I understand a trophy was presented to the Wartburg football team last Saturday?

I realize the Knights have a guaranteed share of the title, but Coe has a chance to be conference co-champions with a combination of a Kohawk victory and a Knight loss this weekend.  It just seems it would be more respectful of all the teams involved to wait until everything is in the books before they start handing out hardware.

Last year Central received their trophy after the game with Wartburg in Waverly, but their regular season was over.

I for one would add that to my list of things that would make me mad if I were a Simpson football player.  There are too darned many bad karma things adding up.  The Knights better come prepared to play four quarters of errorless football on Saturday.  If they don't, the Simpson team may come over to the Wartburg sidelines after the game and carver to letters C-O in front of the word CHAMPION on the trophy the Knights got last Saturday.

Never mind, I figured it out.  That was supposed to be Central's trophy.  Had they won on Saturday, they would have been guaranteed a share of the IIAC title.  Instead Wartburg won and screwed up the presentation festivities they were probably planning  to hold at mid-field.  So instead they took the trophy down to the Wartburg locker room, set it on the bench, and let the Wartburg team find it when they came off the field.  Damn, I love it when we screw up plans for the Dutch.

Cornell being in the MWC and the possible 5 year record with 50 games I think they can win maybe 20 at most.  I think doolittles prediction about only being 1-34 with Grinnell on the list is a little low.  I also think Brautigan will be able to pull some upsets off in the last two years of that 5 year stretch and may even go 5-5 those years.  3 years of 3-7 and two years of 5-5 put them at 19-31.  I think if Cornell goes to the MWC they have abandoned Iowa as a recruiting base.  Not that they ever had a large Iowa contingent on their team but having 90% of their opponents out of state I don't think there will be much name recognition for the recruits in Iowa.  The recruits have heard of Central, Wartburg, Coe, and the other Iowa colleges but how do you go into a kids home in Southwest Iowa and say we play St Norberts.  They say WHO? Just my two cents on the subject but I trust that Coach B will improve the Rams I just don't know how much they will improve.

I think Cornell will win significantly more over the next 5-10 years if they join the MWC.  They have won before in a version of that league and I assume the roster size and issues for sports like football won't be as extreme over the long run in the MWC as it has been in the IIAC.  Steve Miller recruited me when I was a senior in high school in NE Iowa back in 1990-91, and other than the one class at a time stuff I had lots of positives about the Cornell school and the football program at the time.  Mount Vernon seemed like a good town to go to school at and Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are close by.  I ended up going to Luther instead, but I still respect Cornell.

It has been tough for the Rams though when the rival in Coe has been doing so well and seems to be getting better or more consistent in many IIAC sports.  The move to the MWC won't be hard for Cornell, but not having Coe in the league with them will be weird and an unknown.

Maybe it is just me, but I like having Cornell in the league more than Billy Penn or Upper Iowa.  I never remember thinking that Billy Penn or Upper Iowa were quality schools (in the 1990s), but I guess they did have good baseball teams when I was playing.

No matter the circumstances, it was a good move to have actual trophy presentation in the locker room instead of the field. It allowed the Central players and fans the opportunity to clear out before the Knights came back on the field. In my opinion it showed some respect to a Dutch team that played a hard-fought game and just had their season ended.

As I said before, now that we have the trophy, now we need to earn the title.

Cornell's intent on moving to the MWC.

I have many thoughts, most of which I'll keep to myself, and only share when plied with enough Sierra Nevada Pale Ale when I come out for my next visit to the great State of Iowa...    ;)

I kind of feel let down as if it were a resignation to the thought that we can't compete...heck, I went through 4 years feeling that we were on the verge; but 1-31 is the number regardless whether we lost by blowout or in OT.

I will say this, I take pride in the fact that 4 of our 5 seniors from last year gained All-IIAC recognition, 2 gained national recognition. (And the 5th kid is a great kid, who I am equally proud of).  It affirms to me that we achieved some level of competitiveness.  And I will always remember the joy I saw out on that field when these boys helped their team beat Loras, on Senior Day, to end their conference play frustration.

Taking Heys Rev. 3 on a recruiting tour of IIAC schools next spring?!?! :D

Cornell just completed a $105million capital campain.  Cornell just announced they are planning to spend $3million on athletic facility upgrades...with most of it going towards improving their football facility.  Cornell has the money to compete in the IIAC.  Dubuque went 9-75 in IIAC play during the 1990's...take out their 5-5 record against Billie Penn and that would make them 4-70 during the 1990's.  You can call Dubuque a middle of the road IIAC team now.  Not a conference power, but a decent football team.  There is no reason to believe Cornell can't do the same thing.

I won't buy into the fact Cornell alums in Wisconsin and Illinois want to see Cornell back in the MWC.  I don't buy that Cornell wants to be in an athletic conference of like minded schools like the MWC.  I think Cornell thinks they can win more in the MWC.  That is no given and in the long run I think it hurts their student athletes to be travelling so much.  But oh well, I guess.

Are you really complaining about what game Wartburg was given the Trophy at?  If i was part of a team, I'd be pumped to get the trophy as soon as I knew I had won the league title, even if it was a share of the league title.

What was that thing the Dutch did at mid-field before the game last Saturday.  They came charging up to the 50 yard line and started grunting like a bunch of gorillas.  Is that supposed to intimidate the opponent or something?

If I was on the other side of the fifty I might end up with pee running down my leg after that happened.  It wouldn't be a result of being scared.  It would be a result of laughing so hard.

No, I wasn't so much complaining about getting the trophy as I was commenting that I think it is a little disrespectful to Coe and Simpson to give it to Wartburg before we know how the league standings are going to shake out.  Coe has a chance to become co-champions this weekend and Simpson has a chance to force the Knights to share the title.  I just don't think any team should get a trophy until it is determined which teams get a share of it.  It would have simply been more polite to wait a week.

I would imagine that in the event of co-champions both teams would receive a championship trophy.  Given that Wartburg has already clinched their share and Coe's fate is yet to be determined wouldn't it make sense to give them their trophy?   It's no disprespect to Coe or Simpson it's simply an acknowledgement of what Wartburg has already achieved. Why should Wartburg have to wait to see what Coe does to celebrate what they have already achieved?

i agree.  the general sentiment between many people is this is a move being made because football can't win.  i think it's too bad especially on account other cornell teams are really starting to step it up.  cornell was a founding member of the mwc, so there is some history between the conference and the school.  i always enjoyed competing in the iiac.  theres a lot more talent to be had in the iiac and to me it means a lot more when you win.  its almost like theyre taking the easy road out.

Unfortunately, a schools athletic program, and quite often the whole school, is judged on the performance of the football team. Donors don't line up to contribute because women's cross country won conference. I think that Cornell feels like to energize the alumni and donations, they need to move to where success on the field translates into $$$$$$$$$$$$. If football becomes a mid-level team in the MWC, it may become easier to get the donations and recruits to become a successful program.
