ESPN Game Day just finished a report on "hard hits" in college football and resulting injuries with focus on the Rutgers U player who was injured last week.  But also getting respectable ... and more important, respectful mention ... was Chris Norton and Luther College.

Let's keep everyone safe today ... and ...

GO SPARTANS!

You beat me to it.... Chris was mentioned by the Game Day crew, with their well wishes and support for a full recovery. It doesn't get much bigger than that!

Go Chris, and Go Dutch!

Nice to see the Dutch D get some picks today.  Didn't check the stats but with 9 sacks I'm guessing net rushing yards is negative for Loras.  Looks like Wartburg Ran over DBQ so they continue their roll.

Way to go Dutch - keep it going!

We had a great time in Waverly today.  Well, the game wasn't so great for us Spartan fans...but the Wartburg group were great hosts at the Parents Tailgate.  I got to meet newknightdad, footballdaddy, and some others I can't think of right now.  warthog was nice enough to come over the the Dubuque sideline prior to the game and introduce himself to me.  Lots of grilled meat, chips, donuts, cookies, and um...alcohol of different types were all in abundance pregame.  My daughter is still excited she was able to eat cotton candy for the first time in her life.

Spartan fans became aware about 5 minutes before kickoff that Spartan QB Wyatt Hanus is out for the season with mono, which made us nervous.  The game started out well enough.  Dubuque hit a 42yd field goal with about 2 minutes left in the first half to make it a 20-17 game.  The UD defense seemed to stifen up after allowing Wartburg a lot of yards early and the UD offense, after an understandable slow start had a nice 2nd quarter and was moving the ball well.  That is when Wartburg drove the field and scored a TD to go into half time up 27-17.  Wartburg received the 2nd half kickoff and immediately scored another TD to go up 34-17.  And then the flood gates opened.

For those old time IIAC fans you know UD has had a history of giving up when the going gets rough.  That didn't happen today.  Dubuque fought hard, but Wartburg is a VERY good team and was able to dominate the Spartans on both sides of the ball today.  Wartburg could run or throw the ball equally well.  Once Dubuque was down the Wartburg D was able to sit back and pick off UD deep balls.  It was an ugly 2nd half for Dubuque but it was Wartburg that made it ugly for the Spartans...it wasn't for a lack of effort out of UD.

Again, thank you to the Wartburg parents tailgate...Newnknightdad, footballdaddy and others were very good to us.  I also want to add that I thought it was a nice gesture that they were collecting money for Luthers Chris Norton and plan to make their donation to the Nortons when Wartburg plays Luther next week.  A very nice touch.

I think Dubuque getting their bye week this week is good timing and I expect them to come out fired up against Luther in 2 weeks time.  Go Spartans!!!

footballdaddy

DDog, our tailgate was just that much better by you and your daughter's attendance. It was great meeting you. Hope for the best to the Spartans for the rest of the season.

D-Dog, thanks for the game summary. I had a wedding today so got to listen to the first qtr was all. I heard Wyatt had mono and couldn't play but how did you hear he would be out for the season? Not saying he wouldn't be just wondering if mono could do that to someone? I know it's serious with the spleen possibly rupturing but 3 more weeks? I hope not but too bad. He was having a nice season. But, injuries are part oif football and the game must go on.

Congrats to the Knights and good luck.

Iowa and UD losing has made this a difficult football day but the sun still comes up tomorrow.

I just heard a parent saying he was out for the season...he could be back earlier I suppose, it was just one person I heard talking on the phone during the game.

That Iowa game was a brutal ending to my day.  It ended just as we were pulling into our driveway at home.  The only thing that took the sting out a little bit was my in-laws stopped over and took us out to Joensy's to eat.  In-laws buying the entire family dinner always cheers me up :D

NewKnightDad

Doolittle it was great meeting you and your daughter yesterday and I am glad you made it to the tailgate.  It turned out to be a great afteroon for football and a great turnout for the tailgate, lots of new faces.

We raised some good money for Chris Norton and his family.  We hope to raise more before we give it to the Luther coaches next week to give to the Norton's.

Keep it up Knights!!
Win or lose we still booze!!

Congratulations to the Dutch!

Missed the game yesterday...work. Weren't there highlights of the games before in the past on Centrals website? I looked, but did not see?

Interesting calls during Friday's high school game....I and the announcers (televised) have never heard of one of the calls/rules before or the motion call that the ref showed before announcing the call.

Illegal block below the waist on the lead blocker was called on the defense. (called twice)

The ref, who looked to be experienced (older), had complete control of the game. We were just wondering if the refs at this level had a meeting to make sure all the rules were enforced.
Has anyone heard of this call before? I tried looking it up, but could not find.

AZD

NFHS rules prohibit blcking below the waste period.  I had a game about 5 years ago on a punt return the punting team as the return team had a wall blocking for the returner, one of the punting teams players went and took out the wall by diving and their legs and I dropper the flag.  The rule book does not say blocking bleow the waste for offensive players it says blocking below the waste so we flagged the punting team.

AZD, only 'cut blocks' permitted in HS are by lineman who begin the play on the line of scrimmage. Any other blocks below the waste are illegal. It's one reason why freshman RBs are often a little shaky in pass-pro in college, they are inexperienced at cutting blitzers and lineman. Same for freshman linebackers.

That'd be my guess about the call. If a lb or db cut the legs on a fb or lead blocker it would be an illegal block below the waist.

NAIA Scholarships. You're right about the number. But one major difference with NAIA is the level of rule oversight and enforcement. Schools like USF and Morningside see those numbers in bit more "gray light" shall we say. Many in the GPAC have surmised that the most difficult part of the transition to DII for USF next year will be that they will have to significantly reduce their scholarship number due to increase NCAA compliance.

And you're right, not all of the kids going free is completely athletic scholarship money. They are also getting other forms if aid. But I've got to guess that most IIAC athletes aren't going to school for free. At least most MIAC kids aren't. Case in point: a few years back Bethel had a big recruit (TE/LB) who received a very nice financial aid package by our standards. However it still left thousands of dollars left for the family to cover.  He ended up choosing NWC Iowa to play basketball because their package was almost total coverage. His dad made it pretty clear that his heart had initially been Bethel, but they felt they couldn't turn down the tens of thousands dollars difference (over 4 yrs) and chose NWC. He ended up enjoying it there, but it was a big recruiting loss for BU. FWIW

I read on the Central game recap that Bandow did most of the qbing Saturday while Snead sat.  Anyone know why?

I assume the IIAC entries in the top 25 will probably stay about where they were last week.  Nobody above the Knights, Kohawks and Dutch lost.  Most of the movement will probably be behind the IIAC trio where there were teams that suffered some losses.

I was pleased to meet doolittledog yesterday.  I understand the Wartburg admissions office has started to work up a scholarship proposal for his daughter.

Luther weekend coming up.  I understand this coincides with some sort of break at Wartburg.  Apparently people who plan these sort of things don't have a sense of history.
