Luckily for Dubuque, Joe and Linda Chlapaty aren't jerks like that UConn guy seems to be.  That said, I would think President Bullock and AD Runkle would be smart enough to include the Chlapaty family in any big decisions concerning UD.  Especially since the Chlapaty's have given 10 times the amount that guy has given to UConn.

I have a naive/idealized viewpoint.  At what $$ point does a donor "deserve" to be consulted.  Where in the term "donation" is there a quid pro quo?

Joe Chlapaty is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. I am sure he is an important person in every major decision. But, his love for UD runs deep and if you ever listen to him speak about how he came to UD and his father, you understand why.

To answer your question, I think a donor should always be consulted if it has anything to do with his/her money. I think the donor can direct where they want their money to go or they can do a blanket donation for the college to use as it pleases. If the latter is the case, then it is still "polite" to inform the donor what his/her money will be used for. If the former is the case, then you better damn well use their money for what it was intended or they have a right to it back.

In the case of the article, D-Dog is right, that guy gave peanuts and I would think being a D-1 university, they have other donors to pick up the slack. But, the university is correct and needs to make a stand. The Pres and AD choose the coach, not a donor. Although I think a wise Pres and AD listen to their donors opinions and if the opinions differ, maybe give them common courtesy of an explanation of who is being chosen.

If the Pres and AD don't have good relationships with the donors then of course issues like this will result. Otherwise, I would think a donor will support any decision that is made.

doolittledog

UD schedule that is known so far...

09/03 -
09/10 - Anderson University 1:30
09/17 - Loras 6:00
09/24 - Central 1:00

11/12 - BYE

I guess I'm not a big fan of 3 straight home games near the beginning of the season...nor am I a fan of the bye game being the last week of the season...although that could give the Spartans 2 weeks to prepare for their 1st round playoff game ;)

Three IIAC guys make D3 Football's All-Decade Team. I remember Carlos Martinez well. That guy had everyone watching him during warmups. Do any of you BV guys know where he ended up or if he's still playing anywhere?

As a native of the area...all I can say is that I am proud of Clinton.  Way to go!

warthog has been doing some soul searching into what school should replace Cornell in the IIAC.  Now, with the news that Flavor Flav is opening up a fried chicken restaurant in Clinton...the former home of Wartburg College...he is throwing his support behind Ashford University ;D

How do you have that scheduled already?

To the point there is no possible way you can move it?

Priorities, Man!
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Well, his birthday is the 16th...he will have just started kindergarten, so I assume he will have a bunch of friends he wants to come over.  I suppose we could schedule it for the prior weekend...or I could spend the next few months puting it in his ear that what he really wants for his birthday is to spend it in Dubuque watching a D3 football game :D

Either way, I will defer to my wife...the real boss of the house and whenever she schedules it I will just say "yes dear" and do whatever she tells me to do ::)

I think you should introduce him to tailgating. Who wouldn't want a party with hambugers and hot dogs, sights, sounds, colors, and all the pagentry of a football game.

Well, doolittledog, I think I have your problem solved.  September 17th was Grandma Warthog's birthday.  Every red-blooded UD Spartan fan should know that day is a holiday around the UD campus.  Not being at a Spartan football game when September 17th falls on a Saturday would be like not having cherry pie on Washington's birthday.
BE ORANGE

I'll try that out on the Mrs.  She likes warthog and if I add in the kids could also go to the waterpark in Dubuque...she might be sold!!!

Nacubo comes out with their initial list of college endowments.  Not their state by state list, but the whole shootin' match.

http://www.nacubo.org/Documents/research/2010NCSE_Public_Tables_Endowment_Market_Values_Final.pdf

For Iowa Conference schools we have...

Rank  -  School         -  2010
367   -  Buena Vista -  100,476,000 +12.6
368   -  Luther          -   99,844,000  +  6.9
427  -  Coe               -   75,164,000  +  8.2
470  - Central           -  64,144,000  +  1.6
483  -  Simpson        -   61,824,000  +  9.2
494  -  Cornell          -   59,669,000  +  2.9
510  -  Dubuque       -   57,062,000  +  9.5
??? - Wartburg   Did not reply to survey...or I just didn't see them listed!!!
730  -  Loras            -   18,552,000  +  2.4

Somewhat related to football.  The larger the endowment, the more finantial aid the school can offer to their students...though I often hear that Wartburg and Loras offer the most aid...so, uh, hmm.  Maybe this doesn't actually mean anything :-\

The NAIA board posted the 2011 Mid-States Conference football schedules earlier this year and at that time Iowa Wesleyan showed Coe on their schedule...but Olivet Nazarene did not show Coe on their schedule.  And now we get this...interesting indeed.
