First regional rankings are out.

Give the current situation in the IIAC, would a team in the top 10 in regional ranks get left out of the dance?

Due to strength of schedule, Coe won't stay as high as #4 and Central won't be as low as #10.  The question is, how far will Coe drop and how far will Central Climb.  Will Coe be able to stay high enough to get one of six at-large bids, that is the question.

Central won't climb IF they lose another game!  W/ Wartburg on the schedule and other quality IIAC opponents, there are NO guarantees Central wins out.

Well, given it's only a 32 team field, I'd wager there will likely be a couple teams in each region ranked in the top 10 that get left out of the dance.

But several teams are about to take a hit in SOS, Bethel and UST included, so this whole thing is nowhere close to being a finished product.

Just to get the Luther-Wartburg week started: They are selling t-shirts in the Wartburg bookstore saying "Luther went to Wartburg". If you don't get it, check your Lutheran church history. Not a real side splitter, but a little classier than the student Homecoming t-shirt.

As far as football is concerned, this is a scary three game stretch to end the season.  The temptation to overlook Luther is huge. Coming off of a statement game and with Central next week, it's easy to lose focus. If the Knights do that. the Norse will hand them their backsides. Luther has so much incentive to win this game. Wartburg can't take their foot off the gas. One game at a time is so important this week.

"Luther went to Wartburg" ... gotta be one of the great rivalry lines of all time.

LITTLE LATE IN CORRECTING

Yes, Luther did go to Wartburg but he was captured and forced to go.  There he suffered CONSTIPATION for a YEAR and was so embarrassed to be there that he didn't let anyone know he was there.  He also went under the name "Junker George" so his friends wouldn't know.

Obviously he wasn't proud of his stay.

Wartburg students should know the whole history.   :D :D ;)

So will the LC fans be chanting "G-E- G-E, G-E-O-R. O-R-O-R-O-R-G-E, G-E-O-R-G-E, GEORGE, GEORGE?"

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

I am finding it very very hard not to join in on the fun between Luther and Wartburg with this last explanation of why Luther Went to Wartburg....

It's a little more complex than that. He wasn't exactly 'captured' as much as saved/strongly persuaded. So you could really say that Wartburg saved Luther ;D

And it wasn't just constipation. Luther claimed to have battled the Devil...does this make Wartburg 'one hell of a place'  ???

He also translated the entire New Testament from Greek (and Aramaic) to German. Putting the Bible into the vernacular for the first time in a 1000 yrs and establishing the foundation of a common German language.

But Luther was the first to say he hated Wartburg and couldn't wait to leave :o

Man, this rivalry really does have some great history. You guys need a trophy for the winner...German Bible, Katie von Bora statue, 95 Theses...there has to be something that's trophy worthy!!

Maybe that's why Luther ended up at Wittenburg ... not even the right Conference!

Congratulations to the Dutch!

Missed the game yesterday...work. Weren't there highlights of the games before in the past on Centrals website? I looked, but did not see?

Interesting calls during Friday's high school game....I and the announcers (televised) have never heard of one of the calls/rules before or the motion call that the ref showed before announcing the call.

Illegal block below the waist on the lead blocker was called on the defense. (called twice)

The ref, who looked to be experienced (older), had complete control of the game. We were just wondering if the refs at this level had a meeting to make sure all the rules were enforced.
Has anyone heard of this call before? I tried looking it up, but could not find.

AZD

NFHS rules prohibit blcking below the waste period.  I had a game about 5 years ago on a punt return the punting team as the return team had a wall blocking for the returner, one of the punting teams players went and took out the wall by diving and their legs and I dropper the flag.  The rule book does not say blocking bleow the waste for offensive players it says blocking below the waste so we flagged the punting team.

I'm not sure this is entirely true, in Texas I think you are able to cut block anywhere on the field, just like in college.

That may be Texas and the may have adaptations to the rules.  I was siting the NFHS rules.  Each state can do what they want but I know what the NFHS rules state and what are enforced here in Iowa.

I think DF2k4 is saying that the punting team dove a players legs to break then wall when they were the ones on defense.  This is quite different that cut blocking.  Cut blocking applies to the tackle box and is only used for blocking purposes on the offensive side of the ball.

As mentioned by others on here cut blocks in the free blocking zone is ok as long as the plaer being blocked is not engaged with another player.  The Free blocking zone is from tackle to the tackle and 1 yard either side of the ball.  So a back in the offensive backfield can not block below the waste in the backfield.  A tightend can not cut a linebacker if the LB is one yard off the ball or outside the tackle box.

Illegal block below the waist on the lead blocker

Thanks for the explanations on this call. What threw me off was the word block inside a call against the defense.
I did look into this myself and found a referee site that this was a topic of discussion. They found this to be a very gray area and a penalty that was hard to call and to recognize.

I would only partially agree with this.  It may be hard to recognize as you are not looking for the defense to do this as the defense is usually trying to avoid blocks and tackle the runner but it is not a gray area.  A block below the waste is a block below the waste.  So when you do see it, it is easy to throw a flag.
