DuHawk Football is comparable to the Miami Heat, everybody knows we are the best but everybody just hates on us. Our new coach has a couple tricks up his sleeve for the IIAC. You guys saw the first trick, only playing 2 or 3 of the quarters, just like the Heat. Wait till we play all four come IIAC time
As a Central fan you can imagine how I have been dreading the Loras game ever since this got posted a couple of weeks ago.  Central has been susceptible to tricks and now I have to worry about them falling for the DuHawks playing all four quarters.  I wonder if I should try to alert Coach McMartin?

Well, just so we can keep the discussion all about Dubuque today ;D

Although it's probably not a good thing to talk individual players and we should probably just be talking more vaguely about recieving corps and running backs, and linebacking tandems...

All this talk about UD receivers and Justin Spaulding has put together a very solid two weeks.
28 rushes for 196 yards and 2 TD's against Wartburg...including a 57 yarder
28 rushes for 192 yards and 3 TD's against Simpson...including a 26 yarder

The week before against Central, Spaulding rushed 9 times for 51 yards while his backup, Kyle Acker rushed 18 times for 111 yards.

UD is running about a 50% rush/pass combination most weekends

Now, what is the burger vs brat ratio most weekends at your average tailgate?  Or beer vs pop ratio?  :P

You better hope the Duhawks don't roll out their nationally ranked Futbol team against your Dutch.  They won't sub out when they roll up a big lead and just keep piling it on for 4 quarters against you ;)

That was quite a UD/Knights of Castle Wartburg game, I live in the vicintiy of UD but I knew the intensity was a little higher than usualy because for the 1st time since i"ve lived here I could hear the roar of the crowd. That was pretty cool.  I could also hear long time announcer Rima(sorry can't resist, he's a Loras alumnus) begin the 4th quarter and watched it from then on.  UD has the city's football attention and deservedly so.  None of the high school teams are good and Loras isn't going to steal the spotlight.

At this point, the futbol team might put up a better result against Central.  It's interesting to me to watch Loras this year, I'm being patient to see if there is incremental improvement.  That seems to me the only way to measure a 1st year coach.  It's hightly unlikely we'll win this weekend, but it will be important to see some signs of life.

Duhawk...there are lots of Loras alums that see the light and leave the darkside behind, you could be next  ;) My sister went to Loras and we have made peace since  ;D

Dennis Rima, holy smokes my wife was right.  When she heard the announcer she said that sounds like Dennis Rima, he was her high school basketball coach at Holy Cross Leo!!   :P

Also the former baseball coach at UD...if my memory isn't misremembering ;D

Also, by the sound of his voice...brother or at least very close relation to UNI pbp man Gary Rima.

From the distance of this IIAC and MIAC fans perspective, it looks that there could be a 4 way tie for the  IIAC conference championship.

The contenders (Central, Coe, Dubuque and Wartburg) are all 1-1 with each other, with one of the other contenders yet to play.

If they all beat up on each other and have a 4-way or 3-way tie, what is the criterion to determine the conference champion?  Does the IIAC have a rule to determine the automatic qualifier champion? .....some rule that supersedes a NCAA ruling?  Or does just piling on the points on the "underdog 5" make a difference?

Kind of like the Spartans did about 3 weeks ago????

What I see is about 5 pages of how great UD is spattered with a few moans and groans from the Central faithful.  What has this world come to???  :)

Zweifel playing both ways and not running out of gas is absolutely amazing.  And Central has won many a championship by using the best offensive players over and over and over again.  While I wish Central would mix it up more, any team that doesn't take advantage of their best talent for the time they have them is playing little tykes football where everyone gets the same playing time.  This is college football, IMHO anyone who complains about the percentage of time the best player on the team gets a look at the ball is wishing that player was on their team.

There has quite a discussion about the revival of Spartan Football.  I think we need to remember UD hasn't been the only team with a dry spell.  32 seasons ago the University of Dubuque won the last of three straight IIAC titles.  Since then four IIAC conference members have won or tied for all the titles.  The list includes: Central 19 titles, Wartburg 9 titles, Simpson 4 titles, Coe 3 titles.  So current or former IIAC members Luther, Loras, Buena Vista, Cornell, Upper Iowa, William Penn have been without an IIAC football title for more years than Dubuque.  Yes, the Spartans have come a long way but others have been in the lifeboat with them.

Wartburg did not have a winning record against UD until 1994...Wartburg and Simpson were 2 of the last schools to get a winning record against UD.

If I read the UD program correctly on Saturday, Wartburg has had an overall winning record against Dubuque since 1984.  The Knights began IIAC play somewhere around 1938 when the Clinton campus was closed and things became consolidated in Waverly. It doesn't appear athletics were particularly important until a few years after WWII.  Dubuque won nearly all the games in the early years.  Wartburg started holding its own in the mid-50s and eventually caught up in 1984.  Since then Wartburg has taken its turn at winning the majority of the contests.  Someday the worm will turn and it will once again be the Spartans turn.  Should the Spartans begin winning 80% of the meetings between the two teams they will have an even all-time record at the conclusion of the 2049 season.

A conference always determines its own champion. I don't know what the IIAC tiebreaker rules are offhand but they have them.

WINNER - This year's first posting about tie-breakers on who gets the  automatic invite.   ;)
