MWC board reports Monmouth quarterback, Tanney, maybe gone for the season.  Grinnell pulls the upset and beats a Tanneyless Fighting Scots team.  Tanney took a real beating last week at Wartburg, but I figured playing Grinnell this week would be the closest they could get to an off week for him to recuperate.  I hope the comments he is done for the year prove to be more rumor than fact.  It would be a shame for a pre-season All-American go down five quarters into the season.

We got back late from visiting the grandchildren in Waterloo, so we didn't make it across the river to watch Central/Augustana.  Here's hoping the Dutch pull it out.

The only good thing about that is that he may get a redshirt as it is the second game.  If it was next week that would be a real shame.  He would be done.

Can his parents afford another year of school?

Just an exercise in case there's anyone on this board other than Purple Heys who believes his statement: "the editorial perspective of D3Football.com slants more toward the programs, e.g. UW-W and MUC, that aren't in that category."

Here are the teams pictured on the front page of D3football.com last week, and their preseason Kickoff ranking. Objective people can tell us where the slant is.

Delaware Valley: No. 10
Willamette: No. 18
Wartburg: No. 60
Hampden-Sydney: No. 65
Howard Payne: No. 141
Puget Sound: No. 162
SUNY-Maritime: No. 194
St. Scholastica: No. 205

Other teams were in the images but these were the teams featured. In addition, Keith McMillan went to see four teams play this weekend, the highest ranked being No. 147 Merchant Marine.

So no, we didn't go see, say, Cornell play Macalester this weekend, but our editorial perspective is just fine. To assume otherwise is just plain inaccurate, and I believe I have shown this objectively.

BV site says Beavers win.  Good.

Good - The D3 scoreboard has it as a BV loss.  I'm glad that was incorrect info.

Just got home from the UD-Platteville game an hour ago and will catergorize this game one way: Missed opportunities. I am unhappy with the loss as I am sure every coach, player and fan are but I know there isn't a single person that doesn't believe we should  have won that game. Having said that, I think it is going to make the Spartans hungrier.

Hats off to platteville for fighting back (although I wish someone would post the deflected TD reception on youtube because there is no way his feet were in bounds  >:( ) Regardless, we had other opportunities and didn't capitalize.

One thing is for sure, in my opinion, this is a better overall team then last year.

Go Spartans!!!

Don't worry about it Pat.  You will never please everybody all the time.  Way too many people have short memories about D3 football.  Until you and your site came along we had no place to share our enthusiasm for the teams we follow.
From a personal point of view, I find you to be fair and relatively well balanced in your coverage.  I know you get upset with me about every three years when I get on my high horse and suggest WIAC universities should grow some gonads and move up a division or two.  On that you and I disagree. Truth is we will never come to common ground as to whether a campus of 10,000 students has a built in advantage over smaller colleges.  We'll just both have to bask in the knowledge that we're right and the other guy is wrong.

How about a picture? As John Madden always says, one knee equals two feet. http://www.uwplatt.edu/athletics/football/2010/dubuque2/pages/091110199.html

Charlie Kohawk

I feel left out. Glad to have the exhibition season behind us. Time for Kohawk horses to get healthy. Competition level increases dramatically this week.
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Thanks for the pic UWP SID, though that angle doesn't really show us too much.  We'll just have to assume the refs got the call correctly.  I was listening in on the Platteville broadcast and was impressed with their fairness.  You often get blatant homerism at the D3 level but those two made a point that they weren't sure he got his feet in and would love to be able to see a replay.  I think it even slanted towards they weren't sure how he could have got his feet in.  I thought they did a good job describing the action to the listeners.

DutchHawk, glad to bump you up to 100 on the karma scale.  Congratulations!

What I minute I bumped DH up to 100 K this morning too, somebody is dissin' our man here!  The wrath of all our non-creatively Dutch named supporters will be upon you!   >:(

Ok, finally time to get to business in conference play, a little re-cap, the IIAC is 10-8 in Non-Con play.  About where we've always been, by conference we are:

3-0 vs NAIA  (Peru, Olivet, IWC)  vs Coe 2x and BV
2-0 vs NAC (Rockford 2x) vs DBQ and Loras
1-0 vs UMAC (Northwestern) vs Luther
1-0 vs MWC (Monmouth) vs Wartburg
1-2 vs CCIW (Augie, Elmhurst, North C.) vs Central, Loras and Cornell
1-2 vs WIAC (Osh Kosh, Platteville 2x) vs BV and DBQ
1-3 vs MIAC (Gustavus, Bethel, St Olaf 2x) vs Simpson 2x, Luther and Wartburg
0-1 vs independent (Macalaster is in the  MIAC but does not play a MIAC schedule in FB???) vs Cornell

I don't think the conference helped itself in the grand scheme of conference strength and therefore potential Pool C bids.  Luckily we've had our share of Pool C qualifiers, but I don' think we can complain too much, especially since Pool C opportunities have gotten smaller.  You all can create your own opinions about scheduling WIAC or CCIW or MIAC games, personally I'm all for it, especially if you think you're contending for a playoff run.
