The Dubuque Telegraph-Herald has a story sure to warm the hearts of most Wartburg fans...http://www.thonline.com/news/tri-state/article_5f776fe3-2123-5c5b-822e-c58cc6f84382.html?success=1

The East Dubuque mayor is lobbying to bring back the bars and strip clubs that the previous administration closed down to clean up their image.  Apparently the city has lost a lot of tax revenue ;D

UD and Loras hope that will jump visiting fan attendence from a 600 average to a 900 average at their football games.  At $6.00 per ticket x 5 home games that would be an extra $9,000 in ticket revenue per year due to E Dubuque bringing back some adult establishments ;)

Hooray for the new mayor!

If he gets the job done, I will not only attend Loras and U of Dubuque football games when they play Wartburg in Dubuque, I'll probably take in games against Central, Coe, Buena Vista, Simpson, Luther, and a couple non-conference contests.  I might also become a fan of UW Platteville.

The Land of Mint and Honey..

Not sure where that name came from or how it fit but it was fun.

The Mint and Honey had the advantage of being pretty much 1st on Sinsinawa Ave after you crossed the bridge so everybody stopped in there, even NKD!!!  Kelsey Grammer was unfortunate enough to have his picture taken there and the owner used it in advertisements.  Now if you were really desperate you would make your way past Tuxedo's and visit the River Queen at the end of main street....oh that place nasty...at least my group can still embarass a friend of ours by retelling over and over at reunions the time he passed out in the bathroom trough at the River Queen and we had to fish him out of there.  Smelly ride home to say the least.

Ok, any recruiting news?  Coaching changes??  Any surprise news of players not coming back???

Will I still be able to tailgate at the Wartburg parents tailgate next season...will the old timers on this board still be there?  Any new tailgate recipes someone has recently come across??  What will we all do on 09/22 when the ENTIRE conference has a week off...go shopping with our wives...get some long overdue yard work done...take in a D2 or NAIA game in the state???

The only coaching change I know about is Pfantz leaving the Central staff and becoming the Head Coach at Ottumwa HS.

He will be a big loss for the Dutch. A lot of Coe's success can be traced to the players he recruited while he was coaching at Coe.

So ... will UD be the last IIAC to release their 2012 schedule?

GO SPARTANS!

My money is on Wartburg to be last with UD releasing just ahead of the Knights ;D

Dubuque Telegraph-Herald with a UD football story today...http://www.thonline.com/sports/local_sports/article_926e8141-3eaa-5b5d-87ed-d03a1a729193.html?cbst=2

It's a subscription but here are some bits from it... ;)

Zweifel is comfortable with his team's talent in the backfield, where junior-to-be Kyle Acker, who was a solid No. 2 back behind Spaulding last season, is waiting in the wings and 2010 Telegraph Herald Player of the Year Dakota Runde is the new projected No. 2 back. Acker averaged 4.6 yards per carry while running for 432 yards and three scores.

But Zweifel knows UD's wide receiver spot has gaping production holes to fill with the loss of arguably the best receiving tandem in IIAC history.

"You can't graduate Fleming and Zweifel and not have concerns about it," Stan Zweifel said.

Dubuque is set at quarterback where the record-setting Wyatt Hanus (coming off a 3,490-yard, 44-touchdown junior season) returns along with all four other QBs on the 2011 roster. Offensive line is another strong spot, where first-team all-IIAC performer Richard Skaife heads the unit.

"We feel really good about the work we've put in on the offensive line," Zweifel said. "If you've got a good offensive line, you've got a chance to be pretty good."

The Spartan secondary needs a major overhaul, but should return free safety Malcolm Stewart (who is rehabbing from a broken leg) and Dylan Ramsey, a speed merchant limited to two games by injury in 2011 who Zweifel calls "the fastest player on our team." Recruiting and developing a consistent kicker with long range is a priority to lighten the workload of punter Steve Jones.

Zweifel believes he needs to go no further than a 100-mile radius of the tri-states to make Dubuque an even better team in 2012 than its 9-2 2011 breakthrough squad.

"I think we're going to have an outstanding football team next season," Zweifel said. "Winning breeds success. We're excited about the changes we've went through, and so excited about having local kids on our roster."

I wouldn't mind them bringing in some diversity from out of state... ;)

Good deal with Charlie Kohawk with some recruiting news.

Here is what I found from our local high school, Union of La Porte City (3A State Champs)...

http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=ukfootball

http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Union-Knights-Football/254538910044

Cole Hinders LB/TE - Wartburg...over Coe, Sioux Falls, Upper Iowa, Winona St.

Damon Powell DB - Dubuque...spent last year at Iowa Western JC, is on the UD campus now.

Logan Sallee C/DL - Buena Vista...over Dubuque

Jon Porter - considering Upper Iowa, Dubuque, Simpson

Dylan McLaughlin - plans to wrestle at Coe or Wartburg...but maybe the football programs can talk him into playing football.

There could be more to follow...

The future of Kohawk football looks bright. Add another to the long line of skilled Coe quarterbacks.

Charlie, how old do you feel seeing the Atwater boys suit up for the Kohawks after seeing them as kids, throwing the ball around before and after home games throughout the years?

That is my impression as well.  I have heard he was a very good recruiter.  I do not know much about the Central recruiting this year except that they are out there and very busy.  I know more whats going on in Illinois than Iowa.

How do you prefer your crickets?

A - Deep Fried
B - Chocolate Covered
C - Chirping in the back yard in late summer while I knock back a cold one in anticipation of the coming football season
D - All of the above

I finally thought of a football topic that we may want to talk about, or not.  Actually, it has probably been talked to death and I just don't listen to the right radio shows.  With perfect hind sight, I have decided I don't like it when teams let their opponents score at the end of games like New England did, so that they will have more time when they get the ball.  I suppose some Money Ball number cruncher has figured out that the odds of going 80 yards in a little more than a minute are better than the odds of an NFL team not making a field goal of less than 10 yards.  But based on my gut, and if you have ever seen my gut you know that is a lot of evidence, you should never give away anything in a football game.  Of course the 12 men on the field 5 yard penalty wasn't a bad deal for NY when they wanted to improve their odds of stopping a really long play and they knew a lot of time would come off of the clock.  Now that I read what I have written, it doesn't seem as provocative as I thought it would.  Sorry, it's best I got since if there is any IIAC news, I haven't seen it.
