I am excited to see if I'll Have Another can win the Belmont tomorrow.  I always thought that we would see another triple crown winner before Dubuque won an IIAC football championship but I was wrong about that.  Every thirty years seems about frequent enough for either.  It keeps them special.  I'll have a little something on Dullahan even though I think the guy who runs the syndicate that owns him lives in Indianola which makes me question his judgement.

I just heard on the radio that I'll have Another is injured and will not be running tomorrow in the Belmont...so yet again, no Triple Crown winner.

With the last triple crown winner being crowned in the summer of 1978...Dubuque has won 4 IIAC football championships since the last Triple Crown winner ;D  But yeah, judging by the Spartans 1990-2005 showings, I can see how most people would have expected to see another Triple Crown winner first.  Especially since there has been 11 horses win the 1st two races, only to come up short of victory in the Belmont.

I have wondered, with all the down seasons Spartan fans have had to endure, if we enjoyed/appreciated our IIAC football title last season a bit more than fans that get 4-8 titles EVERY decade and a 5-5 season is considered a catastrophy?  With that said, I will be more than happy to witness Dubuque put up another 56 points on Central this year and celebrate in November with another IIAC championship trophy...I won't expect it...but would be happy to take it all in again ;D

Being a fan of a team which has won championships on a regular basis and which has also experienced long dry spells, I can tell you that the championship enjoyment/appreciation is about the same.  It is like enjoying barbequed ribs.  You might prefer Cookie's BBQ sauce over Famous Dave's BBQ sauce, but once you sit down to a full slab you don't care because both are better than a boiled hotdog the guy next to you is eating..

mmm...ribs (said with my Homer Simpson voice)

And if my math is correct...it is often wrong...82 days until IIAC football resumes!!!

I think I heard Aug 11th for UD football to report to campus...not sure when practice actually starts.  When do other IIAC schools start summer practice???

Au contraire!  In my book a good, all meat weiner in its natural casing with no-bean chili, some mildly spicy mustard, diced onions and light vinegar pickle relish can hold its own with bbq ribs any day.

Reminds me of an old saying: You can dress up a pig and take it to a dance; but in the end you're still dancing with a pig.

No association implied, but I'm looking forward to your replies. ::)

My wife and I will be in the Dubuque area for a few days next week.  Any suggestions on things to do and places to eat.

If you head downtown...below the bluff, you will get away from the chains and find individual stores and restaurants.  Lots of shops on Bluff St, and any number of places to eat depending on your mood between Dodge St and about 20th St.  The Star restaurant in the old Dubuque Star Brewery is nice.

IIAC football sighting of the day...

I was in the heart of Grundy County this morning.  An area heavy with german presbyterian UD alums.  I pulled up to a white house with blue doors and trim and thought I might be at a house of a Spartan fan.  Then the homeowner met me at the front door wearing a "Luther Football" t-shirt.  Turns out her brother played football at Luther and graduated 4 years ago.

Cookie's and Famous Dave's  :o...you, my friend, need to come down to KC and experience some real BBQ  ;)

Hazzben:  I'm not going to argue on that point.  For clarity I thought I should use the names of a couple off the shelf brands. You are right KC is the place to be for BBQ.  My BBQ favorite has to be beef brisket.  I've found some places in KC that know how to do it right.

And of course you could always take a tour of the two D3 schools in Dubuque...University of Dubuque and Loras College ;)

Ron Boerger

Four-part story from the Waterloo Daily Courier on small college sports features the IIAC and specifically Wartburg and Luther.  Not a football-specific story but figured this board would be the best place to mention it.

Up to one-third of area Division III students are athletes
Recruiting begins with a vision
People are still the foundation

Time and wife permitting I thought I might check out Dubuque's campus and stop in to say hi to Coach Z if he's around.
