Congrats to Coe on the W Saturday. You guys have a good team, now go out and take care of business the rest of the year, we will do the same and both be playing late into the season.

I agree with Old Dutch, game changing point was that long touchdown pass that the Coe defender made a heads up play on. I was really really really dissapointed with Centrals lack of tackling ability. I would have liked to see some more 5 6 man bitzes with a bit of press man coverage. The deep ball didnt beat us but the short stuff sure did!

Boyle is a solid QB, in a well designed system.

Central need to get back on their feet and take care of business. I have complete faith in the coaching staff there and we will end up 9-1. IF/when we do end up 9-1 it will be near impossible to keep us out of the playoffs. So Coe, dont lose.

I'm not sure who would have been considered the offensive guru of the conference over the past few years, but I'm convinced now he's calling plays for Coe. They better lock him up because others will be calling. Some of the things he does with formations and route patterns in combination with the tempo they play at, makes it damn hard to adjust to. I think they caught Central off guard early with their running game coming out of the formations they used. They didn't show that the week before and probably not in the first two games either. Of course it doesn't hurt to have real good athletes.

Tyler and his staff do their homework. Tyler watches TONS of film and does a great job of planning (in and out of season). It doesn't hurt that he's been able to learn from guys like his dad and Raeburn.  Having real good athletes certainly gives you the freedom to expand your playbook though. A little recruiting never hurts.

Congrats to the Kohawks on a nice win.

A couple of thoughts/observations:

1) Kohawks are good.
2) Central boys were NOT ready to play.

Evidences from listening to the game:  "Game-On" readiness/attitudes don't allow 500+ yards of offense to anyone, lest you're getting 50-pointed by some FAR superior team.  Poor tackling -- same deal.  Jumping offsides with your opponent on the 1 yard line?  Then giving up the first down.  It just sounded to me like the Coe guys had a hungrier desire to win this game.  I'd bet a dozen Casey's donuts that if a 2nd game were played tomorrow, the 530+ yards stats would look much different.  Who knows about the outcome....not going there, as the Kohawks proved that they were the better team when the game was on the line.

I DID think Central would have difficulty with Coe's passing game....I've believed that our under coverage has been very soft last year and to present.  I DID NOT expect Coe to embarass the rush defense like they did.

Hard to understand such an apparently casual Central effort.  Nevertheless, Credit to Coe for bragging rights to a butt kicking.  We'll find out who both teams really are over the next few weeks!

Well, you could see Coe lose to UD and Wartburg.  Wartburg lose to UD and Central.  UD and Central  both go 7-1.  Central beat UD and has a better overall record so the Dutch get the tie breaker.  Unless the IIAC goes with the Rose Bowl rule and UD wins the tie breaker because they haven't won the title since 1980.

Unlikely, yes.  Very unlikely, you bet.  Purple Heys reports pigs flying over SoCal if that scenario plays out...possibly.  But, it COULD happen :D
Just for you, dog, I will wait until after Saturday to determine how to cheer for the Coe-WB game.  I agree the scenario is unlikely, but I'm willing to go with it COULD happen.    :D

Kohawks move up to #6.  Dutch stay in top ten at #9.  Good to see them stay in Top ten.  Great for the IIAC.
That is terrific news for the IIAC.  Glad to see it.

I think Central may have improved on the penalties we Dutch fans were complaining about, but when they happened, they were very costly.  Now I would like to see the Dutch step up their agressiveness of defense.  Our turnover ratio is terrible this year and not at all like the traditional Dutch football teams.  We missed some opportunities for interceptions and haven't been forcing fumbles at all.  But Coe forced a game changing turnover punching the ball loose just before Furlong hit the endzone.

Mav also has a good point in that there were a number of missed tackles that went for extra yardage.  I will give credit to Coe for having good players and strategy, but we have to address some of those issues.  I don't know that I would say Central was not ready to play, both offenses were having their way pretty much the entire first half.  They made adjustments and got the stops in the second half, Central ran out of gas on defense.  If one or two plays, specifically the turnover out of the endzone and the penalty at the other end that might have turned into a safety or better, it would have been a whole different game the rest of the half.  We just need to learn from the game and the coaching staff will take care of that.

Old Dutch

Here's a question for the group to contemplate:

From Co-defensive coordinator Coach Pfantz bio:

  • "A former all-Iowa Conference linebacker and captain at Coe College, Pfantz was a four-year letterwinner for the Kohawks, helping lead the squad to a share of the 2002 league title and an NCAA Division III playoff berth. He earned a bachelor's degree at Coe in 2004 and a master's degree in education in 2007."

Could it be a little of the former Coe defensives schemes and tendencies have been  installed in the Central D and familiarity of weaknesses been exploited by KoHawk offensive play calling?

I have no problems with Coach Pfantz, looks to be a great addition to the Dutch staff.  Nor am I digging for excuses, but I've also seen the disadvantages of too much knowledge of your schemes on the other sideline.  Just sayin' . . .

Wacko is right.

Attended most of the Central vs. Augustana JV game tonight, very different story from last week against Simpson.  Granted it was a totally different level of quality team.  Augustana was leading 21-0 when I got tired of being the main course for the mosquitos.  One week I say the cupboard is full of talent in waiting, tonight was a different story.  We made some costly errors, but could not figure out the QB situation.  One of the two freshmen QB's that impressed me so much last week did not play at all tonight and the second half QB was passing 80% of the time it seemed and threw rarely catchable passes.  Not sure how they decide who plays and who doesn't.  Not sure what to make of it.

Wartburg JV beat Simpson's JV and most of their varsity 27-21 yesterday in Indianola. Wartburg dressed 49 and Simpson dressed about 100.

Are there any rules as to who gets to play JV ball?  Or maybe I should say...is there any way to police which players a school puts into their JV games???

I believe the coaches police themselves. The players can only play in a certain number of games.

NCAA DIII Bylaw 17.9.5.2 states a player shall participate in no more than 10 contests per year.  This includes Varsity, JV, and Freshman games.  Exemptions exist for 12 member conferences and playoffs.  Page 147 of the bylaws.
