It would be ironic, if the kind of karma I was referring to was the Hindu, Buddhist, Jain type. Something tells me those folks might argue that what is termed 'karma' on these message boards is something a bit different from how they understand it. Context does funny stuff with how we understand and define words  ;)

True.

And your moniker reminds me of a book I read to my son Bad Dog Ben :) He's misunderstood too!

Luther loses 24-22 to the Oles.  That is 8 straight losses to St. Olaf but it seems like every year it's a single digit loss for the Norse.  One of these years you would think Luther would find a way to get a win against them.  They are pretty even teams overall.

Big reason the Oles go 6-4 and the Norse go 5-5 most years. >:(

The good from the game:

The DL and front seven played well against the run and had pressure on a good St. Olaf QB.  Clark got his yards at times (enough to win by the way), but the Norse Defense gave the team a chance to win.  They made a couple of nice stands deep inside the 10.

The kick return for a TD to put Luther up 14-7.

The pick that should have led to TD to go up 21-7. >:(

The run game overall did a good job.  Both RBs had moments with the ball, and Reynolds last TD was a great run.

The weather was great!

The bad:

The passing game was really weak all day.  The Oles clearly were a stonger theat in the passing game and that is the main reason the Norse were playing from behind late.  Both teams made mistakes and both would love about 3-4 plays back.

The Norse secondary was overhauled after graduation last spring, and 1-2 Norse DBs had a tough day against a good QB.  Coe is going to present problems again this year.

The Norse fumbled deep in Ole territory after an interception gave them a great chance to go up 21-7.

The Norse also threw a pick on a screen pass deep in Ole territory.  I was hoping for a TD to go up 23-10 right before the half.

One 4th down punt from the offensive formation by Chris Reynolds pinned the Oles on the goal line. :)  The Norse tried it again from around the Norse 40 and it was blocked. ???  Did anyone really think the offense was going for it on that side of the field?

After Chris Reynolds scored a TD to pull to 24-22, it looked to me like he was facemasked on the two-point attempt.

The worst part was both an Ole defender and a Norse WR who were taken to the hospital during the game.  I don't know how they are doing, but it is tough to watch that once, let alone twice in a game.  I know they take more measures these days, but there were huge delays with the injuries to both players.  Very sobering for most of us that were there.

Overall whoever lost the game would have said that they didn't play enough mistake free football.  I guess my overall view is that the Oles looked very 6-4 like, while the Norse looked very 6-4-ish as well.  With the now powerful Billy Penn team coming up followed by a angry Dutch team, the Norse are going to have to do something to get back on track.  0-3 or worse is a concern, but this is a better team to me than a couple of the recent 5-5 editions.  There were some key injuries today and hopefully things are better than they looked.

Report from the Olivet - Cornell game.  First of all, it was hotter 'n' hell!!!  Met some great Cornell fans, including 4 guys (alums and/or parents) who sing a pretty good rendition of the Cornell fight song.  Also got a kick out of OL Sam Cluck who sported a Rams horns haircut.

The game itself was even matched but not played crisply.  Cornell's back-up QB Juan Flores (starter Andy Burdick went out in the 2nd qrtr with some kind of leg injury) was great at scampering around and making good field decisions.  The Flores-Jim Scully passing combination really gave Olivet fits.

Two critical points for the Rams came when Safety Nick Brautigam (yes, the coach's son) literally wrestled the ball away from the Olivet receiver and ran about 45 yards for a TD.  The other key point was when the Rams blocked an Olivet punt and recovered on the Comet's four yard line.

With a half-time score of 21-10 and Olivet leading, the second half had plenty of action resulting in the 36-35 Cornell win.  I'm sure it will be a happy bus ride back to Mt. Vernon, but it still might be a long season for the Rams.  However, they showed themselves to be a scrappy bunch and no one in the IIAC should take them for granted.

Congrats to the Rams!

This is sort of like they say in NW Iowa: "What is a Dutch Reform persons favorite tavern?" The answer: "One that is in the next county."

Not entirely true. In Orange City, most just settle for the next town over: Alton and the Double D.  ;D But it might depend on whether you're simply Reformed or Christian Reformed (not to mention Netherlands Reformed). The latter would probably make sure it was a solid county over.  ;) [hunkering down, preparing to take the inevitable karma hit from some lurking, super sensitive CRC rube  8-)]

But, I suppose no good Dutchman (RCA, CRC, or whatever their stripe) could argue with a tavern that only served the following:   8-)

Thanks to Coe for coming to HSU.  I think that a smarter decision would have been to schedule the game at 6pm.  That was hot, even for us Texans.  Leaving by 11 pm on Saturday night would have gotten you home by 5pm on Sunday.

DuHawks still rested their starters for conference. Top pick in the IIAC has to be the DuHawks if you know anything about football

Who are the DuHawks? I looked through the IIAC and didn't see them?

I'm not sure that Coe had any say in what time the game started.  They knew how hot it was going to be and probably would have gone for that evening start.  Might have made a little difference, but HSU is still a pretty good team.

Anyone shocked that Coe fell so far in the poll?  I would have thought they would be between 15-20 and not hanging on to one of the final two spots in the poll.

I wouldn't say I was shocked on seeing Coe fall in the polls. I didn't like seeing it. I think if there's any a time for a team to "prove" themselves, it's from the preseason polls to the first week. The preseason poll IMO is a good guesstimate along with last years standings. A win would have probably moved them up in the polls. What a tough opponent for Coe to start their season with.  :-\

Congratulations to Cornell for breaking an 11-game losing streak in its 36-35 NCAA Division III victory over Olivet (Michigan). Now it's Olivet's turn to right the ship. The Comets' losing streak now stands at 28.

Kudos also go to Michael Zweifel of Dubuque, who had nine catches in the Spartans' 18-13 victory over Augustana (Ill.). Zweifel, who transferred from Wisconsin-River falls to play for his father, Dubuque coach Stan Zweifel, caught nine passes for 99 yards to move into second place on the NCAA list of career receptions. A senior, Zweifel's 336 receptions move him within 100 catches of Scott Pingel, who played for Westminster (Mo.) in the late '90s.
