I tip my "half full" beer glass in a toast to your typical Spartan optimism ;D

With our history, we have to be optimists!!!

I just can't make myself predict a conference finish yet.  But, I will predict my Spartans will finish 6-4 or better this season.

Ok, maybe I can come up with an almost conference prediction.

Central finishes 1st at 8-0

Whoever wins between Coe and Wartburg, will then end up losing to either BVU, UD, or Luther and both will go 6-2 in conference play.

Whoever wins against Coe/Wartburg amongst BVU, UD and Luther will end up 4th at 5-3 because that team will also lose 1 between BVU, UD and Luther.

2 of the teams between BVU, UD and Luther will go 4-4.

Cornell, Loras, and Simpson will round out the IIAC.  I'll just go and say Cornell in 7th, because they are closest of these schools to my home.  Simpson in 8th because I grew up Methodist.  Loras in 9th because I went to UD and we don't like the Duhawks ;)

I don't know if al this is possible from a win/loss perspective but I will go with it :P

Actually, I'm not for having 170 kids in camp.  For the reasons you mentioned.  But, I will get Coach Z the benefit of the doubt.  He appears to have a good thing going at UD.

Of course, didn't we have a discussion like this last year about McMartin only wanting to bring in 40 or so freshmen per year but Central had 50+ freshmen starting camp last year???

I think there are always an optimum number of recruits.  You are right that we talked about this and we talked about what I am about to post.  Here in D3 its hard to know who is coming and who is not and when you start recruiting you may recruit a 100 kids and if you do a good job and get half of the kids then you wind up with 50.  So it is hard to know who you will get to come and who will find their way to other schools or just not play and go to a state school.  If you look at most rosters there will be about 15-25 seniors finish playing at a given school so if you start with 50 and lose half you might wind up with 25.  I dont see schools getting more than 25 seniors most years.

Were I a D3 coach I'd keep recruiting and welcoming kids to campus right up until the day classes start.  In fact I'd welcome transfers from D2 and D1 programs all year long.  If you have coaches, trainers, facilities and equipment for 150, why not use them?

Of course some (most) of the new recruits won't have a full four year football career.  So what?  None of those 60 or 70 who show up for the first day of practice their freshman year are going to play more than four years anyway.  Some will be done after one day, one month, one year, two years, three years or some will last all four years.  All D3 players should arrive on campus with a college degree as their main objective.  So what if 70 young men give football a shot their first year?  At least they've tried.  Its better than going to a state D1 school and doing nothing other than having a near orgasm if one of the members of the football team is in your 400 person English 101 course.

Because UD starts the season 2 days earlier than the other IIAC schools, does that mean they also can start practice 2 days earlier?

I'm sure Dutchie could have only seen Cheers in reruns. I'm sure it's her only reference to bar life since she's a Central grad! ;D ;D ;D

Cheers is a great show -- I have all 11 seasons on DVD, and remember watching the finale live, thank you.  ;D

I can down beers with the best of them -- including you, footballdaddy.

Central has done a nice job upgrading its web site.  The 2010 football media guide is there also.  Is it football season yet?  http://www.central.edu/athletics/

I'm not much of a rum girl unless I am sitting on a beach somewhere. I prefer whiskey. But I'll make an exception for you. ;)

Im pretty sure, its a set number of days/practices before the first contest, so if your first game is earlier they should be practicing earlier.

Well if it takes a beach to do it, I'll guess I can handle that!  :D

Rum, Gin, Scotch, Whisky, Bourbon, Beer...it's all good for me...especially if you include wings and other assorted meats.  And speaking of alcohol...this morning I noticed the building across the street from my office had sold.  I asked my boss about it and she told me a BREWERY is going to open up in there.  Less than a month until opening kickoff and there is also a brewery opening up across the street from where I work...life is good ;D ;D ;D
