They snowplowed the field before the 05 playoff game against UWW...that was a cold one!

High school games are threatened by heat today (111 degrees). Some of last years games were started an hour later. This year they're thinking of rescheduling.
I played ball in the mid west. I remember some very bitter cold days when the wind chill was in the negatives. I did a search on canceled football games. There were games canceled due to lightning and hurricane warnings, but I didn't find any on the cold.
Does anyone recall any games canceled due to the cold?? If not, wouldn't the cold be considered the same danger to the players as the heat?  8-)

I remember freezing through several games, many of them playoffs.  I have sat in the snow at games many times.  The unfortunate Bethel ice storm game and a game at Concordia in Moorehead, MN that were particularly cold.  Central had a game moved to ISU once because of snow, don't remember if they had to push it back a day or not.

Reality Check for the DBQ:  It was Rockford.

2 years ago, I remember attending opening night at Chipotle Stadium when the DBQ ran roughshod over an equally overmatched Rockford side.  Cut to Week 2, and Spartie found themselves on the other end of a whomping at the hands of Redlands.  So much for Week 1.

Not saying that will happen here, but Rockford is not the test by which we can truly evaluate the DBQ.

On the positive side, they won in the way they needed to and take away identified opportunities for improvement.

Rev.3 straps it on tonight.  He's on the 2 deep behind a kid that is ranked as the #5 or #6 CB in the country.  The kid is a heckuva receiver too as you might  imagine.  Rev. 3 looks to get his reps, though, as the other kid is a 2-way and will need to take a breather.  Rev. 3 is also in when we put in the spread.

The cooler thing is that Jr. is back home and has been invited to coach the TE's.  So both of them will be on the sideline together this season.   :)

He beat me to it...I watched the game and although the production was very good, with the multiple cameras and replay, the glare off the wet turf made it somewhat tough on my old eyes and the announcers made it tough on my old ears.  ;)  Anyway, I, too, wondered if the "positive" results were skewed due to the very weak competition. I go back to the TD catch and run by Hookstead -- no way he should've scored. The Rockford DB who ended up being the final line of defense looked like he was doing all he could to avoid contact. The DBQ player escorting Hookstead into the endzone never had to block him because it appeared he simply backed off -- not a very good play. And what's with DBQ's late 4th quarter passing, including the last one into the endzone that was badly underthrown for an INT right at the end? Why not just run out the clock? A win is a win, but, as Purple Heys indicated, I wouldn't get too carried away just yet.

The only good thing that comes from Decorah is lefsa.  And maybe T-Bock's (their food is delicious).  And I suppose I can give hats off to The Corner Bar since they would never I.D. me the summer I worked at Wal-Mart.
You lost all credibility when you didn't mention Mabe's Pizza.  I have neighbors w/ family in Decorah and they will periodically bring us a half-baked Mabe's Pizza....GREAT STUFF!

I said the only "good" things to come from Decorah.  Mabe's is GREAT!

(the last time I saw an o-lineman back pedal this quickly was when Vince King was across the line from him)

AEN will be disappointed in me as I was his Mabe's supplier during my 4 years at Wartburg.  To make up for this I will have to drive to Decorah this weekend and get me a large half-baked original with mushrooms and extra cheese.

You must have skipped the line in my post that said, I REALIZE IT IS ROCKFORD and need to TEMPER MY EXCITEMENT. I think the others did as well........ WE ALL REALIZE the competition was not what we are going to face the rest of the season.

However, there were still many positives to the game. And most importantly, I wouldn't even compare this team to the one 2 years ago that handily beat rockford and went on to go 2-8. There is no comparison. NONE, ZILTCH.

BoBo......I also saw what you saw with that DB firsthand at the endzone he scored on. I got a good chuckle out of it. I am sure his coaches will not when they review film  ;D

PS- Coach Z played 3!!, Yes, that is right 3 back up QB's in the 4th QTR. 2 of which were freshman. All of the reserves were in the game. If he wanted to run up the score, it would have been 70-7. And remember, 1 TD and 1 near TD got called back because of penalties earlier in the 3rd qtr.

I don't think we should criticize a well played game in every facet or discount a non-conference win. We are all on the same page and I can't wait to play the Pioneers. The Spartans stacked up very well in their scrimmage against Osh Kosh so I am not worried. If they eliminate some more mental mistakes, I believe they can play with anyone.

IMO, that was like a microcosm of the entire game Rockford brought.

Platteville will be night to Rockford's day...the Pioneers play their best ball in non-conference games!!  ;)

WOW, not much love for the Knights in the W'loo Courier. 3rd billing after UIU + Luther in Small College weekend games preview. ???

"Dan Stiefel, a junior from Sterling Heights, Mich., has won a three-way battle to replace record-setting Nick Yordi at quarterback over Mike Sosnowski, a senior from Eldridge and Ryan Wurtz, a sophomore from Milford. Stiefel started his career at Division II Saginaw Valley State, where he passed for 2,113 yards and 14 touchdowns as a freshman. He transferred to Grand Valley State last year where three former Wartburg coaches reside - Jack Ginn, Erik Koehler and Tim Morrison. ... Wartburg has won 12 consecutive and 16 of its last 17 home openers at Walston-Hoover Stadium."

What schools have video for their games this weekend?

I'm a free agent since UD has already played.  I would like to see some more IIAC football.

I know that, but rather than accept the philosphy that "it is always darkest before it is pitch-black" ... I'm taking a brighter approach to Spartan football.

Many years ago I went to the air show in Oshkosh.  For a long list of reasons that I won't recount here, it was one of the worst days of my life.  It will be karmic justice if Central can beat UWOshkosh soundly and get the starters off of the field early and healthy and in good shape for the rest of the season.
