Does anyone know anything about this?  Aren't semi-pro teams for guys out of school who want to keep playing just for fun?  No one expects to make any money off of it do they?

"The Pella Knights are holding open tryouts this weekend. The semi-professional football team moved to Pella this year, and will play on Saturday nights. Pella Knights Head Coach Steve Miller tells KNIA/KRLS News that they invite everyone interested to come try out. The open tryouts are Sunday at the PAC Center on the William Penn Campus in Oskaloosa from 5:00 to 9:00. Participants must pay a $20 registration fee, and be 18 or older."

FR: This is part of an article in the Muscatine Journal discussing the 2013 entry into the league -

"We used to coach with the Quad City Stallions and learned this is a nice place to possibly get some people that love to play football," Bark said. "It's (for players) 18 years and up, but not high school (players). The nice thing about this is no one gets paid to play, so if there was someone who just graduated high school that wanted to play minor league type of football, they won't lose their eligibility."

Hey FBD, I talked to Coach Beck today and it sounds like they are going to put together a mailing to parents of players that have graduated for a special tailgate at the first home game.

I mentioned this to him at the end of last season as a way to kick off a new season and we could show new parents how it is done, should be a good time.  8-)

I hope they go back to the beginning of this century.  Wow, that really makes it sound like a long time ago.

They're dancing in the streets in Waverly tonight.

Wartburg picked up two more NCAA team national championships today.  The women's indoor track & field won their third title in four years.  The wrestlers were national champions for the seventh time in ten years.

All and all it wasn't a bad day for Knight fans.

Congrats to Wartburg, that was quite a day for you guys yesterday.

Work at Upper Iowa is chugging along on their new football stadium...or renovation.

The 600 or so fans that show up for their games will really get to spread out now ;D

Had to give you positive karma on that one.  As Kelso would say on That 70's Show, "Good burn!"

From USA Today:

The NCAA Has announced that a record number of fans – 47.7 million – attended college football games this past season. But the view from the very top is a little less sunny.

Regular-season attendance fell in eight of the nation's 11 major-college conferences, including the bell cow Southeastern and Big Ten. The bowls hit a 33-year low.

Altogether, the average crowd in the NCAA's top-tier bowl subdivision was the smallest since 2005.

The struggling economy may have taken some of that bite. But while major-college averages were dipping, two lower divisions registered modest increases in attendance in 2011.

I wonder how IIAC schools did this past season.  Maybe doolittledog (that's Spartan blue) ... our resident statistician can tell us.  I'll be UD attendance was up.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Well, I did find this...http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/public/NCAA/Resources/Stats/Football/Attendance/index.html

Wartburg averaged 4,500 by doing this...

09/10 - Gustavus Adolphus - 3,500
09/19 - Buena Vista - 3,000
09/24 - Coe - 5,000
10/15 - Simpson - 7,500
10/29 - Central - 3,500

I have my doubts that even factoring in the BS quotiant that normally gets applied to D3 football attendance reporting that even those numbers are a bit beyond reasonable BS...but oh well.

Dubuque did...

09/10 - Anderson - 1,900
09/17 - Loras - 3,860
09/24 - Central - 2,681
10/08 - Wartburg - 4,218
10/29 - Luther - 1,988

for a 2,929 average.  In 2010 Dubuque averaged 1,573.

So, uh, Spartan fans did their part in raising the 2011 average from 2010 ;)

NKD-
Definetly up for more tailgating. I don't even need much of a reason.

Got to see a few of the players at the Goat Saturday night while celebrating the daughter's 21st b-day. Even had an old-fashioned melee to add to the evening's entertainment. :o

Conrats to the Knights national champs. The women tracksters are starting to take after the wrestlibg team for dominating the sport. As for the wrestlers, the had the trophy locked up with two mathches to go in the semis. Congtas to Coe for the runner up position.
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

Coe did well, but I believe they were 3rd not 2nd.  Still having the conference go 1 - 3 is great.

I wish I had known.  The Warthog clan was together on Saturday.  When it came time for dinner we decided on Beck's instead of The Goat.  With son #1 & his family in Cedar Falls and son #2 & his family in Waverly the meal location is often determined by which baby Warthog is the most tired and needs to be closest to his own bed.
