Aaron Kampman on Coach Ed Thomas
I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

It's official, AZ Dutchman, if the team is talking playoffs and championships, so can we!   ;D ;D ;D

It is a well timed recruiting story if you ask me.  Seniors are thinking about where to go next year and why not put the idea out there of keeping some of the best players on the HS team together to continue the fun in college.  Very good move if you ask for me very prejudiced opinion.  Or even if you don't.   :D :D :D

It is a very interesting story and Jake Viggers was certainly one of our best recruiters that year, but it had to be because he was having a good time.  He scored the winning FG in triple OT at UD, then the team went to the playoffs and it had to bring back those same old feelings.  Wish those Valley and Dowling kids would see the opportunities a small school like Central could offer them.  Always happy to continue taking the Rams kids too.

For what it's worth, there is some precedent for Saturday's matchup of top 10 Iowa Conference teams. In 1998, Coe's first year as a member of the conference, the Kohawks were ranked 9th in the USA Football Division III poll after knocking off #1 Simpson. #3 Central prevailed 39-14 and Coe lost 4 of its next 5 games to finish 5-5. That game was also held at Clark Field, and there was no chat board whining about the seating.  ;D
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Is it too much to ask that we have visitor side heated individual seats, a covered stand, and wait staff to bring us food and drinks at our seat???  ;)

I can't comment on Cornell's performance vs Wartburg but I will say something about the weight room comment. The couple of times that I made it to Mount Vernon this past Spring, I saw a large group of football players working out with the strength coach. They might have some small guys but they have some big boys as well. Most of those players have worked hard to improve their strength and conditioning. I talked with Coach B this summer and he commented on the improved strength he saw after Coach Frey was hired on at Cornell. One thing he didn't see was much improvement in foot speed. That's something that he wanted to change in their workouts.

Cornell's student population (and football team) reflects a whole lot less local kids compared to most other IIAC.  Some kids do elect to go home for the Summer.  A lot larger number stays than is assumed however and CaliRam is correct, Cornell has some large kids (Our biggest is 6'7" 310 - that's down from a soft 325 last year).  They have several smaller newcomers but if they take advantage, Coach Frey will develop them.

I need cite only one example...Heys Jr. entered school at 195 lbs. as a freshman, he was 235 as a soph., 245 as a junior, 255 as a senior.  He stayed his Summers there and I know they had a large contingent this past Summer.  I'd like to think that last year's seniors set that example and that this year's senior pass that along.

IMO, Week #4 Games of the Week should include:
#5 Mary Hardin Baylor v. #9 Hardin-Simmons
#7 Central v. #10 Coe
#14 North Central v. #20 UW-Eau Claire

Were I a betting person, I might take the lower ranked team in all three games.

Were I a betting person I would fade ya on the top two but not the 14 v 20.

I don't think so.  Central has a visitor side, the seats are heated early in the season and chilled lated in the season.  At times, we even provide free showers and electricity.   ;D  The wait staff is marvelous, you can wait as long as you want for food and drinks to be brought to your seat.    On the home side, you may be treated to the occassional Big Red gum and lots of tight ends for DF1's viewing pleasure.  Where is she anyway?

Coach Frey is a valuable asset, he comes from the Central strength and conditioning program after all ;)

In 1998, I was down on the sidelines, and it was annoying cheering in front of people seated in bag chairs. Really? Must we take up a donation to provide visitors bleachers? Is that too much to ask? I would bet that in one season the visitor's admission would pay for the cost, and after word got out that you'd rolled out the red carpet for visiting fans, you might see what the rest of the conference is talking about when we say that our team "travels well."

Mmm -- tight ends. :)

I've been working too much to contribute to the conversation...man, it sucks getting old. ;)

I don't think bag chairs were invented yet either.

Come on, you know what I'm driving at -- It's always been BYOLC (Bring Your Own Lawn Chair) when we travel over to Coe.

If I were running the conference, I would say that you couldn't host games if you didn't provide seating for both sets of fans....I bet if Coe had to play every game on the road for a season or two, they would take care of the situation. :)

Aren't you guys glad I'm back? ;)

I'm just glad Dutchie's taking it out on Coe instead of Wartburg. ;)
