it with the Wartburg financial aid crap. When the kid was trying to choose schools his final three were Wartburg,Coe, and Central. Yes Wartburg had the best package, but he was ranked #1 in his class with a 4.0 GPA. The funny thing is that Coe almost matched Wartburg dollar for dollar and beloved Central was close. They were all so close that money was not his determining factor in choosing a school. In talking with other parents of current players I've found many similar stories. So either they are all buying players or none are. Remember John 8:7.
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

Willie University

Warthog, I stand corrected  ;)

Footballdaddy, Don't be defensive about it. You just proved my point. Your son's academic credentials were the same when applying to all the schools you mentioned.

Wartburg gave him the best financial aid package out of the 3 you mentioned.

No one said wartburg wasn't a good college or that other factors don't play into the decision.

But, in your son's case, he choose the college that gave him the best financial aid award. Don't you think other kids are doing that as well?

It's simple economics, if 3 colleges are all viewed relatively equal as far as what they "offer", then of course the kid is going to choose the one that is less expensive.

In some cases, wartburg may not be the first choice but because they offer a kid a better financial aid package, the kid and parents probably figure (especially if they are first generation or come from financial struggles) why not choose our 2nd choice school if we can save a few thousand dollars (or more  ;D a year

The above 2 examples are "buying" students to attend.

Now, if another college costs more to attend but has unique offerings (majors, relationship with coach recruiting them, campus improvements, extra-curricular involvements, location, etc..) that the student really wants, well, that may result in them paying MORE to attend that college instead of being "bought" by another college.
