I doubt Grantland Rice thought it didn't matter who wins or loses - just that there are things that matter more.

I might want Vince Lombardi as my football coach (as far as I know, he wasn't a Pete Carroll), but I doubt I would want him as my spiritual guide! ;)

So as to have complete disclosure, I present Grantland Rice:

For when the One Great Scorer comes
To write against your name,
He marks-not that you won or lost-
But how you played the game.

Vince Lombardi was actually a very devout Catholic. He felt that not doing your utmost to win was cheating your God given talents.
Although being a devout Catholic, I'm sure he made frequent use of the confessional!
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

I was just looking to be the devil's advocate for the sack of argument.
There's many ways to coach and many ways on how to play the game.

I believe in not to just play hard, but in hard play.

To my original question/statement..playing with attitude. I've seen many players and teams win with this type of style.

If you are a coach the One Great Scorer might not mark if you won or lost, but the alumni, the fans, the press, the NCAA, the student body, the Athletic Director, the Hall of Fame, and the Board of Regents do mark wins and losses.

Homecoming games this fall...

Buena Vista - Oct. 9th vs. Wartburg
Central - Oct. 9th vs. Simpson
Coe - Oct. 16th vs. Wartburg
Cornell - Oct. 16th vs. Buena Vista
Dubuque - Oct. 16th vs. Simpson
Loras - ???
Luther - Oct. 9th vs. Cornell
Simpson - Oct. 2nd vs. Luther
Wartburg - Oct. 23rd vs. Dubuque

Simpson and Wartburg get the honor of being homecoming opponants 2 weekends in a row next year on Oct. 9th and Oct. 16th, and will play in homecoming games 3 straight weekends.  With Simpson hosting Luther on Oct. 2nd and Wartburg hosting Dubuque on Oct. 23rd.  Loras, as usual, is a mystery with no game noted as their homecoming game.  The Duhawks do have home games scheduled Oct. 2nd vs. Buena Vista and Oct. 9th vs. Dubuque.

Or, another way to look at homecoming games...

Oct. 2nd   Luther @ Simpson

Oct. 9th   Wartburg @ Buena Vista
Oct. 9th   Simpson @ Central
Oct. 9th   Cornell @ Luther

Oct. 16th Wartburg @ Coe
Oct. 16th Buena Vista @ Cornell
Oct. 16th Simpson @ Dubuque

Oct. 23rd Dubuque @ Wartburg

What???  Nobody scheduled Central for homecoming???  Coach Schipper always liked playing at other team's homecomings because the players' minds were always on other things that week.  Now nobody wants us as their opponent.   :)

I liked that we scheduled Simpson as our Homecoming game -- it's always nice to schedule a sure win when the alumni will be out in full force.  ;) Dubuque thought so, too....

Coe scheduling Wartburg for their Homecoming -- ballsy move. We'll see if it works out....

With the season drawing nearer, what do you think will be the IIAC game of the week for each of the eleven weeks?  Lets be fair and limit your team to three games of the week selections.  Remember the game of the week need not be when the two conference leaders are playing one another, although it certainly could be.
I'm kind of leaning towards Wartburg/Monmouth on week one and Central/Augustana on week two.  That may change as I start looking at things more closely.

Aaron Kampman on Coach Ed Thomas
I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

Did anyone know LC went to Europe to play this spring?

Neat trip, but they apparently didn't go to Wartburg Castle.  I wonder what in the world they were thinking.

A win is a win. Is this true?

The reason I ask this question is because the team that my sons school lost to yesterday had quite a bit of an attitude (before, during and after). They won 27-0 and first place in the tournament.
How to define their attitude? Talking smack, swearing, shoving after the plays…..I think you may get the point.
So is there a difference in a Cal Ripken and a Ty Cobb; A Mike Tyson and a Gentleman Jim? Or is a win a win? Does it really matter how a team gets to that win? If they play with in the rules, does it really matter on how you play the game?
Is winning everything??? :-\

Did that school's name rhyme with Barkos say Leeza?  We played them the week before at the SDSU Tourney.  We beat them on Day 1 and met them again on Day 2 in the Semi's and lost in the last  minutes 27-24.  Rev. 3 caught 2 TD's including a 40 yarder to put us ahead with 4 minutes to play.  They shut up.  Unfortunately our D couldn't hold.

During the game one of their coaches was woofin' and one of ours got going with it.  SDSU coaches had to come and settle things down...we lost about 5 minutes of gametime that would have been nice to have when time ran out with us having the ball 30 yards out.

Anybody else's antivirus sounding off when you get onto the Post Patterns page?

It's now blocked for malicious code when I try to get on from work...and 2 different computer locations at home and inlaws sound off too.

If so let Pat know...   :o
