I have wondered, with all the down seasons Spartan fans have had to endure, if we enjoyed/appreciated our IIAC football title last season a bit more than fans that get 4-8 titles EVERY decade and a 5-5 season is considered a catastrophy?  With that said, I will be more than happy to witness Dubuque put up another 56 points on Central this year and celebrate in November with another IIAC championship trophy...I won't expect it...but would be happy to take it all in again ;D

Being a fan of a team which has won championships on a regular basis and which has also experienced long dry spells, I can tell you that the championship enjoyment/appreciation is about the same.  It is like enjoying barbequed ribs.  You might prefer Cookie's BBQ sauce over Famous Dave's BBQ sauce, but once you sit down to a full slab you don't care because both are better than a boiled hotdog the guy next to you is eating..

Cookie's and Famous Dave's  :o...you, my friend, need to come down to KC and experience some real BBQ  ;)

Hazzben:  I'm not going to argue on that point.  For clarity I thought I should use the names of a couple off the shelf brands. You are right KC is the place to be for BBQ.  My BBQ favorite has to be beef brisket.  I've found some places in KC that know how to do it right.

No judgment here. Before I moved to KC I thought going to Famous Dave's was a treat. Mine eyes have since been opened.

I'm a sucker for pork burnt ends or short ribs. And a good juicy brisket with the right sauce is a mighty fine thing indeed. Growing up in Iowa, the pork capitol of the world, I'm surprised BBQ isn't a bigger deal there. If there's anybody who would know what to do with a pig, it'd be Iowa. But then there's always the classic Iowa Chops, can't go wrong their either!

I would say that the best thing to do with pork is put it in Pella Bologna, except that I don't really know what is in those tube steaks.

I'm sure you Dubuque fans will appreciate the press on Colton Hansen. It would be nice if they actually competed for a playoff spot next year.

I was at the Titans game saturday night and he did look good.  Would have never guessed he played for UD.  ;)

I'm glad to see that the Titans pulled it together. I had the misfortune of watching their first game on tv and it was tough. The quality of play by both teams was somewhere between Pop Warner and the Twit Olympics.Granted, there hadn't been a lot of practice, but it was still hard to watch.I hope Hansen has a successful second year with them.

All this time off will give you plenty of time to come up with excuses for why your Knights will lose to my Spartans later this fall.

Back from my trip to Dubuque and Galena.  We had a chance to visit the UD campus and I have to say I was very impressed.  Your new fitness center matches anything our schools have to offer and you've got a really nice stadium and playing surface.  I can easily understand why Coach Z's felt it was a place he would be able to recruit and be successful.  I did stop by Coach Z's office but unfortunately he was out of town.

We both though Dubuque was a really nice place.

Thanks for the kind words bwh. UD is fortunate to have some great leadership with a vision and a motivated Board of Trustees and alumni base to see through the improvements on campus over the past 15 years or so.  The city of Dubuque and the surrounding area are also a great place for the young and old alike.

I can remember (many moons ago) visiting the UW-Platteville campus with the UD tennis team and thinking we would never be able to come close to the types of facilities the UW system schools were able to provide.  UD is now at least close to being in the same ball park facilities wise.  Something I never thought I would see in my lifetime.

Here is a question for the board.

Has football popularity in the IIAC increased over the past 20 years?  When I was in school in the late 80's - early 90's Central was the only school I can remember bringing a significant away crowd.  They probably had 1/3 of the crowd and probably brought about 600 fans to a game in Dubuque when I was in school.  I can't remember any other school bringing those numbers at that time.  Over the past few years it looks like Luther, Wartburg, Coe, Central, and Simpson all brought about 500-600 to the game at UD.  Loras had to have had 900 there last year (I know, short trip) BVU, with their long trip and cold November weather still brought a couple hundred.  Only Cornell struggled.  Are schools doing a better job of encouraging their fans to go to all the games?  More 4-lane roads make driving easier??  What do you think???

Another question.  Is the Central fan base basically the family of current players?  Looking at their home attendence last season Central reported 700 for Augustana, 1000 for Luther, 3500 for Coe (homecoming) 1000 for BVU, 1000 for Cornell.  Central seems to bring 500-700 with them to away games and about the same crowd when you factor in away support for their home games.  What gives???

Last month a zebra and a parrott bellied up to the bar at The Dog House, across the street from UD.  Today Brett Favre was at the Dog House in support of the owner, who is battling cancer. 20-25 years ago when I was filling up my belly at the Dog House I had no idea it would go on to such stardom ;)
