If your logic was correct, then the Spartans never should have dropped to 2-8 the following year. All I am saying is Coach B did a great job to get to 6-4 and 7-3.

Willie U

That 2-8 team lost to Central 24-21 and to Wartburg 20-13 in OT...while that wasn't one of Central's better teams, the Kaniggets went to UW-Whitewater in the 3rd round and bit back pretty hard before falling 34-17.  As I recall that was a pretty tough year for the DBQ starting with their trip to Redlands (a game I attended) which I think set them back 3 weeks before they recovered...from what I could see that team just didn't gel, there was talent.  It happens...and some of those kids had to have helped Z ride through until his lot got up to speed.  He sure didn't seem to mind having Colton Hansen remain on board that first year.

I agree Coach B. didn't build the current team but he did show there could be some success at UD...that in and of itself was quite an achievement, and we are looking forward to him building Cornell up.

Just moving to the MWC is going to make Cornell look better in the W column.

I'm surprised there's not more chatter about the upcoming toilet bowl.  Somebody is going to leave Mt. Vernon with a win. I actually have a good feeling it will be the Duhawks.  We'll then catch a reeling 3-3 Wartburg team and surprise them in the Rock Bowl and beat BV on the road for a respectable finish a la the early-oughts Hawkeye teams.  This should build to conference championships for the next few years.  That's the way I'm seeing if folks, anybody with me?

I'd call it a three step turnaround. Brautigam Chalapty(sp?) and Zweifel. Can't deny that the new digs helps out.  UD campus is unrecognizable compared to the old days.  The 2 Z's have certainly taken them to a greater level.  You even get Pat C. On warty vs Dutch day!   :o

You're drinking some of that kool-aid IdahoSoccer has been chugging ;D

It's my belief that positive thinking goes a long ways towards happiness.  Us UD fans are prime examples...we stayed positive during a looooooong dry spell for our Spartans.  It could also serve the Loras faithful well.

Hopefully we will be able to say the same thing someday.....I mean we do have the coach who got UD turned around to begin with and we are getting a new field with renovations to the stadium....Have to stay positive!!

You almost have to look at it though as 2 separate turning points in UD Football.

Coach B certainly did a trememdous job bringing the spartans to 6-4 and 7-3 seasons after decades of poor performances.

Coach Z then took a 2-8 (last place conference team) and took them to 5-5, 4-6, and 7-1 (currently with 2 games to go)

The team Coach Z is putting on the field has maybe 1-3 players from Coach B's tenure so you cannot credit Coach B with the current teams success. They are 2 completely separate eras in Spartan Football.

Ok, I was saving this for Simpson but here goes

A group of Dutch backpackers were sitting around a campfire one dark evening when a stranger asked to join them. Glad to have the company, they agreed. Soon the conversation turned to jokes, and one of the camping group started to tell jokes with Wartburg being the butt of many of them. The stranger who apparently graduated from Wartburg got angrier and angrier at each joke. So he finally had enough and pulled out his razor and began to threaten the Dutch with it. Fortunately for the Dutch the Knight couldn't find an outlet to plug it in.

I'm late to the party....but, better late than never, right? ;)

The Knights were playing Central.  It was near the end of the game and Central was ahead by 4. Someone threw a firecracker and the Dutch thought it was the gun and ran off the field celebrating.

Three plays later the Knights scored and won!!

Pat, I'd love to introduce myself after the game but won't arrive until shortly after the game starts so unfortunately no tailgating this week. Will you be in the pressbox or sideline?

Pat Coleman

Probably a little of both. On the field as the record catch approaches.

What do Knights think Cheerios are?

Donut seeds.
*************************************

I think that it is a shame the way you pick on the Knights. After all it was a Wartburg engineer that invented the toilet seat.

...of course a Central engineer stole the design and cut a hole in the middle.

Why did the Wartburg fan get rid of his freezer?

He got tired of cutting the ice into little squares to fit into the trays.

Why can't Wartburg farmers raise chickens?

They plant the eggs too deep.

What are the vital statistics of the winner of the Miss Wartburg Beauty Contest?

36-24-26.....and the other leg is the same.

Hee hee hee....I have to save some for Simpson week. Go Dutch!!

A visitor to a DM Walmart rolled up to the express (12 items or less) checkout with a cart full of goods.  The checkout gal shook her head in disgust and asks,

" are you from Simpson where they can't read, or Wartburg where they can't count?"

Colten was a fine player as were others. My main point was that when a team was 2-8, it doesn't matter what their record was the previous 2 seasons, it is damn hard to recruit for a 2-8 team.
