I'm having a great time reading the 2010 Kickoff.  A nice feature this year is being able to look at past years editions.

Interesting comments regarding the IIAC.  Anxious for the season to start now and see if some of their predictions come true!!!

Glad you're enjoying it. All that time spent is only worth it to us if you do.

I looking at the Wartburg roster, I see the Knights went outside the confines of the state for several of the new Knights.

I know where he was last year.

I love a good mystery.

August 26, 2009 - Saginaw Valley State will be starting the season with a new starting quarterback.  Chuck Dowdell, a junior transfer from Indiana State, will take over under center for the Cardinals when they open their season Thursday at California (Pa.). Dowdell and last year's starter Dan Stiefel battled for the starting job throughout training camp. Dowdell was informed that he would be the starting quarterback by second-year head coach Jim Collins late last week.  Stiefel left the team shortly after the decision was made, an SVSU spokesman said. Stiefel started all 10 games last year and threw for 2,113 yards and 14 touchdowns.

September 21, 2009 - Former Saginaw Valley State quarterback Dan Stiefel left the Cardinals last month and is enrolled at Grand Valley State. He plans to walk on to the football team.  Stiefel, who was listed by SVSU as a junior from Emmett, was the starter last year for the Cardinals but was beaten out for the job in fall camp by Charles Dowdell. Steifel, who threw for 2,113 yards and 14 touchdowns as a starter in 2008, was on the GVSU sideline during Saturday night's game.

The only thing I wasn't able to dig up was why he didn't play last year? Maybe he had to sit out a year as far as transfer rules? Not sure, but I assume he has 2 years eligibility left.
One possible reason could be academic probation the prior year changed to dismissal after another bad semester.  Or academic dismissal, sit out a year, and decide to start over somewhere new.  Not saying that is the case, it could just as well have been an injury, then seeing the writing on the wall.  But if he wasn't even listed on the roster the prior year and is a great athlete... ??? ??? ???

Or maybe he was on double secret probation from Dean Wormer.

Or maybe NCAA regulations regarding scholarship athletes transferring.

I know Pat wants us to talk about Kickoff topics on the Kickoff site.  I don't have authority issues or anything but if I have to have one more user name and password my head will explode.  So without giving away too much to you cheapskates who didn't buy Kickoff, the Central preview talks about guys having "good off-seasons."  What would everybody say makes for a good off-season?  Even though I don't know what makes a good one, I'm pretty sure mine sucked.

I'm sure most would agree that a "good off-season" would include progress in the weight room, good spring practice, and a significant number of players staying in the area to lift and practice on their own during the summer.

Coach Anderson (strength coach at Central) has been great about keeping a huge core of guys around Pella to work out together during the summer. He is there every day and all of the workouts are personally designed for each individual. He also makes dietary reviews and recommendations on a personal basis to every athlete. He is a tremendous asset to the program and I hope he is never lured away by a bigger school!!

Completely concur...nice job on Kickoff this year Pat and Co.  Nice to see the IIAC capsules given well researched treatment.

I count 3 qb's on the roster.  The returning starter is a sophomore and 5'9...the other 2 are freshmen and both are 5'7 :o :o :o

That's why these boys are playing at the D3 level...c'mon Double D.

It's the size of the fight in the dog... ;)

The hard part is players finding summer jobs that allow them to stay in the area. Maybe Central has a good work study program.
