W'loo CF Courier report on Luther media day.

Luther focused on improving offense

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

Dubuque Spartan 2010 roster is up.

If I am counting correctly...and I am probably not!!!

The UD roster lists 138 players.

12 - Seniors
9   - Juniors
35 - Sophomores
82 - Freshmen :o

Freshman count I come up with is...
33 - Illinois
23 - Wisconsin
12 - Iowa
3   - Alaska
3   - Puerto Rico
2   - Alabama
1   - Florida
1   - Ontario
1   - California
1   - Nevada
1   - Kentucky
1   - Netherlands

Is there a new rule that allows players to wear a three digit number on their uniform?

During practices, they duplicate numbers.

During games they are limited to less than 100 (70?) players.

Why, were you hoping for an opponent to wear 666? ;D

I for one would love to wear 666.  But then, I always was a little anti-establishment.

Home teams can dress as many players as they want.  The only restriction I know of is traveling teams.

Who has practice jerseys with 3 digit numbers printed on them? I seriously doubt they're going to embarrass someone by doing that. That would be a pretty sick thing to do, IMO.

They don't use 3 digit practice jerseys. I have looked at the roster a couple times and noticed some players starting to get duplicate numbers which tells me they aren't done updating the roster and just listed all the players and will assign numbers to the duplicates in good time......  ;)

Better then just having a jersey with a RED X on it!!  ;D

You're right.  Bur even those that dress over 100 players use duplicate numbers rather than 3-digit numbers, as far as I've ever seen.

As someone who covers high school football here in Iowa, I have to say that I recognized a lot more names on the Coe roster than on Luther's or UD's.  Not that high school success has any bearing on achievement at the college level.  Some of that may be due to geography, too.

That said, Coe's Logan Keenher, Gage Mohs, and Colin O'Connor were very impressive high school players the times I saw them.  I'd be surprised if O'Connor isn't an All-IIAC wide-out by the time his career's over.

As more rosters are posted, it should be interesting to see how many other familiar names show up.  I know Wartburg is getting one of Hempstead's better players from last year who played a role in the recent Shrine Bowl victory.

So what is the big rush to get rosters posted?  There is always a few kids who leave after a couple days.  Why not wait until that fallout is complete and post the roster of those who survived the first week or so?

With all this technology at our fingertips these days we expect instant gratification.  The first school that gets their info out first must be doing the best job.  Much different than the old days when if you wanted to see your teams roster you went to the first home game and bought a program for 2 bucks.

It's also easy to keep changing your roster as kids drop out.  Keeps the work study kids busy!!!  It's just nice to get an early heads up on recruiting and also figure out who came back and what not.  Heck, I wouldn't even mind a daily 5 minute coaches show put up on youtube where he answers soft ball questions lobbed to him by the school SID ;D ;D ;D  Any way to get your schools name out there and in the minds of the general public is a good thing.

I don't know how many IIAC players have ever come from the Netherlands, but I can't remember Central ever getting one.  I'm guessing this guy thought he was signing up for the soccer team.

Does this mean UD will start allowing vuvuzelas at their football games?

Yes, but only when the other team is lining up for a potential game winning field goal in triple OT ;)

I am not sure the point of your post other then to point out the obvious. Since you cover iowa high school sports, of course you wouldn't recognize any but possibly 12-15 Iowa freshman on the roster. Most of the freshman are from Illinios and Wisconsin. Remember, we live on the border of 3 states. Same for Luther, they border minnesota and wisconsin. If you did more research, I am sure you will find those same types of all state kids from Wisconsin and Illinios as you mention for Coe and Wartburg.

Regardless, pretty impressive to see the drastic change in recruiting and the overwhelming interest from local talent. Of course Iowa is a tough cookie to crack because of limited population of talent and an abundance of colleges attacking the same recruiting pool but this year was an improvement over last and I am sure it will continue to improve in the years to come....

I have to agree with Willie U on this one.  When you go fishing you toss your line where the fish are.

At Dubuque and Loras that means Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa.
At Luther that means Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

It seems like a simple concept to me.
