I finally thought of a football topic that we may want to talk about, or not.  Actually, it has probably been talked to death and I just don't listen to the right radio shows.  With perfect hind sight, I have decided I don't like it when teams let their opponents score at the end of games like New England did, so that they will have more time when they get the ball.  I suppose some Money Ball number cruncher has figured out that the odds of going 80 yards in a little more than a minute are better than the odds of an NFL team not making a field goal of less than 10 yards.  But based on my gut, and if you have ever seen my gut you know that is a lot of evidence, you should never give away anything in a football game.  Of course the 12 men on the field 5 yard penalty wasn't a bad deal for NY when they wanted to improve their odds of stopping a really long play and they knew a lot of time would come off of the clock.  Now that I read what I have written, it doesn't seem as provocative as I thought it would.  Sorry, it's best I got since if there is any IIAC news, I haven't seen it.

Maybe it depends on the level of play and on the weather conditions.  Cold weather and a strong wind and maybe I take my chances that the other team misses their FG attempt.  Especially at the D3 level.  If it's the NFL and they are playing in a Dome, then let them score a TD and see if your offense can move down the field in about a minute.

Either way, whether it's right or wrong...it would get tongues wagging on here if it was the correct call or not.  Which would be a good thing.

If my team wins a game with a situation like that at the end you would probably find me telling my wife afterwards that we need to stay a little longer at the tailgate and let me enjoy another beer in celebration.  To which she would reply "we really need to get back and pick up our kids from my parents place...I'm sure they are driving them crazy by now"

If I am the Giants I am trying to score a touchdown and not leaving it to the foot of a kicker.  Yes there is always the chance of a fumble but snap, catch, place and kick are way too many things that need to go right in the highest of pressure situations you can get in football.
Win or lose we still booze!!

Probably, if NE hadn't let them in on 2nd down, the Giants would have tried for a td on 3rd down after they burned another 30 seconds.

I bet we see some kind of rule change regarding too many defenders on the field.  I don't know why the Giants only used 12.  Why take chances?  They should have called the old "rush 3 drop 10" defense.  It sure made a lot of sense to me to give NE 5 yds on their own side of the field on their last drive in exchange for about 40% of the time remaining.  I guess that is why NFL coaches get the big bucks.

There were two dropped passes that would have made a big difference in field postion for the last play.  I would love to have lunch with Giselle Bundchen to discuss that final drive.
Hopefully she will pick up the tab.  I saw in the news recently she is the first Billionaire model. She has always looked to me like the type that would like tall, fat, ugly, married men with children and no money.

Why stop at 13?  Put everybody that's dressed on the field and take the 5 yard penalty.

Yeah, there needs to be some sort of rule change. The loss of time off the clock was killer for the Pats in that situation. I'd argue anytime the defense has 12 men on the field under 2 minutes in the 4th or OT it should be a 15 yd penalty and no time run off the clock (i.e. reset the game clock to the time it read prior to the snap).

As the rules stands now, it was a no brainer for the Giants to have 12 guys out there. It was a no lose. Give up an inconsequential 5 penalty yds and burn a chunk of valuable clock. I don't know if it was intentional, but if it wasn't this time, you can bet there are coaches now thinking it'd be a good strategy in the future.

Not sure if many of you have heard, but Barron Bremner, former Coe and Cornell wrestling coach and AD has passed away.  I never had the chance to meet Barron, but have heard numerous stories about his time spent at both Coe and Cornell.  It's too bad that he won't have the chance to see the inaugural presentation of the Bremner Cup to the all-sports winner between Coe and Cornell.

Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Is the Bremner Cup for All Sports or just football?

Does it matter?  ;D The Rams won't be touching it at any point.

It's all sports though.

I had the pleasure of meeting Barron a few times and he was a class act to say the least. One of the finer people I have ever met. His impact on both Cornell and Coe is everlasting.

We'll see about that.

I talked to Coach Bremner on three occasions.  He played on the one of the Iowa Rose Bowl teams. I told him it would be neat if the Big Ten Network would put together as much of the footage they could find of those games and telecast them in the networks Classic Game series.  He told me he would like to see that because he had never seen any highlights of the game.

The other conversation I remember we had almost identical suits on.  I said I suppose you got that at Bauman's (in Mount Vernon) he said yes and asked if I had ever been in the basement. I had been down there once where several people were sitting around a table solving world problems.  I can picture him down there holding court.

He will be missed.

Haven't really been around on the FB board for awhile, but thought I should come on today to find out if Warthog was in Pella for the Central-WB basketball game today.  At the half they had a drawing for a raffle prize, sorry I can't say what the prize was, I wasn't really paying attention.  It was a raffle to raise funds for a spring break mission trip and the winner was a man from Wartburg who said to donate the prize to charity.  Very classy thing to do, so I thought maybe Warthog had made the trip to Pella.   :)  I don't often give a shout out to WB fans, but sometimes they deserve it.   ;)

On a much more somber note, please keep Central grads Wade and Hilary Van Vark and their family in your thoughts and prayers.  Their 16 year old son died in a car accident Monday night and the funeral was this morning.  I worked with both of his parents when they were students at Central, his grandmothers, great aunt and great uncle also all work at Central.  Blake was a very well liked 4 sport athlete who had the tragic misfortune of being on the road on one of the very few bad nights of this winter.  His SUV hit a 100% ice covered spot and he slid into the lane of an oncoming pickup.  The guy could not have avoided hitting him, but sadly, it was later revealed that the man was drunk at the time.  Horrible tragedy.  The police say the man would not have been able to avoid him even if sober, but I would think it would always haunt you that maybe a quicker reaction could have made the difference between living and dying in the accident.

Klompen: Actually I was in Pella on Saturday.  Mrs. Warthog and I didn't plan it that way, but as the morning and afternoon wore on we found ourselves in front of Jaarsma's Bakery.  We got up in the morning and headed over to the Kalona Furniture Store to look for end tables.  When in that area you must make a stop at the Kalona Cheese factory for cheese curds and the Stringtown Grocery Store for bread mixes, veggie pastas, buckwheat pancake mix, syrups, fruit preserves, pickles etc.  It was such a nice day we headed over to Oskaloosa to try the new Merlot wine at Tassel Ridge Winery.  Then you're only 10 miles from Pella, so of course we headed over to Jaarsma's.  After the bakery we had a late lunch at the Dog House.  We knew the Knights were playing the Dutch. In fact we drove by the fieldhouse and debated stopping by for the men's game since by that time it was about 3:30.  We decided instead to make the 2 1/2 hour drive back home to watch the Muscatine/Burlington district semi-final girls basketball game.  Unfortunately my good karma doesn't count if I just drive by rather than actually attend a game, so as a result it is my fault the Knights came up short.

Klompen

Well, Warthog, Pella is always glad to take the money of a Knight fan, and anybody else!!!   ;)  While your good karma might not have been enough to save the Knights, your class karma must have rubbed off on your fellow fans.  Whoever it was, their generosity is greatly appreciated.

Oh, and if you would have stopped by, you would have seen an outstanding performance by Jordan Sathoff.  The Knights as a team may have been down this year, but he sure wasn't.  I got to the game too late to get a program, but I sure hope he was a senior.  So sorry to see him graduate.   :'( :'( :'(  Oh wait, I'm thinking like a Knight.   ;)
