It appears the picture at the bottom of my posts was taken from the 2nd floor of Cinton Hall which basically runs the length of the field at Walston Hoover at Wartburg.  On game day there are usually students watching from the dorms while they enjoy the beverages of choice and exchange occasional insults with fans of the opposition.

I was watching ESPN last night and they had a short special on Aaron Rodgers. I was not aware of the specifics of his earlier athletic career.

It seemed he has always had to prove himself from high school on and always played with a chip on his shoulder. No one wanted him because his height, weight, 40 time, bench press, etc weren't "D-1" material. So, he went to a junior college and proved himself there, yet, none of the big D-1's wanted him. He was told he would have to play D3 football by some. The coach from Cal saw him on tape and knew he was something special and ignored what everyone else said about him not being fast enough, not benching enough, or his height/weight and offered him a scholarship. Then, of course, most know he was passed on in the draft when some thought he should have been #1 instead of Alex Smith.

I have to admit, I have always loved Brett Farve and it took me a while to warm to Aaron Rodgers but the more I learn about his character, the more I admire him.

In fact, he reminds me a lot of Michael Zweifel. I am saying that MZ will end up as one of the best WR's to play in the NFL or anything like Rodgers is at QB. But, they share many similarities and intangibles and I would love nothing more then to some day watch Aaron Rodgers throw a pass to him. He's not the fastest, tallest, or biggest but he probably is one of the smartest and I guarantee he will work harder then anyone in camp and he certainly has an incredible skill set.

If not the Packers, I hope someone realizes the potential that is there as I believe he could be a very viable NFL possession WR.

This is a Red Letter day.  I agree with everything Willie U wrote.

This doesn't have anything to do with football ... but UD should be embarrassed by the camera set-up for covering the IIAC Track and Field Championships.  Viewers miss the final turn and first part of the home stretch.

DBQ1965

Just a blurb from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel "Packer's Blog" (I hate to think I am reading stuff about the Packers). This is an observation from the recent Rookies Orientation Camp.

3. Who knows if he'll even has a shot in Green Bay with all of the receivers on the roster, but you can see why Michael Zweifel caught 140 passes last season at the University of Dubuque. He doesn't fight the ball. Zweifel is a natural pass-catcher.

I hope the coaching staff sees it the same way as the sports writer.

If the Big 12 is willing to take in a renegade program like Florida State, perhaps it is time to bring back Wm Penn to the IIAC.

Hey all,

Trying to get caught up after a very extended absence.  A couple quick thoughts:

- The quicker the WIAC nobs get out of here, the better.  Let's not let that happen again.

- Best of luck to Michael Z, regardless of whether it's with the Packers or another NFL team. He's without a doubt the best D3 receiver I've ever seen play.

- About time those boys up north decided to start running with the big dogs as far as the All-Sports Trophy is concerned.

- If there ever was such a thing as an Amish running back, I'd bet he went to Central.  The culture there would closely match the one he came from.

- For those of you that don't follow me on Twitter, I have some good news.  I've lost just shy of 40 pounds since the Super Bowl, with a goal of dropping another 85 in the next year.

Spurrier

disappointed that there will be no world tour stops in chicago, dubuque, or manchester this summer.  ms spurrier, and i will be spending a week in tennessee celebrating our 25th wedding aniversary on the tennessee river near chattanooga and then traveling to cincinnati to spend time with spurrier jr.  last time around for #13 of the bearcats.  he will be a red-shirt senior this fall after finishing his degree this summer. it's been an awesome ride; hate to see it end.  empty nest syndrome kicking in this spring as lil' miss spurrier graduated high school in january and spent the spring in denver with my mom working. . .she will be attending west florida in the fall. . .tried to convince her to play soccer for the spartans, but she is ready to become a civilian after earning 10 varsity letters at osceola high. . .hope to make the iowa loop of the world tour in '13. . .go spartans

Sorry you won't be in Iowa this summer.  We'll miss you, but perhaps you could do us a favor.  Call a couple bars in Manchester and Dubuque, give them your VISA card #, and let them know some of your D3 message board pals will stop by to have drinks in your honor and on your tab.

Congrats spurrier.  It doesn't seem like it was that long ago you were telling us on here that spurrier jr was heading off to Cincy...now he is going into his senior year!  Maybe your empty nest will be a little easier to handle with miss spurrier sticking a little closer to home.

I'm also tempted to see if putting beer orders on your tab in Manchester will work as we head towards Dubuque football games from our Waterloo area base of operations next fall...I'm sure warthog will have already made the attempt ;D

A recent interview with the IIAC commish sounds like the conference will be holding steady for the time being.  They wouldn't take Iowa Wesleyan last year...who knows if they would take Billie Penn or even Upper Iowa back.  I wonder if either of those schools would even entertain the offer.  Both schools have some pretty nice football facilities now.

If only Grinnell had joined the IIAC a few years back instead of balking at the idea they would have to add wrestling to do so.  I don't think we would have seen Cornell leave for the MWC if they had joined.
