Former IIAC schools William Penn and Upper Iowa have recently completed or are in the process of building/renovating football facilities at their schools.

Buena Vista completed renovations on their field last year with artificial turf, a new track, added concessions and new visitor seating.

Simpson just put in new artificial turf, new concessions, fencing and next will begin work on the home seating and press box.

Coe recently installed turf and this year added badly needed visitor side seating to their football facility.

Dubuque, Loras, Wartburg completed upgrades on their football facilities within the pat 5-6 years.

Do Central and Luther have any plans for upgrades to their facilities?  Just curious, as we don't have a whole lot else to talk about this time of year ;)

Actually, there is the story out now where Alabama sent a recruit 105 letters that all came to his mail box the same day.  Do any IIAC schools do silly things like that?  Anybody have any strange recruiting stories they would like to share?

Not from DIII but from BCS: When the kid intered at Iowa State football two years ago his daily job was to hand address envelopes for coaches to send to recruits. This was during a period when the only contact a school could have with a recruit was by hand-written notes only, no personal visits or phone calls. the regulations are silly. The notes had to be hand-written. They had to be of a certain size. There could only be color used on one side; the other had to be blank or a black and white picture. They sent these notes out five days a week to each recruit with the note being written by a different coach each day.

Since my son was with the football department I could not leagally under NCAA rules talk to any potential recruit unless I knew him personally before he was in 9th grade. That was kind of difficult living in a small town where most of the football team worked in various jobs around the town or were friends of my daughter who I hadn't met until they were in high school.

Just a couple of items to show how DIII recruiting is a lot more sane. You just have to give them money to go to Wartburg. ;)

IIAC sighting of the day.

Luther College fridge magnet in a house in Clutier, IA this morning.

Not football, I think it had admissions ph#'s on it or something like that.

To think a Norseman living in the middle of Czech/Bohemian/German country.  He must be the village outcast!!!

To quote a comedianne of Norwegian heritage from Minnesota who's name I can't remember:
"How can you admire a people who sailed across an ocean risking death, then traveled halfway across a continent only to settle in a place just as miserable as the one they left."
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

Not football, but a nice story from the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier about 3 Wartburg wrestlers from the east coast and their journey that led them to Waverly.

I think it had to do with their campus visit.  They crossed the river at Dubuque and drove by UD.  After that they couldn't get the stench out of their car until they arrived in Waverly.  It was then they decided Wartburg was the place for them.

They came to Cedar Rapids and found it flooded and smelly.  They then travelled up to Waverly and it was that warm fuzzy feeling they got from smelling the Nestle plant in Waverly...that and the "boats and ho's" party on the Cedar River they were taken to while in Waverly...They never made it to Dubuque or we would have been reading a story about 3 Spartan wrestlers  ;)

That article mentions a few times they were impressed with the facilities and the winning tradition.  Hopefully with the facilities Dubuque has put in over the past decade they can continue their improvement with their wrestling program.  Their football, both basketball teams, baseball, softball, mens golf have certainly stepped up recently!!!

I have talked to a number of parents recently that have kids in college or about to graduate from high school while I am on my inspections.  All of them have said the D3 and NAIA schools in Iowa are able to come within about 2K of what the state schools offer them.  If they are interested in continuing with sports that 2k difference seems ok with them to have their kids attend IIAC schools.  Now it comes down to "do they have my major" "what kind of facilities do they have" "will I get playing time and do they win at all"

I heard this on the radio this morning so I don't have a link.

New NCAA football rules for next season...

Kickoffs moved from the 30 up to the 35.

Players on the kickoff team will be 5 yards from the 35 instead of 10 yards back.

Touchbacks on kickoffs will now go to the 25 yd line.

If a player has a helmut come off during a play he has to sit out the next play...like it was an injury.

If a player has a helmut come off during the play is cannot keep playing during that play, he has to stop.

I think doolittle is on to something here.  Definately facility upgrades at UD and those wrestling coaches are worth the price of admission just to watch the excitement they generate in their corner when a Spartan is on the mat.  From my family's perspective, the best thing about UD in 2012 is that they are no longer the "other" college in Dubuque.  They are "the" college in Dubuque which leaves Loras and Clark figuring out which institutions are 2nd and 3rd.

Having a player stop when the helmet comes off will be hard to control.  It seems to me most head gear comes off during the contact while the play is happening.  Stopping at that point could make a player more vulnerable and cause more damage than going ahead with the play.

The same thought occurred to me.  Maybe they just mean that if the ballcarrier (assuming that is who lost the helmet) eludes the tackler, they cannot further advance the ball?
