Central is looking pretty strong on paper this year with lots of returners and a couple of very gifted guys that were eligible to return for a 5th season.  We do need to find a replacement at running back, but know that we have some talented returners just aching for their chance to strut their stuff.  Plus, we have a very talented local freshmen who could follow in the footsteps of Vance Schuring, or going back further, Scott De Jong who ranked among top rushers.

It will be another exciting year and some tough non-conference foes to kick things off.

On paper, it doesn't look like anyone will give central a run for their money. A ton of returning starters, the most all conference players, etc...

Thank God football is not played on paper. I just hope we get central before they really start clicking on all cylinders.

Willie U

Paper?  If you look at who is coming back, I believe Coe has just as much talent coming back as Central does.  Realistically, and this is speaking right now, the IIAC title should be decided Sept. 25 in Cedar Rapids.

While I agree with you on the game Sept 25 most likely deciding the Championship. I think its a bit of a stretch to say that Coe has as much talent coming back as the Dutch. Central returns 11 All IIAC players, while by my count from the IIAC website, Coe had 6 underclassmen All Conference players. That seems to be a gap in talent.

Not that it means much, but that is on paper.

"Kickoff" is truly a must read for fans of D3 football.  Pat and his team do a good job of covering all regions and conferences.  This site can't be an overly profitable venture, so supporting it through purchasing the 2010 edition of "Kickoff" is a very inexpensive way of helping keep this venue open for our enjoyment.

I agree that Kickoff is an amazing piece of work overall, and well worth the price for a true D3 fan.  But the IIAC capsules for the past couple of years have been relatively poor compared to other conferences.  I am especially looking forward to this years' edition since Pat revealed that he would be handling the IIAC.

Willie:  You can talk smack all you want.  Back in my days at Wartburg, Luther would regularly beat the Wartburg football team like a red haired step-child.  That never kept us from talking smack to the Norse or attempting to perpetrate some sort of minor vandalism around the Luther campus.  So keep it up, the worm will turn some day.  When it does you will know you not only were on the band wagon early, but you are driving the damned thing.

For those interested, the UW-La Crosse football team will visit Luther College Aug. 24 for a combined practice/scrimmage (scroll down). The teams are scheduled to practice/scrimmage from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. My guess is it's open to the public. UWL was picked for 5th in the pre-season WIAC S.I.D. poll.

As far as the Rams go...I'm driving, I own the wagon, and I feed the horses pulling the darn thing.

So yesterday on my drive home, the KRNA dj "the shark" mentioned he had played football for the UD Spartans.  And it got me thinking...Has Willie U ever posted on here between 3-7pm???  Hmm ;D

Two weeks until kickoff for 8 of the 9 IIAC teams...12 days until kickoff for UD.  Thursday will be the 1st of 5 night games for UD this fall.

I know the Shark, All conference punter from Dubuque Senior High School. Greg Scharnau (sp?). Not me though but I played with him for a year or 2, can't remember  ??? Great guy.

Ah ha, Greg has been with KRNA for quite awhile, I just didn't know he was going by "the shark" now.  There was a Keith Sharnau from my frat that graduated a year or two before I got to UD and also a professor Sharnau that I always wondered if they all were related.

11 more days until kickoff

Shark was his nickname when he played also and yes, his dad was professor sharnau.

That will teach me to actually work during the day >:(

So basically, BV and Luther switched places from how they finished the season before...other than that, it's just a carbon copy of last years final standings.  Probably a pretty fair preseason prognostication.

Last year Dubuque went 5-5.  4 of those wins were on the road.  I don't think too many people would be shocked to see Dubuque beat Rockford, Cornell, Simpson, and BV at home this season.  The Spartans 1 home victory last year was against Luther.  I could understand Luther maybe being favored over UD this year, but not surprised to see a Spartan victory over the Norse in Decorah.  Last year Dubuque lost an early season game to UW-Platteville by 8 points at home.  I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to think UD might be able to get a win at Platteville this year.  Loras took UD to the woodshed last year at UD.  But then went on to lose to Cornell and finish 2-6 in the IIAC.  I think UD could get a win there.  That would get UD to a 7-3 overall record and 5-3 in conference play and probably put the Spartans in 4th place...just like the preseason poll suggests ;D

That would be a great year for UD fans...for Central, Coe, and Wartburg it would be a year of dissapointment ;)

In my Spartan blue tinted glasses...UD/Central the last 3 years you have UD down 6 in the 4th quarter last year and twice with 1st and goal inside the 5 yard line and no points before Central tacks on a late insurance TD to win by 14.  The year before Central hit a 45 yard FG with a minute left to win by 3.  The year before that in Dubuque the game went to 3OT's before Central pulled out a 3 point victory.  This COULD be the year!!!

The last 2 trips UD made to Waverly have resulted in OT games.  UD winning one and Wartburg winning one.  It would be nice to see another hard fought game between the two schools.

Coe...well UD does have 2 victories over the Kohawks in the last 6 years...but yeah, nothing much to talk about there.

This season has potential.
