Pat Coleman

Yep, that would be a factor for both, but it didn't affect my decision because both have to deal with it.

One interesting point:  It appears that both Koors and Zweifel will be breaking in new QB's.

Hansen graduated from Dubuque and, unless I am off my mark, Spud Dick is gone from DePauw.  Both seemed to be outstanding and accurate passers.  Spud Dick completed over 70% of his passes?!?!

Highly unlikely their replacements will duplicate their feats.

How much of a factor does this figure to be?

(That, and I just had to work the name Spud Dick into the conversation)   :D

Twice. Well done. ;)

So are you suggesting the defenses in the IIAC simply let Zweifel do whatever he wants knowing that they can beat the Spartan defense often enough to win the war?  That's how Zweifel puts up the numbers he does.  The rest of the league doesn't scheme to control him.

Not exactly a new concept. Let Jerry Rice get his yards, just don't let John Taylor go off on you too.

Also UD's conference losses were all by large margins. The closest was a 2 TD loss to Central. That would indicate that they were playing catch up and having to rely more on passing. One could argue that with better defense Zweifel could possibly be just another receiver.

Overlooked in this current string is the time spent in the WIAC by Mr. Zweifel

Freshman: 97 rec., 1056 yards, 10.9 ypc   (I believe he set some NCAA records as a freshman)

Sophomore:  79 rec., 974 yards, 12.3 ypc

Totals vs. UW-W (2 games) 18 rec., 252 yards

Take the kid's total body of work into account...his overall productivity and consistency indicates that opposing D3 defenses, regardless of tactics, have not slowed this young man down.  He's as prolific a receiver as D3 has seen in while.

Reflecting on this, my vote goes to Zweifel

Just another receiver who has a shot at finishing his collegiate career with 5000 yards receiving.  :D

So Jerry Rice is an NFL Hall of Famer, while John Taylor is an afterthought in everybody's mind because defenses keyed in on John Taylor and let Jerry Rice get his stats?  Hmm

I would be fine in believing Pat Colemans judgement if Zweifel didn't even get honorable mention.  He knows D3 football.  I just follow the IIAC, and just as a fan.  Where I made some comments is that twice Pat came on here, once last fall after the post season All-American list came out and again this summer after the preseason All-American list came out.  Both times his only comment was basically "Dubuque just throws the ball to Zweifel alot and the other guys have better yards per catch"  I made a sarcastic comment reguarding that and next thing you know Pat is on here saying he normally wouldn't dignify a response but he doesn't want people to actually believe what I was saying.  I'm just a fan of the game.  Pat is the expert on D3 football, I would think he would think people would believe what he has to say over what little me has to say.  And his comments would lead some to take it that he thinks YPC are a big influence with him.

Obviously, many factors go into his decisions.  I would hope pretty much everyone on here would realize there are many factors that go into these teams.  If anything, it's a good thing there are fans on here posting away and arguing over who belongs and who doesn't belong.  More hits on here means Pat makes more money.  That is a good thing.

I hope in the future, Dubuque can recruit a kid with a name as great as Spud Dick ;D

Here is a video featuring Colton Hansen.  In it, you can see many of Zweifels receptions.  Zweifel won't win a lot of foot races, he doesn't look overly physically intimidating, he just catches what is thrown at him.

PH should look at that video and imagine a 3rd year starting QB in Wyatt Hanus throwing the ball all over the field to Heys Rev. 3 in his freshman year in Dubuque ;D

doolittle: You would be surprised to learn that people actually come to the board and believe everything they read, even if it's from biased fans. Every once in a while I have to set the record straight.

Dolittle, you are completely missing my point. If a defense commits to shutting Jerry Rice down, he'll stilll get his catches, while John Taylor is running free and killing you on the other side. The same could probably be said of Zweifel. In looking at his conference stats and it seems that if you take away his longest catch of the game his avarge completion is in the 7-9 yard range which probably means quick outs and the like. Those are hard to stop if run properly, but there's not a lot of YAC if defended properly. Obviously, if you commit to stopping those kinds of passes you leave holes in the rest of your defense which allows someone else to step up and hurt you.

Of course, I expect you already knew that and you were just being the sarcastic cuss you are  ;)

You might be on to something ;D

But, I do think Kid Zweifel should get a bit of credit.  I don't think you can just plug any joe average into the WR slot at UD and that kid ends up with 100 receptions on the season.

On a side note, you can tell the football season is getting close.  I found my wife looking at the UD schedule and trying to figure out a new game we can go to now that the Rockford game won't work out for us.  She has somehow turned into a fan over the last 10+ years.

i hope the spartan camp is more interested in wins than individual player accomplishments. . .
Why the defense ain't werkin'?

It may seem that way but the actual numbers don't bare that out in 5 of 8 conference games.

Taking away his longest reception his average vs...
BV....13.9 yards/reception
Luther....15.4 yards/reception
Wartburg....12.7 yards/reception
Simpson....14.9 yards/reception
Loras....7.3 yard/reception
Coe....3.6 yards/reception
Cornell....7.8 yards/reception
Central....11.8 yards/reception

Really??? Even though it kills me to say this, but I'll take the two boys out of Mount Union (Shorts and Garcon) over Zweifel. Zweifel will finish with some amazing stats when his career is all said and done, but Shorts and Garcon are on a different level..faster and more athletic.
