On a little different note, just finishing watching an excellent "made for TV" (saturday night) football movie. Not sure the name of it but I definitely want to add it to my "collection" of quality, motivational, and inspirational football movies of all time. Well worth the watch and especially for any father or coach wanting to teach kids whats most important in life.....

Willie, would this happen to be "Facing the Giants"?

IIAC notes in the "Newspaper Iowa Depends On" ;)

That paper ran a "Small College Preview" a little while ago.  Big story on Boyle from Coe and a decent round up of the IIAC teams.  Then under "other D3" they mentioned the NAIA schools.  Standards have really nose dived in the newspaper industry.

Rumor is that the guy that designed Maryland's uniforms is doing the Hawkeye's next.

Comparing tailgate policies between Wartburg and Monmouth:

Saturday 4 – 7 p.m. - Community Tailgate at Regents Park (Northwest of Walston-Hoover Stadium) prior to the Wartburg/Gustavus Adolphus  football game.

I believe there will be a shuttle from the tailgate to the game Sat....

Had there not been a threat of some weather last Sat, I would have utilized the service.

footballdaddy -- if that's the case the Hawkeye nation needs all our prayers! Those Maryland unis are bizarre! An old prof of mine posted on his Facebook page that they look like something a Terrapin would leave on the side of the road after almost being run over by an 18-wheeler.
Not really a bad dog. Just misunderstood!

Then there's the million-dollar question about how much beer to bring on a fishing trip with some Reformed/CRC participants?

Depends.  If you invite ONE only, he'll drink all your beer.  If you invite TWO, they won't drink any.  HA!

This is sort of like they say in NW Iowa: "What is a Dutch Reform persons favorite tavern?" The answer: "One that is in the next county."

[/quote]

Not entirely true. In Orange City, most just settle for the next town over: Alton and the Double D.  ;D But it might depend on whether you're simply Reformed or Christian Reformed (not to mention Netherlands Reformed). The latter would probably make sure it was a solid county over.  ;) [hunkering down, preparing to take the inevitable karma hit from some lurking, super sensitive CRC rube  8-)]

Those Maryland uni's were UnderArmour. U of Ia is Nike.
Aaron Kampman on Coach Ed Thomas
I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

And if you remeber your home town you know that a Norwegian only buys one round a night- the "next one".

I am looking forward to great things out of the Dutch on Saturday.  They showed a lot of heart in Oshkosh and the game provided several coaching opportunities.  It is never fun to lose but I am confident lessons were learned, mistakes will not be repeated and the Dutch will have a great season.  I will feel even better when Oshkosh beats Mt. Union this week.

Congratulations to Cornell's Nick Brautigam and Juan Flores for their defensive and offensive player of the week awards. I'm ready for the home opener this Saturday.

Rumor is that the guy that designed Maryland's uniforms is doing the Hawkeye's next.

I remember making my TV decision last Saturday night between LSU-Oregon and Georgia-Boise State based partly on the fact that both teams had UGLY uniforms in the Georgia-Boise State game.  Oregon also has bad uniforms often, but I like the LSU look so that was the tiebreaker in watching that one.

Georgia has a strong SEC tradition and solid uniforms, but they are a mediocre program right now that is messing around with their look quite often.  They look desperate to me.

Kirk Ferentz is the last guy that would ever agree to something like that.  In fact, they look more 1980s than ever with the ANF stickers back on the helmets.  Hawkeye Basketball in recent years might agree to something crazy though!  Here is a couple things from his press conference:

Q. Have you ever been approached with an alternate uniform design, and would you ever consider it?

COACH FERENTZ: I think that's no and no. I've got to think about the first one.

Q. What do you think of the trending of that this weekend?

COACH FERENTZ: It's great. But I really like our uniforms. I think they look outstanding. That's one thing I'll say, we have sharp uniforms. In my opinion. That's just my opinion. I grew up in Pittsburgh, so what do you expect?

Q. You don't like the ones with the wings?

COACH FERENTZ: I tell you, those would be very fashionable right now, would be my guess. I'm guessing. Somebody would think those would really look good. I'm just guessing.

But, yeah, I don't know. I live with young people and I know how important that is sitting in front of the computer screen with all these different — my kids are good kids, but they spend a lot of time looking at that stuff, so that's important. But we're not changing our uniforms, so, never say never. Okay. Thank you.

Maybe Central could get an alternate design with halos on their helmets.

For all you thin-skinned Dutch fans: THAT WAS A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pat Forde over at ESPN:

Standing tall
One Saturday last October, Rutgers player Eric LeGrand suffered a horrifying in-game injury. His comeback from that injury has been a captivating and uplifting story.

On the same Saturday, another player suffered a similar injury. Nobody noticed, because it happened at Division III Luther College in Iowa. But the comeback story of Chris Norton (24) is every bit as captivating and uplifting for the few who know it.

Norton fractured his neck and compressed his spinal cord making a tackle on a kickoff against Central College. According to Luther College sports information director David Blanchard, doctors initially estimated he had a 3 percent chance of having movement below his neck.

On Saturday, Norton is planning on standing for the national anthem and coin toss when Luther hosts William Penn. That deserves a standing ovation from The Dash.

Well done Mr. Forde, well done. And that is just excellent news about Norton. My prayers go with him as he works towards a full recovery!

Pat Coleman

Thank goodness someone in the national media noticed. Eric LeGrand gets all sorts of kudos and pub and Chris Norton, who was injured the same day, has actually recovered more quickly.
