I haven't been on the board in a long time but I just heard something about Simpson football that I was hoping to get some insight on.  What are Storm fans opinion of Glogowski as a coach?  He is in his 3rd season so he has a large group of his own kids in the program and it is looking a lot like last season.  Just curious if anyone knew anything about whats going on down there?

This message was from mrs. doolittledog re:  the status of one of our favorite Spartan supporters.

Bird Dog: It's amazing that state schools don't win every Division III national championship with those numbers. On a percentage basis, they win right around 25%, which is consistent with the percentage of public schools in Division III.

Problem is that this is not high school. Colleges don't hang up signs in the dorms and recruit from the people already on campus to come try out for the team. People on the rosters are there because they came to the school with that in mind.
Division III schools are as large as 20,000 (NYU) and as small as 590 or so (Blackburn). Enrollment isn't the determining factor in a program's success.

BINGO!!!

If you build a winning program....they will come...

This is true, to an extent. Kid A in Wisconsin chooses to go to Wisconsin after being recruited to UWW (or any of the other schools), chances are that decision was not about money. If Kid B in Iowa chooses to go to Iowa after being recruited by Coe and Central (or any of the other schools), money could have very well been a (if not THE) deciding factor.

But you're changing the subject from size to scholarships. ;)

Size/scholarship/cost of attending all matter... just stating that state schools are much different

Glad to hear that Doolittle is doing much better.  I have been away for a couple of days and didn't know he was ill until it seems he is nearly recovered.  Glad to hear it, hope the whole family gets and stays healthy.

Go Dutch!

I, also, heard there was going to be a Storm gathering in Pella on Saturday afternoon, my opinion is that it will all blow over early.

I would place Coe, Central, and Cornell on the same level as Mount Union.  If I were University of Wisconsin-Whitewater I would be embarrassed to play at that level.

Come on you have 10,700 students with reduce addmission standards compared to Coe and Central.  Tuitions that are half to a third.

We do have a school in Iowa that is up to your standards but they have some "deleted"insert(fortitude)and play in the FCS.  It's called University of Northern Iowa enrollment 13,000.  They are a comparable institution with yours.

I bet you even tried to play in the Little League  when you were 16.

blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah

Why is it we get to enjoy the prose of all these eloquent Wisconsin fans on our board these days.  They must be threatened by Central's blossoming win streak against their conference.  Go Dutch

The Kestrel is not a B.S.er:

Morse will attend St. Thomas on what amounts to a full scholarship through the school's diversity program. He received little attention from NCAA Division I and II football programs, but did get some interest from Division II Winona State for basketball.

"They weren't going to give me a full scholarship, and I needed a lot of money to go to school," Morse said.

He is going to try to play basketball and football for the Tommies.

"He's going to get what amounts to a $40,000-a-year education for little if any money," said Como Park coach Kirby Scull, who served as an assistant coach for the Metro All-Stars. "You can't argue with that."

Cut and pasted from story by Dean Spiros, Minneapolis Tribune.

Thanks for verifying it, Kestrel.    Like I said...................WOW!

Danimal, St. Thomas is definitely well on its way to the mountain top.  For example, its game day program vs UWRF mentioned that five 5th year seniors (don't redshirt/grayshirt at a private school, remember? Too costly!) are starting for them and that four Division I players have transferred in this year alone. Starting RG and MLB came from U of M, I believe.

Junior QB Greg Morse shares time at QB for UST.  In an article printed in the Minneapolis Tribune after the Minnesota H.S. All Star game, his coach at St. Paul Como Park H.S., Kirby Scull, was quoted as saying, "Greg turned down scholarship offers from Winona State and others.  A  $40,000 education so close to home was just too good to pass up." I believe the word "free" was actually used, but I know it was implied.  I'm sure some SJU posters on MIAC board read the article, too (the reporter spoke with Gagliardi after the game!!) , and can confirm its accuracy. Secretary of State Madeline Albright once said, "What's the point of having a mighty army if you don't use it?".  My corruption of her words: "What's the point of having a huge endowment if you don't spend (some of) it?"

WOW, kind of shoots the crap out of that old argument that public school have the upper hand because of their cheap tuition., now doesn't it?   I know from first hand experience that academic money, (Wink, Wink) exists to level the playing field much more than privates care to admit but this story takes the cake.  Never heard it admitted so publicly before.  (the newspaper article is what I am referring to.)

So sorry, Guys, to roll out the ole' dead horse but............ this was just too good to pass up!     ;) :D ;D
Had this convo a few weeks ago regarding the "so called," tuition that a Tommy football player is paying at STU, a private school.  Anyone who believes that the difference in price tags for these athletes who attend private vs. public schools is so far apart has never experienced the recruiting process, I am guessing.  Is this an extreme case, probably but tuition reduction for athletes under the guise of Academic $$ is very common.  We were assured many times that the final cost would be nowhere near the published price tag by many private schools.

A pessimist is a man who feels that all women are bad. An optimist hopes so.

Two boys are playing football at a park in Pella, IA, when one of the boys is suddenly attacked by a crazed Rottweiler. Thinking quickly, the other boy takes a stick and shoves it under the dog's collar, twists it, and breaks the dog's neck, thus saving his friend.

A sports reporter who was strolling by sees the incident and rushes over to interview the boy. He tells the boy, "I'll title it 'Young Central Fan Saves Friend From Vicious Animal'".

"But I'm not a Central fan." the little hero replies.

"Sorry, since we're in Pella, I just assumed you were," says the reporter and he starts writing again. He asks "How does 'Knight Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Attack' sound?"

"I'm not a Knight fan either, " the boy says.

"Oh, I thought everyone in the Iowa Conference was either for the Dutch or the Knights. What team do you root for?" the reporter asks.

"I'm a Simpson fan," the boy replies. "They're the best."

The reporter smiles, starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes: "Little ******* From Indianola Kills Beloved Family Pet."

I just got back home.  I get to spend about another week at home, but feel much better.  Thank you for all the well wishes.  That was very nice.

This was a bad week to be away, I missed out on so many Central/Simpson jokes!!!

Willie, Loras could have lost to UD last year as well as finished bottom of the conference and UD could have been national champs.  Loras kids and fans would still say they are good and UD stinks.  It's the whole "if you fail to acknowledge the other school exists" then you must be better.

Looking forward to the games this weekend...from the comfort of my bed ;)
