Our minister, who is a Luther grad, didn't find the "Luther went to Wartburg" t-shirts near as funny as I did ;D

The Magic Mirror

A Wartburg football player asked, Mirror mirror on the wall who's the greatest team in the IIAC?

The Mirror replied, Wartburg!

The Wartburg football player called over a couple teammates and asked again,
Mirror mirror who's the greatest team in the IIAC?

The Mirror replied, Wartburg!

Now the whole team asked, Mirror mirror who's the greatest team in the IIAC?

The Mirror replied, Wartburg!

A great Roar came from the team!

Then the Mirror added, but the correct answer is Central!

The Wartburg player asked, Then why did you tell us it was Wartburg?

The Mirror responded, I just thought you were used to hearing the incorrect answer because you were from Wartburg!

This question was asked on the MWC board: What is Cornell going to do with their wrestling program?  Wrestling is no longer a MWC sanctioned sport.  I sure hope the IIAC wouldn't allow them to maintain dual membership (IIAC for wrestling and MWC for everything else).

That was a harsh comment directed toward #3 on Luther squad. I was mere yards from the hit at that point, it was a poor call by the side judge (yes, I am a Norse Fan, but speaking as a football fan).  Luther had a chance to respond a few plays later but was unable to respond.

But the thing is #3 Norse was also ejected vs the Dutch for some spirited one on one with J.Snead.  Both were flagged during the game. btw.  I would side with Warthog on this one.

Former IIAC member Upper Iowa continues their football tradition.

With yesterday's victory in front of 600 fans the Peacocks won a game and moved to a sparkling 2-7 for the season.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.  ;)

Memo to Cornell:  Switching leagues or classifications doesn't change football fortunes.

It might if they went NathCon.  North Park (0-for the millennium in CCIW play) beat soon-to-be NathCon champ Benedictine by 11 this season! ;D

I took a break from IIAC and actually witnessed some Upper Iowa play yesterday.  The word in Fayette is DII has been good to them, get a better recruit and more local players.  The D looked pretty stout, if they hadn't given up two 70+ yd KO returns it would have been a more impressive score.  I would say improving from what I saw a few years back and good young players that are from Iowa, so more likely to stick around.

In reviewing UIU box scores, I see they have attracted 5230 for five home dates this year.  That averages 1046 per game.  The 5230 includes 1940 poor souls who attended the homecoming game and a home date with Winona State where it is reported the guests out numbered the home team fans.

I have no idea how they can fund a D2 program with numbers like this.

Sunday IIAC news from the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald.

UD mens futbol wins share of IIAC title...http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=300720

The Knights have a 1/3 share of the IIAC soccer title.  I hope the doesn't happen in football.

That is exactly the line I got from a UIU booster recently.  I have always had a soft spot for UIU.  They had many similarities to UD as a school that didn't have the best facilities, had a hard time attracting local students and so on.  The thing is, UIU has been D2 since 2003, and up until the last 2 seasons their football roster was made up of a bunch of Florida kids and JC transfers.  It was the hiring of current head coach Tom Shea that made the difference in bringing in local kids in my opinion, not the fact that UIU was a D2 school.  Also, the fact that UIU is putting $60million into their Fayette campus I would imagine has something to do with the fact that more and more local kids are heading towards Fayette.  And, Upper Iowa has some name recognition in our state with the centers they have in different cities across the state.

You add up a campus with lots of new construction, a new coaching staff that is capable of attracting local kids, a school with centers across the state and the name recognition that goes with it...and I think that has more to do with UIU attracting more local kids than the fact that they are now a D2 school.

Its also been reported they benefit from the academic expectations of maintaining one's scholarship.  Instead of waltzing through on need based financial aid, a student with an athletic scholarship has some accountability and a bit more commitment to the books, if they plan on sticking around anyway.  I think retention may still be an issue.

After refiring the brain cells that got damaged last night, I can only take away one positive from the Luther game. The Knights showed that they can stink it up in all phases of the game against a good opponent and still get a win. However, I think they used up their mulligan for the season. Luther deserved to win that game but Wartburg played well at critical times to stay ahead. We definetly will not have that opportunity next week.

I don't know how thay do it in Pella, but Wartburg requires all students receiving school sponsored aid to maintain a 2.5GPA.
