Info on Wartburg's Scholarships

QuoteRegents and Presidential Scholarships $10,000-full tuition
Last year, Wartburg awarded nearly 600 Regents and Presidential Scholarships to first-year students valued at about $12.1 million. Wartburg evaluates merit based scholarships on a combination of a student's high school grade point average, class rank, and ACT/SAT score. Typically, students who have a high school minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 and rank in the top 25 percent of their high school class AND have an ACT composite score of 22 (1140 SAT) or higher will receive a Regents or Presidential Scholarship. Students who qualify and choose to participate in one of Wartburg's Scholarship Days have the opportunity to increase their Regents or Presidential Scholarship. All awards are based on merit and not financial need, are renewable for a maximum of eight terms contingent upon full time enrollment and the maintenance of at least a 2.7 cumulative grade point average.  http://www.wartburg.edu/finaid/scholarships.html

Ah, it's all in the writing.  Awarded does not mean accepted and enrolled.  Great way to sound impressive to prospective students.

They are pretty good at doing that......hence, the D3 Wartburg "Letter of intent".

Apparently its been 3+ months since I posted here, although I have been reading the board every now and then.  As such, here are a few thoughts on some of the topics that have been raised recently:

- Tailgating: Go out and bouy yourselves some of this stuff: http://www.kalmesseasoning.com/  They sell it Hy-Vee stores here in Dubuque, but I don't know about any other locations. Great stuff. Tastes especially good on pork and chicken. Used it on some butterfly chop sandwiches I took up to the Wartburg playoff game in Stevens Point a couple years ago, and as Walston, knightlife06, TheOne89.1, and Warthog can attest, they were pretty damn good.

- Financial aid: Here's a scenario that might make Willy U's head explode: Wartburg was actually the most expensive of the schools I was considering.  It basically came down to Wartburg, UNI, Iowa State, and Wisconsin-Platteville for me.  I got pretty good, but not great, grades in high school, but I was "awarded" a Wartburg Regent Scholarship because I pulled a good ACT score out of my ass.  Wound up paying about $8,000 a year at Wartburg.  Iowa State and UNI were state schools, so while I didn't get as much financial aid, the up-front cost wasn't as great either.  Could have gone to either for about $2,500-3,000 per year.  At UW-P, my grades got me in-state tuition, so I was looking at about five grand a year, if memory serves.  But I went to Wartburg and haven't looked back.  Given that I was one of Iowa's top broadcasting prospects coming out of high school that year, I'm a bit surprised that Wartburg didn't do more to try to "buy" me.

-Conference Expansion: OK, so maybe this hasn't gotten much discussion around here lately, but I say it's time for the Iowa Conference to be proactive and extend an invitation to Iowa State.  It sure looks like they won't be in a BCS conference much longer, so they might as well come on down to Division III so they might be able to have sustained success in sports like football, men's basketball, and baseball.  Oh, wait.

Alright, good talk.  See you guys in September.

I was wondering if any lurking knights would come out and play  ;)

Note: Head did not explode. However, you proved my point even more. You basically went to wartburg tuition free considering 8000 probably was not much more then the cost of room and board  :-X I am sure it would have been free for you but they had to save a little extra for the wrestlers and football players  :D

see you in sept!

Willie U,

All SK's post did is show that he went to Wartburg for a lot less than a full tuition grant, but still paid more than his other choices. I guess it only proves that some only want the best and are willing to pay to go there.

I feel like I have to explain things in more detail. We are not talking about comparing the cost of a STATE school to a private college. The conversation was about how Wartburg tries to "buy" students to attend there versus attending other IIAC schools.....which are PRIVATE and thus, on the same playing field.

Everyone has the choice whether to attend a private, state or community college. He felt the private education was better then his other choices. I would agree, that is why I choose to attend UD versus Iowa. Sure, it is cheaper to attend kirkwood or iowa or isu or UNI in some cases but many factors play into the decision besides cost.

I would venture to say that all IIAC schools are great in different ways.

I'll try to get your minds off politics.

If an IIAC school suddenly had an endowment the size of Grinnell and was able to offer free tuition to all students like Grinnell does.  Would that be buying students?  Of just a case of being a really really nice school?  Would your answer depend on if that school suddenly started winning the all-sports trophy on a regular basis?

Question #2...Who wins the IIAC title this fall?

Question #3...Who wins MVP?

Question #4...Who wins COY?

Question #5...Anyone have any new tailgating recipes I need to know about???
