Congrats to the UD players and supporters.  I think Willie hit the comments out of the park.  I wasnt at the game but listened on the radio.  Had my 35th year high school reunion to go to and this was the first one in a very long while that I didnt have a football game or other activities of my kids to go to so I choose not to go and listen on the radio.  UD has been on the verge for a while of being a good team and contender.  They finally put a whole game together for 4 quarters.  Hats off to the Spartans as they put a whoppin on my Dutch.

The Dutch have to regroup and put this one behind them.  As was posted it a long season. Got a long ways to go.  They can still get in the mix with a win over the Kohawks.

Congrats to BV for taking care of business on Saturday. I'm glad it was an away game so I didn't have to watch. It doesn't get any easier with Wartburg up next.

In no way am I saying Cornell wins with Nick Brautigam playing at free safety but I think he would have certainly helped the cause back there against the passing TDs. He is very experienced at that position and when there is a Freshman playing there who has no experience that really hurts. When I was watching it looked like blown coverage by the FS both times. The KOR beginning the 2nd half didn't help or the safety or the pick 6 so there was definitely other contributing factors. Cornell still isn't deep enough to lose a player like Nick B at that important of a position and be 100% successful. He not only is a good player but a leader/captain of that defense. Losing someone of that caliber is tough. We are still lacking a good run game offensively, but the two freshman kids look promising. Still a lot of season left and I know the Rams will bounce back.

@Willie - My favorite play of the game was the tipped pass that was then caught by #60 (??) and returned for a TD. The tip was a great play in itself, but seeing a D-Lineman snag it out of the air and rumble home is always fun. Not usually much glory for the boys down in the trenches!

Yes, that was definitely a great play and helped keep the Spartan momentum going. However, my favorite play of the game was when back up RB Kyle Acker broke numerous tackles and ran for a long TD. Really, he was stopped dead in his tracks and kept his legs moving and literally powered his way through the defenders on the way to a score.

That was after his previous TD was called back due to a penalty. He ran with authority when he got the chance. Nice to have duel threat in Spaulding & Acker.

Another great story about Fred Jackson.

Great story. I remember watching Fred and he was very dominating but who would have known? It really is a cinderella story and one in which a movie should be made about someday.....hopefully after he helps them win a superbowl.

Rudy and that pollish guy from philly (can't remember the name of the movie) don't have anything on Fred Jackson!

Despite some of the early surprises, (both good and bad) the IIAC is not letting us down again this year.  I can say I'm not a fan of Dubuque, but it is nice to see some new teams rise to the top.  It reminds me of a 2004, I believe, when BV was on a roll and had a shot at the title and lost 3 of their last 4.  A lot of football left to play and a lot of surprises still in store.

On another, somewhat football related note:  My wife got me hooked on The Biggest Loser.  If anyone remembers back when the show first started, Matt Hoover, an assistant wrestling coach at Cornell, won the 2nd season.  This season, a former Cornell football player is on the show.  Ramon Medeiros (sp?) played only 1 season in 2002.  I'll go ahead and toss a few man cards out my pocket on this one.  Found that kind of interesting.

Good luck to everyone this week.  GO RAMS!!!!!

I'm really looking forward to the big Central v Coe homecoming game in Pella this Saturday.  I like my quarterbacks mobile and hostile and neither of these guys seem to be the type to end a run with a slide.  Plus, the Central secondary is due to get it in gear and be as tough as I preseason thought they would be.  I'm hoping they give fits to the guy who was conference player of the year the last two years.  Go Dutch!

I hope the Dutch get things in order (at least this Sat)
The Knights have a little bit of a hole to get out of, but I am confident they will rise to the top by the end of the year. It starts in Mt Vernon with a complete game!

Another great story about Fred Jackson.

When they see him on ESPN," Raeburn said, "they say all those Iowa Conference defensive guys who played in the early 2000s don't feel so bad now. The Patriots' guys aren't able to tackle Freddie, either."

I thought this was the best line from the article.

The guy you can't remember is Vince Papale.  He was the inspiration for the 2006 movie Invincible, starring Mark Wahlberg as Papale and Greg Kinnear as Dick Vermeil. All these guys are great stories, but Palale isn't any less of a story than anybody you listed, IMO. Just think, at age 30, he was the oldest, non-kicker rookie in NFL history, without having played football in college. He was on track scholarship & his school didn't even have a football team. He had is degree in Marketing, so maybe that help sell himself to Dick Vermeil. On a side note, he was also supposedly the inspiration to the 1998 Tony Danza Disney-made flick, The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon. Hands please, who remembers that one?

Don't remember that one (how do YOU remember that one?)...but I do remember University of Dubuque alum Tony Danza doing a reality series last year where he became a teacher in Philadelphia.  I could only stand to watch the 1st episode...so I don't know if he ever mentioned UD...or steered any football players that way ;)

Long story, short - I have a nephew who graduated from a SUNY with an actor in the movie, Kirk Acevedo. My nephew told me the story during the time the movie was released. I've never seen the movie (never was a Tony Danza fan) nor have I ever had the opportunity to meet Kirk.  However, I really did enjoy his work in Band of Brothers.

Finally was able to get on line here in China.  Two weeks of being a tourist ... Shanghai, Yantze River, Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tianammen (sp?) Square ... and great Chinese cuisine.  Top it all off with the news of UD's great win over Central.  Fly out of Beijing tomorrow morning and home to Grand Rapids via Seattle and Minneapolis, in time to get my Pick 'ems in.

GO SPARTANS!

Bobo.....

Rudy and Invincible (sorry I couldn't remember the name) are 2 of my favorite football movies. I love anything inspirational. Great stories in their own right.

My point being......Fred Jackson's story is just as significant and inspirational and I hope they someday make a movie about him. He has been an underdog and has had all the cards stacked against him from the time he made the practice quad with the Bills and I am sure he has had a "motivational" impact on that team.

You can never have too many "inspirational" or "football" movies  ;)
