One of things I have admired about McMartin, and one of things that seems to me to be a real measure of a good head coach is that his teams do a pretty good job of starting the season "clicking on all cylinders."  I hope he can keep it up against Oshkosh.
True.  It also shows a great deal of dedication to summer weight lifting by the team to be ready to start practicing on all cylinders.

I am just glad we play UD in Pella, less chances of triple OT playing here.   ;)

True, but, the last UD/Central game in Pella you had Central hit a 45 yard FG with less than a minute left to win by 3 points over the Spartans.  So either way, I think we might have a good game between our two schools this year...at least I hope so ;)

Football season isn't even over yet, and already Wartburg's roster has been removed from its Web site. I find this curious since rosters for other fall sports remain. Regardless, I took the liberty of downloading the roster before it was removed. Any football recruits wondering where they might stack up on the Knight roster can look here:

I wanted to thank you for posting this -- I needed to check something for Kickoff and this is the only publicly available Wartburg roster.

I think you and footballdaddy are "brothers from other mothas"

Do you guys call each other before games and make sure you each wear matching orange outfits  ???

I don't care who you are....that's funny.

Central is looking pretty strong on paper this year with lots of returners and a couple of very gifted guys that were eligible to return for a 5th season.  We do need to find a replacement at running back, but know that we have some talented returners just aching for their chance to strut their stuff.  Plus, we have a very talented local freshmen who could follow in the footsteps of Vance Schuring, or going back further, Scott De Jong who ranked among top rushers.

It will be another exciting year and some tough non-conference foes to kick things off.

On paper, it doesn't look like anyone will give central a run for their money. A ton of returning starters, the most all conference players, etc...

Thank God football is not played on paper. I just hope we get central before they really start clicking on all cylinders.

Willie U

Paper?  If you look at who is coming back, I believe Coe has just as much talent coming back as Central does.  Realistically, and this is speaking right now, the IIAC title should be decided Sept. 25 in Cedar Rapids.

I find it laughable that you say "EVEN wartburg has open practices". That makes you sound like you have a false belief that wartburg is better then other conference schools. You are the voice that makes conference teams hate wartburg. Just remember, you finished 1 place higher last year my friend and coe and central own you right now. And other colleges are catching up........ :o

and PS- Your head coach is looking for a job EVERY season and you buy student athletes to attend there  ;)  ;D

Willie U

Wow, that is quite a bit of dislike for my Knights.

I assume you are referring to last year when Wartburg lost to both Coe & Central.  This isn't a long term trend since the Knights beat them both in 2008. The 2009 victory was Coe's first in seven seasons. 11 year record for Wartburg versus Central & Coe: Central 6-5 and Coe 8-3.

When you have a good coach, good teams come looking for him.  Thankfully he has stayed with the Knights.

That seems to be much easier than hiring a coach to get his son.

I just noticed the "W" on the Wartburg football field looks like the mountains on a bottle of Coors Light when you are sitting on the vistor side of Walston-Hoover.  Perhaps that is a sign from above that tailgating is about to begin.

An unsolicited endorsement for "Kickoff"

"Kickoff" is truly a must read for fans of D3 football.  Pat and his team do a good job of covering all regions and conferences.  This site can't be an overly profitable venture, so supporting it through purchasing the 2010 edition of "Kickoff" is a very inexpensive way of helping keep this venue open for our enjoyment.

Willie U made the point earlier that others are catching up with Wartburg.  He may have a point there.  The Knights haven't won a league championship since two years ago.  I checked to see how the Knights have done over the past 11 years (That is what you can find on D3 Football)

In the eleven years Wartburg's conference finishes have been:
1st - 5 times (most recent 2008)
2nd -4 times (most recent 2007)
3rd - 2 times (most recent 2009)

The Knights' eleven year record against current conference foes is 73-15:
Central 6-5
Buena Vista 8-3
Coe 8-3
Cornell 10-1
Dubuque 10-1
Loras 10-1
Luther 10-1
Simpson 11-0

Buena Vista has the current longest win streak against Wartburg, 2 games.  If anyone has the Knights number I would say it was the Beavers.

Willie,
You don't know the joy I feel knowing I'm what you live for.

BTW it's the Bobbsey twins.

So yesterday on my drive home, the KRNA dj "the shark" mentioned he had played football for the UD Spartans.  And it got me thinking...Has Willie U ever posted on here between 3-7pm???  Hmm ;D

Two weeks until kickoff for 8 of the 9 IIAC teams...12 days until kickoff for UD.  Thursday will be the 1st of 5 night games for UD this fall.

footballdaddy

Perhaps UD has so many night games due to having several JV games on Saturday afternoon.
