I would much rather be gloating about Wartburg's win on Saturday, but I'm having a bit of a time about Chris Norton's injury. My best friend in high school sufferd a similar spinal injury in a construction accident when he was 20 so I know what the consequences can be. All I can say is that God has a plan that sometimes takes us in a totally different path than we ever thought we would take. I pray that Chris makes a full recovery and is able to lead the life he wants.

FBD I think this shows how right your priorities are.  Football is great and gloating about a big win is part of being a fan, but when a young man we don't even know personally gets hurt playing a game we all love it does temper any gloating to be done because this is life we are talking about.  I hope and pray Chris has a full recovery.  We all are sworn enemies on the field while the game is going on but when this happens it brings us all back to reality and lets us know that we are all people and while we love the big slobberknocker hits we don't ever want the kids to have a permanent injury.  Not only does Chris need God to help heal and comfort him I think his parents also need Him.  God bless Chris and his family in this time.

Seeing the shake up in the polls didn't surprise me.  I can understand how the voters dropped the Dutch out of the top 10 and all the way down.  I think that losing early can help a team as well.  With the rankings now if the Dutch win against the Knights does that vault them past Coe in the end?  Just interested in everyones thoughts.

I think some of you forget how much the Floods of 2008 impacted Coe financially compared to the eight other schools in the league.  I think this might have something to do with what is going on.

Not trying to be sarcastic here....just curious how the floods impacted Coe financially  ??? I didn't think Coe was located in an flood zone and haven't most businesses, etc rebuilt already with help of state or federal funding  ???

Most importantly, my prayers continue to go out to Luther's player and family. Whenever I think of situations like this, I always imagine if it was my child. I also agree about Coach McMartin.........very classy.

The steam issue in Cedar Rapids (Steam Plant knocked out) cost Coe $2-3 Million.  There were also a few areas of campus that were effected, but not as much as what the steam plant did.

To answer your question about most businesses being back up and running?  Downtown is no where near what is used to be from before the flood.  There have been a few places that have opened up thinking they were good to go, but business never returned to where it was before and they had to close.  It's really a sad deal.

Rutgers player paralyzed on kickoff

http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2010/10/update_coming_on_legrand.html

Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand suffered a spinal cord injury Saturday [10/16/10] in the Scarlet Knights' 23-20 overtime victory against Army and has no movement below his neck, the school announced today.

LeGrand was injured while making a tackle on a kickoff with 5:10 left in regulation against Army. LeGrand lay motionless for seven minutes while his neck was immobilized and he was placed on a backboard and then carted off to Hackensack University Medical center.

The injury was at the C3-C4 level of LeGrand's vertebrae, and emergency surgery was performed to stabilize his spine. LeGrand is in intensive care at Hackensack and is expected to remain there for the near future, according to a statement released by the Rutgers athletic department.

Just two weeks ago, Texas teenager Diondre Preston was paralyzed from the shoulders down. The Molina High School quarterback's spinal cord was severed during game play, according to the Dallas Morning News. Last year, at least two other high school players were paralyzed in Texas.

I just watched a special on ESPN about helmet to helmet contact. The NFL is going to review the rules and is said to start enforcing suspensions.

"NEW YORK -- Aiming for the head or leading with the helmet to deliver a blow could soon cost NFL players game time as well as money.
The league is considering suspending players for illegal hits in an effort to help prevent serious injuries, NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson told The Associated Press on Monday, one day after several scary collisions in games."

I am amazed on the support that Chris Norton is getting. Almost 8,000 visitors to his site and rising. It is truly remarkable the progress he is showing and also remarkable the amount of people he has touched from across the nation.

I was talking to a friend about Chris today and she brought up on how Gods work can also work in reverse. Meaning all of us that are reaching out to him, that the power of the Lord is touching us also, not just Chris.

I didn't mean to get all religious here, but this young man is truly remarkable. The strength that he is showing can be a model to many.

Your friend is correct.  This unfortunate accident brings us all back to examine oursleves in these times.  Just glad he is progressing the way he is.

I hope in this next post that you don't think I'm crazy :o, psychotic ::) or out of my mind :'(.

I love football. I love the hard hitting in football. I believe in extreme aggressiveness in football. When I played, I played hard and what some would think to be dirty. I like to think of it as 'street ball'. I was thrown out of two games for fighting and that was baseball. I yell at the TV when I watch football.

I tell my boys to play hard, and then play harder and then hit them till it hurts. I just called my son last week to tell him to turn it up a notch. I want to see him hit harder.

I am repetitive on what I tell my boys....This is football, not badminton; Hit them till they don't want to come back on the field; continue hitting them until the whistle blows; I want to see the other guy crying to his mommy from the side lines....I probably drive my sons crazy when I continuously tell them the same thing over and over and over again.

Why bring this up? There are going to be a lot of players hitting the field this week end and football will continue. Is there going to be any team thinking to themselves, we better turn it down a little this week? I do believe there are going to be some players this week end giving some second thoughts on how to play and those players will get hurt.

Don't get me wrong everyone and please don't think that this is bad timing. Football will continue and it already has.

You are much closer to the game than this distant fan.  But I agree with you 100%.  I sure don't want to see football be wimpball.  I want to see everyone play and hit as hard as they can...just not head first.

YES, I DO THINK YOU ARE INDEED PSYCHOTIC OR AT BEST A SOCIOPATH.  VIOLENCE AND HEAD TO HEAD AND SPEARING FOOTBALL IS NOT A GAME.  I TRUELY HOPE YOUR CHILDREN DO NOT EXPERIENCE WHAT HAS RECENTLY HAPPENED ON ALL LEVELS OF FOOTBALL IN TERMS OF INJURIES.....IN SPITE OF YOUR OBSESSION.  HOPEFULLY THEIR MOTHER HAS SOME COMMON SENSE.
